Who was the ‘Monster of Austria’?
Joseph Fritzl, was born in Amstetten, Austria on April 6th 1935.At the age of 21, he married 18 year old Rosemarie in 1955,With whom he had seven children, two sons and five daughters. The youngest Elizabeth was born on April 6th 1966.It was reported in 1977 he began to sexually abuse Elizabeth at the tender age of 11.When Elizabeth was 15 she ran away from home to Vienna where she was staying with a friend. Her parents reported her missing and she was returned home to her parents. In August 1984 when Elizabeth was 18, her father, Fritzl, lured her to the basement of their home with the excuse of needing help to carry a door that was needed to be put in storage. He had turned the basement into a prison where Elizabeth would be held in captivity. The door was the last item he needed to finish the chamber. After putting the door in place he used an Ether soaked towel to incapacitate Elizabeth, and locked her in the prison. After Elizabeth disappeared her mother filed a missing persons report, but because she had run away from home before, the police did not follow up on her disappearance as was proper procedure.A month after her disappearance Fritzl, turned over a letter written by Elizabeth that he had forced her to write. The letter stated that she was tired of living with her family and was now living with a friend, (the letter was postmarked from Braunau). The letter also warned her parents not to search for her or she would leave the country. The authorities stopped all investigations. For the following 24 years Elizabeth was held captive by her father in the basement, where he would visit her with food, and would systematically rape and torture her.He admitted this to the authorities after his arrest. While Elizabeth was in captivity she gave birth to seven children, one dying in infancy. All of the children were born in the chamber, with no medical care. Fritzl helped Elizabeth give birth. Agggg!Fritzl would remove the children (3) from the basement, telling authorities that his grandchildren just appeared on his doorstep. He and his wife became foster parents to the children.Social service upon visits to the home found nothing of suspicion. After the birth of the fourth child he had Elizabeth and the other children dig for years to enlarge the basement from, 35 m^2 to 55 m^2.For punishment he refused to take food to Elizabeth and he threatened that he would gas the children in order to keep her under his control, hinder her escaping. On April 19 2008, Elizabeth’s eldest daughter fell sick and Fritzl, seeking medical treatment for her, with the help of Elizabeth the child was carried out of the chamber. It was the first time in 24 years that Elizabeth saw the outside world. She was forced back into the chamber after the child was taken out.Upon admission to the hospital with kidney failure, Fritzl told the medical staff he had found a note written by its mother with the child. They became suspicious of Fritzl, and notified the authorities. The authorities via the news broadcast an appeal for Elizabeth to come forward with the medical history of the child. When no one came forward Elizabeth’s missing persons case was re-opened.Elizabeth coaxed her father to let her visit her child in the hospital.A week later Fritzl showed up at the hospital with Elizabeth and two sons. The medical staff alerted the authorities; Elizabeth was questioned but refused to speak unless promised she’d never have to see her father again. For two hours Elizabeth told officials in graphic detail what she suffered at the hands of her father.Elizabeth told officers that he would rape her and forced her to re-enact sexual depravities he’d have her watch on porn videos. All this took place in front of the children. On April 26, 2008 shortly after midnight Fritzl was arrested, he was 73 years old (that piece of floating sh**).On April 27, Elizabeth her children and her mother were taken to a secret location. On April 29, DNA, proved Fritzl was the biological father to his daughter’s children. aghhhhh! On March 18, 2009 Elizabeth attended the second day of her father’s criminal trial in disguise, her testimony was given via video.Fritzl recognized Elizabeth sitting in the visitors’ pews in the courtroom and breaking down approaches the Judge and changes his plea from innocent to guilty. On March 19, Fritzl was sentenced to life imprisonment, without possibility of parole.Elizabeth and her children live in an undisclosed location. She was reunited with her other children and are said to be doing remarkably well considering what they had suffered.June 28, 2013 the basement of the Fritzl home was filled in with cement, and the house was sold on the open market.May 2017, Josef Fritzl, changed his name to, Josef Mayrhoff.*—*—*—*It boggles my mind and my sensibilities that a father would calculate how to imprison his own child.Torture and rape her systematically for 24 years, showing no remorse for his actions.Had his child/ grandchild not have gotten sick they would still be imprisoned suffering forgotten by the world.I am aware of the suffering of people around the world.Even here in my own country from economics.Others from war, refugees.what makes this case and such painful to me is I had the greatest of fathers, I was able to go to my father for anything, everything, he was my father I trusted him with my life,Elizabeth could not turn to the only man she should have had the utmost faith in.Not for advice or for protection. Why?He is evil personified! He was not a father and by changing his name does not change or absolve him from his new and well deserved title of,The Monster of Austria!Fritzl case - WikipediaImages courtesy of the Internet.
What is the real China? Are there two versions: the real one and the one they are making the world think it is?
Living in China for more than two decades, I took many photos from which you can get an insight into China. The following photos ( 2013~2017) range from big cities to rural villages, from day to night, from factories to religious architectures, from daily life to special moments. The logic of the photos is mainly based on time.Hongkong. Jan 23, 2013. Disneyland.Hongkong. Jan 24, 2013. Hongkong Ocean Park.Guilin, Guangxi. Feb 5, 2013.Guilin, Guangxi. Feb 6, 2013.Guangzhou. China Smart Home Expo and IC Expo.On the sea.Compared with Guangzhou and Hongkong, Shenzhen is kind of a new-built city full of dazzling skyscrapers and green trees where most of the people are young and open minded from different parts of China and even the world struggling for their dreams so that you can blend into this city as a member of it immediately without facing much discrimination. Meanwhile, it gives me a feeling of ‘floating in the air’ as the city lacks a ‘root’ like duckweed. Tourists may barely find its unique historical architectures travelling through the most parts of the city so that what they remember is usually new skyscrapers and busy traffic.Building modern architectures does not ruin a culture, but the old classical ones should be protected. Building a skyscraper is easy, but creating a civilisation is not. Shenzhen can be such an excellent city not depending on its tall buildings but on the people, on the location. Now China is developing too rapidly, building this and that, here and there. Several years ago when I studied in university and went home once a month, I got lost at my hometown! On a new street only about 2~3 km away from my home. The bus had changed its route. The buildings looked both familiar and strange. I even asked the way! After I told that incident to my parents, they felt surprised, amused and a bit angry while my father said: ‘laugh die people (笑死人, extremely laughable)! Nobody will believe it if I tell them!’. Many eastern towns get addicted to new skyscrapers and wide roads but fail to preserve its unique place so different towns look similar (actually the central government has realised that problem and put forward some policies about 特色文化小镇). It does enhance the living standard of people but that may make the people from the certain place confuse who they themselves really are. Especially now the level of globalisation is so high and also it seems globalisation is a kind of westernisation (now I realise modernisation doesn't mean westernisation). I’m afraid I will feel very confused about my identity as I’ve not studied my culture deeply but got exposed to western culture too much. To balance that, I’ve been trying learning more about my own culture and other different cultures. It sounds a bit ridiculous but it’s true. BTW, till now, I’ve not been abroad. Hopefully I will go sightseeing abroad this year to feel more various cultures in person and also see how brainwashed I am LOL.Guangzhou. May 20, 2017.
