Does Windows 10 send your personal file contents to Microsoft?

Before I answer your question, let me give you a word of brainiacHere, lets think like temporary computer scientists!Have you heard of Artificial Intelligence,Computer Vision,Big Data,Data centers,Distributed Computing,Quantum Computing to mention but a few.NOTE: Remember this from now onwards; 21 century is a digital book whereby Your bank records, medical histories, voting patterns, emails, phone calls, your education data and your behaviors and characteristics on social networks, are being evaluated by highly intelligent software programs based on artificial intelligence;which are timely monitored by multibillionaire corporations globally;in order to predict their future. Big investments in data centers, technologies which handle big data.and so forth. Now back to your question:The reality is, we can’t know what Microsoft is doing with your private data, but the release of the updated privacy policy and service agreement can give us some great insight. Yes, these long and tedious documents leave a lot of room for interpretation, but they also inspire something important: a discussion about how data harvesting and lack of digital privacy has become normalized.Cortana: your personal assistant, or spy machine?Cortana is your voice-activated personal assistant, much like Siri and Google Now. But in order for her to operate, Windows 10 collects your personal information to better serve you. This includes calendar events, contact information, alarm settings, what you view and purchase, your browsing history, emails and text messages… “and more”.Data syncing with OneDriveOneDrive is Microsoft’s cloud storage system, and it comes with the Windows 10 territory. You might think it’s great because there is no additional sign up or installment required and you can access it from any of your Microsoft devices. But this new convenience comes with a price.Every time you are signed into your machine with your Microsoft account, your operating system immediately syncs your settings and other data to company’s servers. This includes browser behavior and history, as well as mobile hotspot and Wi-Fi network passwords. What are they doing with this information? If you had the time to read through the long privacy policy and service agreement, you might get a vague understanding of what Microsoft will do with your data, but little more. Besides, we all know better than to take giant corporations for their word – they have their own interests to look after. The real questions end up being, what can Microsoft do with this information? And ultimately, what are they mostly likely to do with it?Advertisers can “serve” you better!People are getting used to free services online left and right, so these expectations dominate the tech marketplace right now. Windows 10 doesn’t cost you any money, but it still comes at a price. As Alec Meer of Rock Paper Shotgun points out, Microsoft is increasingly trying to compete with Google through software and applications. But this model requires that, “money comes from harvesting data and flogging it to advertisers and other organisations who want to know exactly what we’re all up to online”.Comply with big brotherMicrosoft doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to surveillance state issues:Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies…It’s important to note that while this may seem horrifying to some, it’s really not so different from any other privacy agreement. Just take a look at this snippet from Apple’s privacy policy:It may be necessary − by law, legal process, litigation, and/or requests from public and governmental authorities within or outside your country of residence − for Apple to disclose your personal information. We may also disclose information about you if we determine that for purposes of national security, law enforcement, or other issues of public importance, disclosure is necessary or appropriate. At the end of the day, there are few companies that are able to take a stance against big government agencies. The best you can hope for is providers who don’t bury this in privacy agreements, but who are upfront and honest about their current operations as they relate to the surveillance state. What could go wrong? Why should I care?As an infamous activist once said, “Arguing that you don’t care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is not different than saying you don’t care about free speech because you have nothing to say.”But if that’s not reason enough to get up in arms, there are a number of practical concerns to consider. First and foremost, you don’t know which ad networks this data is going to, and you don’t know what their policies for dealing with this very private information are. What happens in the event of a hack? You might feel safe if your information is with a big company like Microsoft, which undoubtedly has major systems in place to protect your data, but do you really trust any of Microsoft’s ad network customers? A hacker could trace these transactions and conduct a large-scale hack just by finding a single vulnerability in this line of data transfer. You might say you have nothing to hide, and that the only person who does is clearly breaking the law. If that’s truly the case, why don’t you leave your bank account details in the comments below? The real truth: Microsoft isn’t the only bad guyShifting tides in modern culture have created two dangerous and commonly accepted thoughts on digital privacy, which could make you think that:Privacy must be compromised for safety.Privacy must be compromised for convenience. While there are serious debates on the subject, it’s important to stop and wonder who is ultimately responsible for these ideas, which create the basis for how many companies, institutions, and individuals make their decisions about privacy. But the reality is, the Windows 10 privacy agreement isn’t so much a revelation as a sign of the times. While it has understandably stirred up some controversy, it hasn’t inspired a mass exodus from use of Microsoft software or products. This is as it should be, because most of us know that it isn’t different with the developers of other major operating systems and mobile operating systems…like Apple and Google.Siri’s telling everyone what you did last nightSure, Apple and Google may have made a show of their commitment to user privacy, with smartphone encryption and very convincing, public battles with high-profile government agencies.Apple