PDF Editor FAQ

How was Condi Rice able to become a Stanford Full Professor in 1993 despite having only a modest academic publication record by 1993 (only 1 uni press book and no articles in top poli-sci journals)? Was it easier to become full prof at Stanford then?

I’ve often seen complaints on Quora about professors who lack real world experience. In some academic disciplines, that makes no sense. A pure mathematician who has spent their whole life pursuing pure mathematics in a university setting is perfectly qualified to guide students through the world of pure mathematics. A physicist who spends their life in university laboratories is in the real world. But it does make sense, in certain fields, to employ people based not just on their academic credentials, but on their experience outside the academic world. Condoleeza Rice started working for the State Department in the days of President Carter, and went on to serve on the National Security Council under President George H. Bush. Having a Ph.D. and some academic publications was important, I’m sure, because it meant that she knew how to deal with academic issues in a professional way, but her experience in the State Department meant she also brought valuable experience to the table that few academics would have. Of course, while working as a senior advisor to the President, she would not have spent a lot of time writing academic articles.I’m reminded of a conversation between two students studying PPE back in the 90’s about Dr. Zbigniew Pełczyński. Neither student questioned that he had the requisite qualifications to be a tutor, but one of them failed to understand why people considered it such a big deal to be tutored by Dr. Pełczyński. “I mean he’s published a couple of books, so what?” “A couple of books and a constitution”, came the reply. (Dr. Pełczyński played an important role in writing the new constitution of Poland).

I am interested in industrial design. What HLs should I take in IB? My high school makes everyone take HL English and History, so I have 2 HLs free.

I would advice that you research on the pre-requisites for the course that you want, I presume, in university/ college. This is very important because certain uni courses require you to take IB math/ chem or physics to be legible to apply. For example, in the National Univeristy of Singapore (NUS), a pre-requisite for the industrial design course is a pass in SL math/ chemistry/ physics. So, do the necessary research and select your HLs! Art and chem sound like good options. You may also want to consider doing an EE about industrial design to increase your chances of getting accepted.

Was holding your child back a year in school a good or a bad idea?

I’m a bit of a different story to a lot of others here. I was held back in between year 10 and year 11 - when I should’ve been going into year 12, I went into year 11 instead. There were a few reasons for this. One was that I’d home-schooled myself for year 11 as I was travelling with my family and mainstream schooling just wasn’t an option (I certainly wasn’t going to go to boarding school). Two was that, because I’d skipped several years earlier on in school, I was quite young - I would’ve graduated at 16 (about to turn 17). My mum thought it was best if I was kept back just to make sure I flourished both in year 12 and when I got to uni (e.g drinking - nobody likes to be the only underage one at uni). But it was a disaster. I’d gone to that school previously and so year 11 was great, because I could hang out with all my friends (who were in year 12). When they graduated and left though I didn’t have any roots anymore and it was incredibly isolating. Most people in that school had come in either prep/kindergarten or year 7 (as I did initially), so they all had known each other for years. The isolation was really bad and I struggled to make new friends. I was also struggling with depression and anxiety. Most of what I did in year 12 didn’t really have year 11 as requisite knowledge, so I feel I would’ve done around as well if I hadn’t been kept back. Heck, even if I hadn’t, I got such a high mark that I would’ve gotten into law even if my mark had been significantly lower.Sooo yeah it wasn’t a bad *idea*, it just had a terrible outcome.

Most of my PDF work is minor editing and signing PDF forms and documents. CocoDoc does everything I need and the fact that I can upload documents directly to the site is fantastic!
