Which first-time Olympic athletes from your country are expected to make a mark at the Rio Games?

The U.S, team is strong in a wide variety of events, and many of the top performers are newbies to the Olympic scene, and some are new to international competition altogether. Below is a list of fifteen newbies I think have the potential to medal, and maybe even break a few records.Jarrion Lawson - After one of the single most impressive individual performances at the NCAA Championships - where he won the 100, 200, and long jump - Lawson continued his stellar season by qualifying for the Olympics with a personal best 28-foot jump at the U.S. Trials. The secret to his amazing hops is runway speed: with 10-flat speed in the 100 meters, he’s reminiscent of other blazing fast sprinter/jumpers like Dwight Phillips and Carl Lewis.Brianna Rollins - After a stellar collegiate career, she debuted on the international scene in 2013 by winning her first world title in the 100m hurdles at the 2013 World Championships in Rome. She set an American record of 12.26 at the USA Championships in that same season. Her record was broken by the Kendra Harrison of the U.S., who set a world record of 12.20 in London on July 22nd. Kendra is the only hurdler running faster than Brianna this season. Unfortunately, Kendra didn’t qualify for the Olympics after finishing 6th place in the U.S. trials. This leaves Brianna as the heavy favorite to win gold.Sandi Morris - At a meet at Rice University in Houston, Texas, Sandi cleared 4.93 meters in the pole vault, or 16 feet 2 inches. This is an American outdoor record and the top mark in the world this season. The pole vault will be stiff competition even without the Russians, but Sandi will be a medal contender.Vashti Cunningham - At just 18 years old, Vashti is truly one of the most talented and entertaining athletes on the Olympic team. The daughter of the great NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham, niece of NFL running back Sam Cunningham, and brother of reigning NCAA high jump champion Randall Cunningham Jr., she is every bit as talented as the rest of the family. She has jumped 6’ 5” in the outdoor season, tying her for the No. 5 mark of the season.Ameer Webb - While most of the attention surrounding the sprinters has been placed on veterans like Justin Gatlin, Usain Bolt, LaShawn Merritt and others, Ameer Webb has quietly put together an impressive season of races in the 200m. He has been posting sub 20-second times since April and is currently the No. 3 performer in the world this season.Simone Biles - Since 2013, this girl has been on a tear. She has repeatedly proven that she is the best all-around gymnast in the world. She won the all-around at the World Championships three years in a row. She has also won another 9 medals at worlds, 6 of which were gold. Even among veterans like Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas, Simone appears to be the anchor of this team.Dalilah Muhammad - After some inconsistency since the 2013 season when she earned a silver medal at the World Championships in the 400m hurdles, Dalilah looks like she is back in prime form this season. Her time of 52.88, which she ran en route to winning the U.S. Trials in Eugene, Oregon, puts her a full second ahead of the next best Olympic-qualifying athlete.Morgan Craft - The U.S. Olympic shooting team doesn’t see much turnover because the best athletes have a lot of staying power, so it’s big news when a new talent emerges. Morgan Craft is a prime example of this. Craft is the top-ranked skeet shooter in the world and took gold at the 20 15 World Championships in Italy.Kevin Cordes - He picked up four medals (one gold, two silver and one bronze) at last year’s World Aquatics Championships in Kazan. Solid in the long course breaststroke from 50 to 200 meters, Cordes will focus on the 100m breaststroke in RIo. He will likely also be on one of the medley relay teams.Caaleb Dressel - At age 19 and just a few months removed from finishing up an impressive sophomore season at University of Florida, Dressel finished second at the 100m free at the U.S. Olympic trials to qualify for his first Olympics. He might also appear on one of the relays.Kelsey Robinson - The US National Volleyball Team is consistently ranked among the best in the world and is always a medal contender at the Olympics. Outside Hitter Kelsey Robinson has been a member of both of the great national teams since 2014. Two years ago she was on the gold medal-winning World Championship team, and last year she was on the FIVB Grand Prix team that won gold in Omaha and silver in Bangkok. Her season team alliance is with Imoco Volley in Italy.Kyle Snyder - This heavyweight has been a winner on every level. He went undefeated in high school and went on to win a World Junior Championship in 2013. In 2015 he took gold at the Pan Am Games in Toronto and the World Championships in Las Vegas. Despite only being 20 years-old, he has been training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs since he was 17, so he is a seasoned wrestler.Katie Zaferes - Don’t let the fact that she was the third and final American triathlete chosen for the Olympics fool you. She is the top-ranked triathlete in the country and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the world. She also won her first World Triathlon Series event just a few weeks back in Hamburg, Germany. So while she doesn’t have experience, she has talent and momentum in her favor.