has admitted Siri voice data is being sent to third partiesBut you shouldn’t let these PR stunts fool you. Even when these companies have the best intentions, there is still a bottom line at the end of the day, and that’s money.Don’t believe us? Cortana isn’t the only personal assistant who likes to abuse your privacy. Apple hands your voice recordings over to third parties for analysis, and you agreed to it in the privacy agreement. Whether it’s a personal message to your sweetheart or your child asking Siri silly questions, Apple stores those messages for two years and essentially does with them what they want.It might be tempting to switch over to Google Now for your voice commands, but that would come at the cost of both your privacy and sanity. Google Now has a feature called Now cards, which are recommendations for products, services, and information based on your messages and recent searches. Even if you don’t rely on Google Now too much for recommendations, Google already knows so much about you because at some point you have probably used their products or services. And if you use Gmail, you’ll note that Google has been serving ads through Gmail for some time now – and if you haven’t noticed any, just check under your Gmail’s “Promotions” tab. They get information straight out of your private emails to help their ad network partners target you. It’s right there in their privacy agreement. Microsoft even attacked Gmail over these privacy violations and launched a “You got Scroogled” marketing campaign. What you can do to protect your privacyThe reality is, short of becoming a Linux user or developing your own operating system, there is little you can do to keep your information entirely private. Even recent Windows 7 and 8 updates come with their own host of privacy issues, so don’t think you’re out of the woods just because you haven’t made the move to 10.But there are several steps you can take to maximize your privacy while using Windows 10, and we encourage you to explore these options – whatever agency you can take over your privacy is better than none.Windows 10 setting options to look intoIf you have yet to install Windows 10 be sure to decline the Express Settings, which enables all of the privacy compromising features. Look through the different setting options and disable anything that makes you uncomfortable. If you already enabled the Express Settings when you downloaded Windows 10, go to the start menu and select Settings. From there you’ll find that most of these invasive features are listed under Privacy. There are many options to go through, and we encourage you to look carefully at each one. There are several big ones we think you may want to consider disabling:CortanaYou may not be comfortable with Cortana collecting so much personal information about you, and if that’s the case, you should disable the Getting to know you option under Speech, inking, & typing (this is located in the Privacy box).Additionally, you can click on the gear icon where you can access the Cortana settings, where you can enable or disable her (as well as manage information kept about you in the cloud).Advertising IDIf you are concerned about the data harvesting for advertisement purposes, we do recommend you disable setting, “let apps use your advertising ID for experiences across apps”. This is located underneath the General tab in the Privacy box.Unfortunately, just moving the toggle isn’t enough to keep ad networks from reaching your personal data. You will also have to go to this Microsoft site and disable personalized ads several times over.Microsoft allows you to personalize your ad settingsLocationYou may be used to location services, and they sure are handy when you’re trying to get from point A to B. But Microsoft’s new privacy agreement suggests they are sharing this location information (and your location history) with “trusted” third parties. If that makes you uncomfortable, it may be best to disable this. The Location tab is located directly beneath the General tab.Wi-Fi SenseWi-Fi Sense could be either very practical, or very invasive, depending on how you look at it. The new feature allows you to automatically share your Wi-Fi password with your Outlook, Skype, and Facebook contacts, which saves a lot of hassle when friends come over and need your password.WIndows 10 Wi-Fi Sense: do you need it?On the other hand, this may not be wise for those with broad social networks, because this option does not allow you to selectively pick which contacts to share it with. This option should be enabled or disabled on a case by case basis – it’s located in Network & Internet instead of Privacy.Use a local accountIf you’re not concerned with convenience and want maximum privacy, you should consider a using a local account instead of your Microsoft account. You will lose out on a number of features, particularly synchronization across your different devices. But if that doesn’t bother you, locate Accounts under Settings, then click Your account. You should see the option to “Sign in with a local account instead” just above where your picture should be.Try O&O ShutUp 10O&O ShutUp10If you’d like to simplify this process, consider using O&O Software’s free privacy tool, ShutUp 10. This tool simplifies the privacy process by giving you a single interface to deal with all of the myriad of settings you’d like to enable or disable on Windows 10. You can also simply apply all of their recommended settings.O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed. Moreover, it will not install or download potentially unwanted or unnecessary software (PUPs), like so many other programs do these days!O&O ShutUp10 allows you to easily disable Windows 10 settingsEducate yourself about privacy options that feel right for youAt the end of the day, you might be tempted to throw up your hands and give up perusing privacy at all. You might not see the point, since disabling certain settings doesn’t really guarantee that you are not being spied on, or that your personal data isn’t being sold or distributed. You might feel that you might as well have the conveniences of certain tools then, or would prefer more relevant advertising. But if we all collectively begin to educate ourselves about our privacy options and pursue them, we have a better chance of creating a culture that is concerned with cyber safety and privacy, instead of one that just thinks it’s a cost needed for a better world. Thanks for Reading Big Bless

How has Nintendo evolved over time?

