What can we expect from computational photography in the future?

Yes. Undeniably.I don’t think it’s the only future, but I think it’s already the present of photography, simply because, rounded to the nearest billion or so, every person on the planet shoots their photos with a smartphone. And a smartphone isn’t a camera — it’s an increasingly powerful pocket computer that, among its many peripheral devices, usually has two or more $10-$30 camera modules. It also helps that two of the world’s largest software companies, Google and Apple, are very interested in making smartphones.But this isn’t new, or specific to phones. My old Canon 6D had more software-enhanced modes in 2013 than most smartphones. They were just a bit limited. But it could shoot multiple exposures and add them up to produce a cleaner image in very low light — light so low, Google’s brand new Night Shot wouldn’t have a chance. But they’re both using similar ideas, though Google’s put it in a phone, where’s it needed far more than a full frame DSLR. And they made it work handheld, while the Canon needed a tripod. And Google shoots more shots, and dynamically adapts them to the shot at hand. The 6D was much simpler: four stacked shots.So I mentioned this as a “stack”, which is how most serious photographers refer to a set of photos of exactly the same thing done for some purpose. In this case, the effect is exposure stacking — we’re building up a good exposure from multiple lower exposures, to produce a cleaner end result. But once you get into multiple exposures, your camera can “stack”just about anything.The 6D also has an HDR mode. HDR means High Dynamic Range, which simply means a greater range of light to dark than a normal shot could take. The photo here, actually shot and manually edited with one of my Olympus cameras, illustrates this kind of thing. You can think of it as Dynamic Range Stacking. Every smartphone that’s delivering a competive photo today is using dynamic range stacking, because the range of a tiny smartphone sensor is very limited. And actually, so is your monitor, the JPEG I uploaded here, and whatever format Quora stores. This incorporates another computational technique: dynamic range compression. You can apply an algorithm that makes an image with an undisplayable light-to-dark range into something that preserves the character of that, but allows it to be stored as a JPEG and displayed on a computer. Some photographers intentionally push these hard and make unearthly images. And sometimes, your smartphone gets overagressive and also produces unearthly images.Here’s another example of stacking, in this case it’s time-stacking. I haven’t seen a camera do this for me yet, but wait a week. The Chesapeake Bay was a bit rough here, and I wanted a placid look. So I shot about 20 photos of the same thing, brought them into Photoshop, and averaged. On the average, the water is placid!And backing off a bit, the Canon 6D, the Olympus, these are digital camera. So no surprise, their primary function is as a camera, of course, not a computer. But anything that says “digital” in the manual you haven’t read has computers inside, for menus, controls, photo capture, image processing, etc. So in the smallest sense, like even when producing a clean JPEG image, a digital camera is doing computational photography. Just light enough that no one’s thinking of it that way.In 2015 I bought the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II, a Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera. And over time, I used that more than the Canon. Why? Well, primarily, in the way I used cameras, I was getting as-good or better results.Some of that was already “computational”, if not entirely the modern connotation of computational photography as doing image processing on one or more images. But computer-supervised and augmented photography, doing things that seemed impossible a few years back on that kind of camera.Take image stabilization, the ability of a camera or lens to adjust for the micromotion of your hands during an exposure. This camera has an in-body-image-stabilization system that moves the sensor counter to camera motion. So like a phone, it’s got very sensitive motion detectors, and it’s also got a processor capable of factoring in output from those sensors, the lens focal length, and calculating just how much to micro-move the sensor to compensate.So the Olympus specs suggest you can hand-hold for about 5EVs (exposure values). I shot this, handheld, at 3.2 seconds. Not too bad… I’m a believer.Using that same moving sensor, on a tripod, the OM-D E-M5 mark II, which is a 16 megapixel camera, can take a multi-exposure shot, 64 megapixels worth and maybe about the equivalent of a 40 megapixel camera, give or take. Today, Google is using a similar kind of thing, but using your hands shaking in their favor, as a source of entropy, to take multiple shots and boost effective resolution to enable a digital zoom that’s not simply a crop. Reports say their 2x zoom is more like 1.5x, but it probably depends on how good you get with it. And maybe in a few months, a software update makes it worthy of 2x quality. You can think of these modes as resolution stacking.Yet another function on the Olympus is focus bracketing and, on some models, focus stacking. I actually shot this one manually, but you can get the idea: this is a macro shot, and the depth of field of this lens (60mm f/2.8 macro) is very shallow. But if I adjust focus in a “bracket” across several shots and merge based on clarity, I get a clean image of whatever’s in-focus on all images. And here’s another cool thing about the fact your camera is a digital device: when I bought the OM-D E-M5 Mark II, there was no automated focus stacking mode. They added it in a software update about a year later.And of course, you can get that in a smartphone. Google Pixel users have seen new features added in the Google Camera app on a regular basis. Not all new features are pure software, so those will not be upgrades. Google and Apple have special processors that assist in artificial intelligence and/or image processing, and these get upgraded, so the old phones may not run the new software. It depends on the improvements. And of course, being a computer, your phone can load other camera applications that offer different kinds of computational photography.The Olympus cameras also have a kind of time stacking mode of their own, a bit different than what I showed above. It’s called Live Bulb/Live Time. Basically, you start a photo and watch, on the back panel or viewfinder, as the camera updates the exposure on a fast interval. The exposure continues until you stop it. The key is, rather than having to guess at exposure — always a tricky thing for long exposure night photography — you can just build up the exposure until it’s good.(Olympus photo by Alex McClure)And yet another is called Live Composite, which is another kind of light stacking. You set an exposure for a low light scene, and the camera takes a shot. And then another, and another, until you stop. But these are merged based on recording light that’s different, shot to shot. So you can do light-painting in a room that’s not dark, with no concern for overexposure based on the ambient light.And no, I’m not trying to sell you an Olympus camera, or a Google smartphone. I’m pointing out that computational photography is already here. It has been used for practical things in dedicated cameras for quite some years, mostly with the intent of helping the photographer get the shot. The phone added a different dimension, because it’s also the computer, and while serious photographers will edit their photos — analogous to the creative process of printing in the days of film, an essential part of the process — the smartphone user probably won’t. So those “done by hand” things I showed here will be automatically done, and most likely, layered on each other, to deliver a photo that, while not technically as good as a photo shot and edited by a knowledgable pro, is better than a novice got with a similar camera two years ago. Maybe better than that same novice with a professional camera and no idea how to shoot or edit as I’ve illustrated here. Thanks Om KumarThe answer to this question is the beauty of the AIIMS entrance test.Biology is average and you would be able to solve the questions if you have gone through NCERT well enough.Chemistry will make you feel that may be you needed to work harder. You will find some great concepts in the questions and options would be more than confusing.But the real fun part is Physics. However good you are at physics you would think that you lack something . Not all the questions are from new concepts but the calculation and application part is just awesome.One of my friends scored 175 out of 180 in NEET (He was scoring 180 from ALLEN'S answer keys) but even he wasn't sure if he performed well in the AIIMS Physics.These points in no way mean that the questions are very difficult or unsolvable but if you are too much into NEET, your habit of solving all the questions right may be disturbed.If you like Physics and Chemistry you would love to sit in the AIIMS exam. But If you are a BIO freak and from the general category this may not be the best exam you attempt.You need to be good at physics or at least somewhat above average to get in to any of the AIIMS.At last it's your self determination that helps you clear the exam so be prepared to work hard.These are my opinion and this may vary from person to person.RegardsSaurabh
