As a former Australian Army Officer I find it unimaginable that the Australian military would enforce the will of a tyrannical leader. People will have a different opinion on what a Tyrant is but I could not imagine in my wildest dreams the Australian military willingly participating in political purges etc.Australian soldiers are renowned for being a little untrusting of blind authority at the best of times. I could absolutely imagine that if you gave soldiers an order to do something unimaginable like a massacre that quite likely your soldiers would look you in the eye and tell you to get f^%$ed! I could see people at all levels of the command chain saying that the order was illegal and refusing to obey. I disobeyed a couple of illegal orders in my career for much less serious things.In 1997 I had a particular Sergeant that had recently returned from Somalia and was an avid shooter in his spare time. He was upset by the gun buyback to US levels of fanaticism. He was very upset and declared that the government would not take his guns, he would bury them in his backyard etc. In the end when he found out he could get a few thousand $$ to fix up some old car he was restoring his opinion softened and he happily traded them in. I caught him in the coffee room a few weeks later bragging about how well he made out selling his chinese assault rifle to the gun buyback!My personal opinion is that Guns are a tool. they are designed for a particular purpose, just like a saw, hammer or spanner. An assault rifle or machine gun is designed for the express purpose of taking other human lives. If you are not in a position to be taking lives, if that is not your job then why do you need access to that tool.In terms of 'rights' and personal freedoms I think they must be weighed against the greater good. My right to safely send my kids to school or safely go shopping or to the cinema or just go about my personal business is a greater right than somebody else's right to stroke their ego with a powerful weapon. I have travelled the world and fired all manner of weapons, from German MG44/MG3 heavy MGs to US Barrett .50 cal to WW2 era Thompson SMG, Cold War AK47, RPK etc and everything in between. I have fired artillery and tank (main armament and coax). I've called in artillery fire and sat rocking in an APC at the edge of a safety template whilst 1000 lb bombs laded a Km away. I have no interest in owning any weapons now, none at all.I'm now a middle aged guy that works in an office Mon-Fri. There is nothing I now do in my corporate existence that even remotely compares to combat and the most physically dangerous thing I am likely to face is the drive to and from work. Why would i need an assault rifle at home? What would be the purpose? To guard against home invaders? T0 protect me from a tyrannical government? Seriously? What about Aliens, do i need a tinfoil hat as well? If people want to stroke their ego by running around with a machine gun head down to your local recruiting office and put your personal safety where your ego is.