Nintendo is hands down my favorite company. I can always rely on good content, and quality goods. They have been a huge part of my childhood, and are still keeping me busy even today. It is always a conversation-worthy topic in my eyes.On top of being a Nintendo fan, I have also done quite a bit of research regarding them, too. I know a shit ton of stuff about the company, all the way from the very beginning to now.How has it evolved you may ask? Well, let the nerd tell you. Be prepared for a longer read! So, let’s start from the very beginning shall we?It started in 1889, September 23rd. The founder of Nintendo? Fusajiro Yamauchi is your guy. Being the first president and founder of the hugely successful company you know today, he was born on November 22nd, 1859.Obviously, it wasn’t game consoles Nintendo made at the very beginning. It was actually handmade cards. These cards were for a Japanese game known as Hanafuda cards. Hanafuda translates to “flower cards” by the way!Above - Modern-day “Flower Cards”But why did Fusajiro decide to make a business around silly cards? Well, back during the time of Nintendo’s beginning- Japan had a ban on western games involving playing cards because it related to gambling, and western-related things in general. Since there was a lack of cards, Fusajiro saw a marketing opportunity, and opened up his brand new store.Sooner than later, his handmade cards became quite popular. People were buying these cards from all directions. It was starting to be quite a good payoff for some hard work. Fusajiro also hired assistants to help mass-produce the cards. Making it even MORE popular and successful. In 1933, it was formally addressed as Yamauchi Nintendo & Co. Ltd. and after continued success, they re-named it to Nintendo Playing Card Co. Ltd. sometime during the year 1951.Above - The plate in front of the former HQ of Nintendo Playing Card Co. LtdAfter many years of succession, Fusajiro re-named Nintendo once again to the shorter, more recognizable, Nintendo Co. Ltd. in 1963. After the re-name, the company started to adapt other ways of making money. These included a Taxi service, a food-network whom sold rice, a TV network and even Love Hotels.Love Hotels… This is most likely the darkest point in Nintendo’s history. Why? Well, it was a hotel… That gave it’s consumers and party-goers “love” or more formerly known as legal prostitution.Above - A picture of a Love Hotel with concealed windows, for maximizing privacy and fun times with your local hotel-slutEventually, all of these efforts on these businesses failed. Along with a collapse in Nintendo’s card-market. Nintendo was really ending up less of a “good-company” and more of a “loser-company”. Nintendo tried entering new markets such as children's toys in 1966, but never did end up succeeding. And once, they managed to get a market value of no more than ¥60. (That’s $8.44 USD currently!)With the toy business, Nintendo actually did manage to produce some popular items. In my opinion, the most interesting one was the Love Tester.Above - A picture of the infamous Love Tester. Marketed towards young males and females respectively.Another product Nintendo produced was a series of Light-Gun games. Games of which you would have a little pistol, and point it at a screen. These were probably, the thing that made Nintendo click. In 1973, Nintendo moved all of its time and dedication towards the Laser Clay Shooting System. Which was… You guessed it. The same shit as the Light-Guns. They set up venues in abandoned bowling alleys with Light-Gun machines. They also made several other variations of the gun, even after Laser Clay Shooting Systems was a dud in the marketing industry due to expensive costs.Above - A venue for Laser Clay Shooting Nintendo had ownedBut Nintendo wasn’t bothered from the shut-down. Because they had found a new market. What was that market? Video games. Yep. The moment you’ve all been waiting for. What Nintendo is REALLY known for. Their video games and consoles. In 1974, Nintendo was securing the rights to distribute the Magnavox Odyssey in Japan. The Magnavox was the very first video game entertainment system made commercially available.Above - The Magnavox OdysseySoon, Nintendo decided to produce their OWN video game consoles. Along with games, too. The very first video game console for home use was theColor-TV-Game consoles.Above - The original Color-TV-Game consoleDuring this time. Nintendo had hired a student-developer who’s named Shigeru Miyamoto. He is currently the lead developer of Nintendo, and has made some of the biggest contributions to Nintendo as a whole.Above - Shigeru MiyamotoCome the year 1975, Nintendo was moving into the Arcade Industry. They made some games for arcades to use, and some of these games are the most iconic in history. These games include Donkey Kong, designed by Shigeru. With Donkey Kong’s obvious success, there was a man known as Jump Man. The early iteration of Mario. Nintendo’s current mascot and truly most recognizable franchise.Above - Jump Man, a prototype for MarioSoon, Nintendo had a brilliant idea… Handheld game devices. A way to a portability-function to video games… Nintendo is no stranger to handheld devices. And theywere actually, the inventor.Meet the Game and Watch.Above - A Game and Watch system for a game named “Ball”The Game and Watch systems were amazing. They were the very first portable game. You could play it in the car, on the bus, in the bath, on a tree, cut in half, down the roa- You get it. It was portable. Providing you had light and batteries, you could play some Game and Watch.Later, a Game and Watch system was made for Donkey Kong. Introducing a new type of control… The D-Pad. Patented by Nintendo, it received an award and everything.Above - Even with the most recent console, the Nintendo Switch you can see the cross-shaped D-Pad being used.In 1983, Nintendo made a new home console. This was called the Family Computer(Aka the Famicom) released in Japan. With it’s release, they ported some of the best games you had in the arcades, making them available