I’m not known to be politically correct, often I say things that are taken the wrong way…Despite this I feel the worst thing I’ve heard from OTHER medical professionals is universally about the patient coming to the doctor for stupid reasons. “I cannot believe he came in for that!”As a physician in the only national social medicine system in the United States, Military Medicine, I have patients I am assigned to who never pay to see me. As they are also usually very young and are not allowed to call in to work sick (nor are they allowed to skip physical training) without medical permission; I feel it is my absolute responsibility to see everyone of my patients for every single thing they are questioning. Don’t get me wrong, if I feel it’s stupid or silly to come to medical, I will tell them and laugh; often with the patient and my Corpsman. (Medic for you non medical or Army types.)I have talked to my patients about how the numbness in their feet, when running, is normal. I have talked them through a very mild sniffle. I have even had to talk to my patients about mattress purchases and sex toys…needless to say, my peers feel this is beneath them and often kick Marines and Sailors out of the clinic. Sad! Not everyone has the benefit of years of college, medical school, and graduate medical education. My peers can be real a$$ho!!$.

This may be a fact little known in the Quora community.In China, C-section requires the permission of family members before a woman can undergo the operation.In other words, the woman does not have the power to decide on her own in terms of childbirth, even though she is the one to bear the excruciating pain and the possible complications.In 2017, a 26-year-old pregnant woman chose to take her life by jumping from the 5th floor of the hospital, after her family refused permission for a C-section. [1][1][1][1]The 26-year-old Rongrong Ma was 42 weeks pregnant when she was pushed into the maternity ward at a local hospital. An ultrasound indicated that the fetus's head was too large for a natural birth, so the doctors strongly recommended a C-section operation.However, her family refused to give consent.Ma pled with her family at least three times, even falling on her knees, to allow her to have a C-section so that her excruciating labor pain could be somewhat alleviated. Her family firmly denied her request again and again, until the point where the doctors decided that she was far into labor to safely start a C-section operation.Two hours later, when the medical staff were busy tending to other pregnant women in the ward, Ma slipped into an empty ward on the fifth floor and jumped from the window. Both she and the unborn child were killed.Her family denied her request for C-section for unspecified reasons. Some say that they refused to give consent to the operation because a natural birth would be beneficial to the baby and make the second pregnancy easier, while some say that the family was concerned about the cost of the operation.Ma and her husband came from one of the most poverty-stricken regions in China. Thus, ideas linked to childbirth are much less progressive.After this news hit the national headline, Ma's family attempted to tell a different version of the story in which they granted Ma's request for a C-section, but the hospital had no record of their permission.I was born by C-section. I knew first-hand that in less progressive times people encourage natural birth at all cost. They want their baby to be absolutely perfect, since one-child policy limits the number of children per household.For the past two decades, I've heard numerous people saying that babies born by C-section tend to be less intelligent because “their head wasn't pressured in the birth canal”. Assigned male at birth, I realized that I had had enough at one point during medical school and decided to keep my hair long.Once it reached a length that I could tie it in a short ponytail, lecturers started commenting on it and me (being the regulation-abiding goody-two-shoes that I used to be) went to see the dean about getting permission for it.I explained to him that I thought I might be transgender (he was a psychiatrist, by the way) and keeping my hair long actually reduced my dysphoria; could I be allowed to keep my hair long?He said no.He referred me to another psychiatrist who diagnosed me with anxiety + depression and that my “gender confusion” was the side effect of having anxiety + depression. She decided to start me on the miracle drug of the day - Zoloft.Needless to say, that drug only made me feel worse and I failed the finals that year. (Partly due to the effects of the drugs, and partly because the examiner who took me really hated my long hair and decided to fail me for a minor mistake I made.)I cut my hair short, stopped the Zoloft, retook the remedial exam, and went on to finish medical school.Fast forward 16 years, and I now find myself working at the same hospital with that psychiatrist who diagnosed me with “gender confusion” due to anxiety + depression.I haven’t run into her yet (psychiatrists have little use for radiologists), but when I do - I’d imagine that I’d do a little courtsey in front of her and tell her that all she needed to do to fix my anxiety + depression was to just give me that damn permission to keep my hair long.