for you to play at your house. It’s like, you could be top-notch couch potato now! Awesome!Above - The FamicomWhen 1985 rolled by, Nintendo released a new, re-worked version of the Famicom in the US… The Nintendo Entertainment System(NES). Along with every NES console, you got a cartridge, and on that cartridge you could play either Duck Hunt with the Light-gun, or Super Mario Bros. Nintendo’s first implementation of Mario. Super Mario Bros. is one of the most, best-selling games of all time. And, has made an insane impact on video-games today.Above - The NESNintendo. They were growing massively. And quickly, too.Later, Nintendo took another shot at the handheld systems.Meet the Gameboy.Above - The original GameboyMan, was this thing crazy for Nintendo. Released in Japan on April 21st, 1989. They managed to bring portability back again. Striking a crazy deal with the popular game Tetris. When ever you officially bought a Gameboy, it would come bundled with Tetris. With the Gameboy also game one of Nintendo’s top-selling franchises… Pokemon.Above - Pokemon Red released for the GameboyAfter Nintendo was obviously the leader in video gaming, they weren’t stopping anytime soon. They had to come up with a new console. And what a better way to do that than make an official “second” version of the Famicom/NES.The Super Famicom, and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.Above - Left, Super Famicom - Right, Super Nintendo Entertainment SystemThe successors of the Famicom and NES were simply, a beefier version of the original. With more capability when running games, and adding 2 more buttons to toy around with. The successors were truly a good decision on behalf of Nintendo. But you see, Nintendo did produce a shitty console then, too. Let me tell you about the Virtual Boy.This is the Virtual Boy. It was the very first form of virtual reality(VR) that was cheap and available to the general public. Now, this looks dope doesn’t it? I agree. It is pretty cool.Being released in 1995, it wasn’t that much of a hit actually. The concept is simple. That little red box it what you look into, and you control the game you’re playing with the controller. Now, since VR was quite a new thing, making it afforable was hard. So instead of having top-shit… The games looked like this:Above - Red Alarm, one of the four games you would get when you purchased the Virtual BoySee the red? Yeah that’s the only color you’d see. Making it quite painful to use. I can’t say much more than that. The system was one of the worst things Nintendo produced and it was quickly, and quietly discontinued.Nintendo wasn’t affected much from the Virtual Boy’s failure, in fact. They probably got even BETTER at their job with the release of a new console. With top-tech of the day and age, comes the mythical Nintendo 64Above - A Nintendo 64 consoleOnce again, Nintendo blows the crowd away, with a system capable of playing 3D games. With some of the best games ever being released on it.Man, Nintendo out did themselves on this one. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the absolute best selling console for Nintendo due to other consoles with 3D capabilities, but was still a major hit.Being released in 1996, you would have access to a brand new console, with hit games being discussed even now. These games are as followed:Super Mario 64Paper MarioThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeThe Legend of Zelda: Majora’s MaskStarfox 64F-Zero XSuper Smash Bros. And many more…But Nintendo had more. Oh boy they kept going. They went straight to another handheld… While it may not be 100% original… It brought color… To your palms.Above - The Atomic Purple version of the Gameboy Color, one of the most popular versionsDuring the year 1998, the successor of the Gameboy was released. It was the same two-button device with a screen, but instead of it being black and white… You had color. Yes, you heard me right. You could have the rainbow in your hands during that dreadful car ride to visit your grandparents. It was a good device, and still is. With flashcarts you can buy to run Homebrew off of the device… It is STILL a discuss-able item. It was also one of the first handhelds to feature backwards compatibility. Notably with the original Gameboy.Nintendo decided to do another handheld console though, why? Good question. Although I do know that it was a really fucking good console. And is once again, still very popular today.Say hello… To the Gameboy Advance.Above - Image of a purple Gameboy AdvanceSelling in stores around the globe during the year 2001, you had the Gameboy Advance. More commonly known as the GBA.The GBA was simply, a more “comfortable” version of the other Gameboy’s, but with more oomph, and a new form of cartridge. Come the new games, and more and more children walking around with a GBA… Later, released a smaller, more traditional GBA. But instead with a fold-able concept, and smaller all-together. The clam-shell design was soon to return…But then…Nintendo released a beast. Although, quite the underappreciated beast at that. This was the Gamecube. Released the same year of the GBA.Unfortunately, the Gamecube did not take off. And it is quite a shame. It was a very powerful console for it’s time, and was priced fair, too. However, due to the other consoles at the time, it was lost in the sales of the Playstations and SEGA systems. What a shame. (The controllers were absolute ass though)In 2004, Nintendo released the Nintendo DS. Nintendo’s fourth major handheld console.Above - A Candy Pink colored Nintendo DS. The originalThe Nintendo DS was absolutely in-humane. It was like… Dude…Bringing back the clam-shell design, it also included a few new features… And with the features came the most feature-efficient games… Ever.4 main features were included.A touchscreen. Yeah. Crazy. I know. This was literally, revolutionary. Not only did it beat the phones to using touch screens for gaming, but also included a stylus. (Provided you didn’t chew it up or lose it like I did)A microphone. Yeah, that’s right. This motherfucker had a microphone in it. It had games where you’d literally need to yell at the device to trigger a mechanic or something along those lines.Backwards compatibility with GBA cartridges. I don’t think I need to explain this one… But Nintendo? For your info, backwards compatibility ROCKS!Wireless connection. Yep, you could play with your friends locally. Insert definition of awesome here. After the crazy success, Nintendo released a newer version of it. Ultimately replacing the Gameboy line of consoles…With brand new features such as a home menu, a shop you could buy things from provided you had internet access, an internet browser… How good could it get? Oh, right. It was smaller, and probably named after the iPhone. The Nintendo DSi / The Nintendo DS LiteAbove - Nintendo DSi’s slick and compact design, featuring a built in camera, as shown in the pictureI don’t really need to tell you much about this beast… But there is ONE sad thing about it…With it being smaller, the backwards compatibility of GBA cartridges was removed…Rip.Oh? What’s this?Ah! Why it’s a Nintendo Wii! How interesting!Above - The Nintendo Wii alongside its native controller, the Wii-moteAccording to the world, this was reveloutionary. Why? The Wii-motes motion sensing function.Think of it like a modern day Light-Gun. You would point it at a sensor, and it would move a little cursor around the screen. You could pull the trigger, push the buttons, play tenni- Yep. You can play virtual sports with this thing.Nintendo, is probably one of the very few game companies who actually managed to bring fitness into their console, and actually have it succeed, too.My favorite? Wii Bowling. Obviously.Above - Players Mii characters bowling in a virtual world. The Mii on the left is winning by the way.But see the Wii introduced some new things… Like always. But these things were some of my favorites…Virtual Console. Simply to put it, if you paid Nintendo a little bit of cash, you could play any of the games Nintendo released… But see, there was this thing called Virtual Console. What it did was great, buy an old game, and you could play it! For example, you could play the original Super Mario Bros on your un-modded Wii, officially ported by Nintendo. Your favorite money sucker today.Backwards compatibility with most Gamecube games. Do I need to say it again? Yes? Okay then- BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY ROCKS!Mii characters. These are Nintendo’s avatars. Nothing that interesting, but a cool feature none than less. You had an app on your Wii that would allow you to design your own Mii and use them in games. Those are the things I liked about the Wii. Although, personally. I feel the Wii wasn’t the best. But you know what WAS the best?!?!?…DRUM ROLL PLEASE…Above - Image of a drum to simulate a drum rollTHE NINTENDO 3DS!!!!!Above - The original 3DS, commonly known as the o3DSI absolutely love this thing. I use mine every single day. With new features, obviously. This was legitimately the true successor of the DS’s. Although, what made this one so special?A few things, let me list them because lists are cool. The design. It is obviously a “part 2” of the Nintendo DS. And boy does it look hot lemme tell ya.The 3D. Now, not everyone likes using the 3D. Why? Because it isn’t needed, and hurts your eyes. But tough guys like me play only with 3D. Why? Because it actually fucking works. And you don’t need no silly theater glasses, either. Nuff’ said. The eShop. The eShop has been a recurring thing with Nintendo recently, and I am glad. It is a very smart idea, and allows more game developers to submit content without needing to make it into a cartridge. Speaking of cartridges…The backwards compatibility. Backwards compatibility, once again. Why not? Right? Well, the 3DS is backwards compatible with the original Nintendo DS cartridges, but not vice versa. The apps. So, it includes Mii maker. That’s the same shit the Wii has. That’s fine with me! But it also has a built-in audio-player system. If you put music onto the SD card, you can listen to that music. Awesome. Also, it has a camera…The cameras. Yeah, it’s got two of em’. One front-facing for selfies, and 2 at the back for normal pictures. Wait… Two? What are they Apple? LAME. No you retard. They actually use the two cameras for something extremely special… You can take photos with 3D effects. Now, it might not be the absolute best, but it’s still pretty flippin’ cool man.The Homebrew community. So, once upon a time there was this game and it broke the 3DS and hackers got into is and then was born… Homebrew for the Nintendo 3DS.So like, you can download shit for your 3DS that Nintendo hasn’t released. But others have made. for example, my 3DS can be turned into a pretty awesome retro-emulation station thanks to things like ROM converters or emulators built to run on the 3DS. If you’re interested, I really suggest taking a look at Homebrew, modding and hacking on the 3DS.So, that’s just the o3DS though. I’m not going to go too in-depth about the other versions of it, but let me just say there are 6 different versions. Each more powerful than the other. But the original… Will always be my favorite…Alright, two more consoles to go. Almost done…The WiiUAbove - A white WiiU consoleThe WiiU is the successor of the Wii. With new games, better hardware, and a brand new concept… Docking.Docking, in console logic is when you can place the handheld portion of a console onto a platform or something similar, and then play it on a monitor or TV. Or, if you would like you could play it handheld, with the screen. Some games use both the handheld screen, and the TV screen. Making it in theory, a less portable 2-screen game device. Not much is different with the WiiU. It simple has a new concept, new games and better shit inside it.And finally…The Nintendo Switch.Above - The Nintendo Switch, Nintendo’s latest console as of the time this answer was writtenThe Nintendo Switch took the public by surprise. It was heard of, but was less hyped than I would have expected. How did you treat your migraine headaches?

Original Question | How did you treat your migraine headaches? I am suffering from migraine on daily basis. Please help me.The following is what I have done…I stopped all consuming caffeine and chocolate because I have a clear problem of triggers with both.I don’t smoke and stopped drinking alcohol. Alcohol was tolerated better when I was younger. I had terrible allergies and it helped to naturally dehydrate me so that the allergen effects (swelling in my head) were not as bad. As I have aged, I do not eat enough to compensate for the problems alcohol creates in my stomach and I do not exercise enough to increase my caloric intake and compensate for the deleterious effects of alcohol.I began to exercise every day to some degree and I limited foods (e.g. night shade plants) that cause swelling. As I have Ulcerative Colitis and inflammatory arthritis this is necessary to help keep swelling down in the joints and colon.I tried heat and cold application to my head areas to see how it affected or did not affect my head. Eventually just putting my hands in hot water would cause the dilated blood vessels in the back of my neck to shrink back to normal. Putting ice in that area helped reduce the dilation as well.I had bad allergies and knew my father’s migraines when he was younger could be triggered by sinus inflammation… so I also applied heat to my sinus cavities in case they were full with a horse shoe shaped microwavable heat wrap. I would put in on a flat surface where I could lay my face down with it covering my sinus areas. (You can also freeze it to use on the neck conversely. ) I got mine from DreamTime Inc.I used Tiger balm on my face (only on the sinus cavities) when the sinuses became too full to manage with heat alone. (I use the Ultra Strength which is white, as the red/Extra strength will stain clothing.) Any menthol type product would likely work as well. I also used this to help relieve muscle aches from tension.I went to the eye doctor and got glasses. I turns out that I have had an astigmatism for a long time which results in eye strain and muscle knots in my back after long periods of sitting at the computer. I was getting eye strain from the using my eyes so intensely for work and play, so I planned in breaks between each let my eyes rest.I wear sunglasses out of doors as I have light sensitivity and bright light can trigger a migraine to start.I evaluated my diet and learned to cook from raw foods rather than eating prepackaged meals or processed foods. I increased fresh fruits and vegetables, and added water to my daily diet when thirsty (rather than other liquids). I looked for common problematic foods and those that also similarly helped people like myself and did some experimentation as well as documentation. 9 Foods that Can Cause Chronic Pain and 9 that Can Alleviate It.I removed all added sugar and extra grain (bread and pasta) from my diet by conforming to some of Dr. Bernstein’s book recommendations that a friend was using to help control his diabetes. About - Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. A Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars. Official Web Site & No Sugars, No Grains: Is This the Key to Long-Term Health? I realized my diet was high in processed foods, too high in foods that metabolized directly to sugar and not high enough in fruits, vegetables, water, and above all, I ate about 50% more than I needed to for my body.I watched the documentary Sugar Coated which shows how much of the starchy food that we eat is metabolized through the liver as sugar.I turned to food combining and bought a pocket guide for reference to aid in my food choices. Food Combining Charts - by Wayne Pickering - Momentum98I have also rearranged an image that is free to download as a PDF which includes food combining and digestion times for things in the stomach as well as descriptions of all food categories.(Updated 4–26–2019) To learn more about how the body digest you can go to this article How Long Does It Take to Digest FoodI incorporated eating using the 8 Hour diet to give my intestines a rest 8-Hour Diet: Fast 16 Hours to Lose. I also started moving to eating mostly plant based proteins rather than eating so much meat. (I do not need same amount of food, protein, and calories that those who worked a farm in the 1800′s did!) Forks Over Knives | Official Website Below is one image of a plant based protein meal…I found that my colitis was helped by resting my stomach once a week, so I fasted intermittently, which then seemed to help my head rest and recover from headache symptoms that had accumulated over that week.Intermittent fasting video added on 5–23–2019I educated myself in good dental health as my bite needed some help (and so did my brushing habits). Grinding my teeth at night out of stress did not help the situation. American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (AACP) ResourcesI investigated my posture’s affects on the overall muscle strain through my back to my head. I realized that my posture was bad. My head was pushed forward and did not float above my shoulders. While my shoulders were to be directly above my hips, when sitting my feet needed to be planted firmly on the ground, with my legs in the correct position straight from chair to floor.Instead I had been slouching and creating more strain for my neck, back and shoulder muscles as well as my gut. It took a while and some pain to reverse what had become natural. Poor Posture & Headache & Forward head posture.*I learned the Alexander technique which is a very good way to manage your posture from a holistic approach rather simply trying to sit straight and move one body piece at a time into their correct positions.I went to Acupuncture to help reduce the physical pain I was in, to restore my immune system and get off of the drug Prednisone. The acupuncture was started for one reason but resulted in reducing my allergies and migraines as well as increasing my overall energy and feeling of well being.I took Biofeedback training so that I could learn how to calm down with deep breathing and focus. Each time I felt overwhelmed I used this technique to help deal with my emotions and their effects on my body.I learned Shiatsu and began massaging my muscles. I found that many muscle knots would cluster around my head and neck which might have started out as tension headaches but would eventually trigger a migraine. I also had clusters of muscles in my back that would create the right conditions to feed a migraine once triggered.I created a more restorative sleep regimen. I began making sure that I got enough rest and used sleeping techniques to help me get more quality level of sleep. I allow myself to catch the “sleep train.” My sister came up with this term which has been adopted by family members. It is the period that the body releases the natural sleep chemicals signaling that you are ready to sleep. Yawning, being drowsy, etc… However the train only comes to the station on it’s own schedule, if you’re not there to catch it, you need to wait out for the next one to arrive. And, that does not mean that another will come that night. ~Amanda LopezBasically… if you override your bodies natural ability to fall asleep, you will secrete an amount of adrenaline to push you through to a second wind state which will then need to be exhausted before your body will allow you to sleep again naturally. Maintaining natural sleep cycles are necessary for migraine prevention as they allow the brain and body to recover from both mental and physical stresses of each day. When these stresses build without rest, they can contribute to migraines.I stopped taking many preventative prescribed drugs. I would not say this is good thing for everyone to do, but I have had such marked side effects from almost every drug I take that reducing my intake of those that seemed (to me) superfluous, helped me decide which medications were doing what, and how much I needed in general. I asked doctors for recommendations to replace any medication with something natural, if there was a choice. I also followed the tenets that many healthy people follow, eat right, exercise, get out and be social, work at balance in all things, even the application of balance.I worked at reducing or managing stress. My emotional well being was more important than I surmised to stopping migraines before they became unstoppable. I might not have had the triggers bring me to full blown state of collapse if I was more aware of the mechanisms that fed into why they stayed once they were triggered. (I have mentioned many of the contributing factors already.)And finally…I wrote in a journal for a year and compiled the data. Understanding what triggers my own migraines was essential in figuring out how to manage them. Eventually some things began to “stick out” as closely related to when I got migraines. Yet the documentation alone was revealing in how much I was doing that was contrary to how I wished to live my life. So as best I could, I made changes in my exercise habits, social life, personal care and lastly my attitude toward myself. Making my health and the control of the migraines a priority was important. Also, realizing that I was the person in the very best position to understand my needs and accommodate them was essential. All the information from other sources were great, but I was the person who needed to implement them in a way that worked for me.There is probably more… so I will add if I think of it.Addendum:I started taking Selectrolytes when warranted. This product helps return electrolytes to your system after prolonged illness (fluid loss). It was created by a father who’s daughter, ISSY (Isabella) was dying of cancer. When she was physically ill (vomited) due to chemotherapy, which made keeping food down difficult, her electrolytes were lost also. This mixture replaced them for her. I once had a migraine due to severe stomach issues (diarrhea) causing the loss of my bodies electrolytes. One swig of this fluid and that particular type of migraine was cured! I buy it from Morin Labs a nutriceutical company committed to provide effective, affordable natural health products to assist those in need.I massage my head and ears. The head gets forgotten about when so much pain is centered there. While you do not have a headache, it is good to massage the head regularly as well as the outer parts of the ears. The former helps move blood and oxygen while treating muscles usually forgotten about, the latter helps to calm you as they are acupressure points that help calm people (and animals) when pressed.I restrict or eat food. When I have eaten something that I am not familiar with or so much that my stomach may be creating more problems than I can consider, I might restrict food and let what is in my stomach pass through to see if the situation clears up. However, if I have not eaten in some time, I may be getting a headache from lack of eating. In this case, I might lick peanut butter to give my body the salt, protein and fat it might need to recover in one shot. I do this slowly to see if it helps the headache get better, but if not, I stop eating it.I got allergy tested. I am allergic to trees & grass, dust, cosmetics, cats, smoke etc… being aware of this helped me make decisions about the environment that is best for me as well as steer clear of things I have a violent reaction to. They can all trigger a migraine or feed one.I went to a physical therapist. I was given a tens unit to deal with muscular knots and general pain. This helped me use non-invasive therapy to treat spasms that would previously been treated with palliative care using over the counter drugs. Instead the tens unit instruction from the PT helped treat many muscular problems rather than mask them.* (If you are very weak, this may harm rather than help so get advice from a doctor.)*The unit I received was not what you may see today that people buy with multiple settings of chopping, massaging, kneading for muscles, mine has simple two setting knobs of pulse width and frequency. Then you can increase or decrease the steady current to your own desired strength as in the picture below.I got my hormones checked. While I was given a choice to take supplements to replace them, I chose to forgo them and allow my body to find some sort of balance without adding more substances to it. (This was my personal choice.)I asked doctors for help. While this was my first step, it has been a long road and it is 40 years after my initial problems began. Now I use advice from traditional as well as non-traditional sources, American and foreign medical professionals to find things that may apply to me. I have turned away from medication and found all the things listed as helpful in my own journey, while I admit some people do not have the ability to remove medications that help. I personally had reactions that left me turning from medicine for something less invasive/more holistic.I took Bee Propolis and drank water with organic raw honey to aid in increasing my immune system health, using natural substances to bolster it. I was weak from medication side effects and my ability to gain energy to recover from colds, etc… All of my weakness was contributing to my migraine trigger response. There is a concoction that my friend uses which helps her in this same category but is too stringent for my stomach. She uses it for a detox/cleanse type of situation and it helps her with migraines. My 3-Ingredient Migraine and Headache Detox Remedy*I bought a Lumo Lift to help remind me that I was slouching. It is a small (less than 1″) very light device that magnetically attaches to/through clothing. Once set, it give’s near immediate feedback through a buzzing to the chest that indicates you are not sitting in the posture you set it to maintain (the posture you wish to reinforce). This is the most current technology I know of that reminds you to correct your posture continually as you work. You can link it to a cell phone and adjust the time intervals to longer or shorter and track you progress if that is what you desire.Update 7–6–2018:I massage myself with a wand, my neck and under my scull cap in the back where muscles can get knotted. I use it on my back where there are knots from over use of muscles. I also massage my head daily (with my hands too). I use a massage wand on the knots that are too hard for my hands to work out (or when my hands get tired). I always suggest to get the most simple wand possible with 2–3 speeds. You do not need one with variable speed algorithms to work out knots, you need one with a few steady speeds, so be careful and read the literature before you buy.I stretch daily (all day long for short periods) even if I cannot find the time to exercise, stretching and breathing help to oxygenate my system and allow the muscles some simple unwinding and relief. This can help condition the body towards preventing much of the associated problems of muscle during migraines. (I usually do the upper body stretching a few times an hour at my desk, while other floor exercises I do in the morning or evening or when I have the space and privacy.)I bought and sit on a Backjoy at my desk to help coax me to sit up properly when working at my computer. (It takes many reminders for me to keep my posture from creating more problems with my neck, back, shoulders etc…)Update 7–26–2018:Learned to breath fully with the following videos. This helps to retrain your body in correct breathing techniques, correct body position and learning why they are so important to your overall health. The first is with How to breathe | Belisa VranichThe next is Breathe to Heal | Max Strom | TEDxCapeMayI use a handheld wooden back massager to get to muscles in my back that I can’t reach. This also helps get at the two groups of muscles on either side of the spine. The spine is the communication line from the brain to the body. When you are tense, stressed or ill, this line gets congested, for lack of a better term. By massaging this area you can help clear much of the “congestion” which can help your body be more effective in healing itself naturally.I also use reflexology on my feet and hands to help me. It helps find what parts of me are needing some attention. And I can use a host of other non powered implements to help with the massaging.Besides all that I have said here… I have more to addUpdate 8–31–2018:I take Metagenics protien mix and herbulk as a food replacement when my stomach is upset as I have Ulcerative Colitis and an upset stomach can also spark a migraine (and keep it fueled). To calm my system down but keep from starving it of nutrients, I will stop eating meals but take this supplemental food and drink lots of water. It is a protien/vitamin/mineral mix that serves as a replacement source of nutrients. (I was sure I posted this here before!)I may take probiotics, my brand is VSL 3 (especially for UC sufferers) to help replace the good flora in my stomach and when I am having stomach problems and digestion gets really difficult.I may also add digestive enzymes to help my system in it’s efforts digesting. This is specific to my system and my problems so you might want to ask your doctor or your pharmacist whether these things are harmful at all, or may just waste your money. My whole digestive track has had to be rebuilt from years of using medications which slowed it down. I was told to begin by eating baby food but found that after 30 years of medication, my stomach needs some help. There are some that types of probiotic + digestive enzymes combinations you can find, so that you are covered both way in helping your digestion.
