I was looking at a new 1991 pickup when the salesman spotted me there. He came out and tossed me the keys and said “ take it for a spin” No drivers license check or anything. I took it by myself around a few blocks and when I got back he said they were taking $1000. off the sticker and he had a $1,300.00 rebate form. The sticker was already lower than I expected so I just bought it. My first new 1 ton diesel dually pickup for $17,800.00Now days a diesel engine costs over $10,000 extra. Back then it was only $3,500 extra. I drove that truck 400,000 miles and sold it 16 years later for $5,000.00

My mother loved to enter sweepstakes and contests, clip coupons, collect and send off "proofs of purchase" for rebates and free promotional merchandise, and send off for free samples, which always came with high value coupons to further entice the consumer into purchasing that product.Once a month, her lady friends from church would all come over for a "Coupon Klatch," where they would sit around the dining room table swapping amongst themselves all the latest gossip and coupons and rebate forms for products their families didn't buy or couldn't use, for ones they did.She would shop at all of the different grocery stores on double or triple coupon days to use her coupons on items that were on sale that week at each different store, and the most she ever saved on a single trip was getting a carload of groceries (about US$200 worth in 1980's prices) for about US$13.00.When I was a kid, my sisters and I thought it was silly and a waste of time, not to mention embarrassing to us if any of our friends were to see her using coupons at the grocery store, because in our minds, it wasn't like we were poor or anything.Now, as an adult, I realize that all of that time and effort was a big part of how she kept us well fed, clad in the latest fashions when we were in high school, and some years, when medical bills ate up most of the household budget, how she made Christmas and birthdays happen.When I was in high school, she won a "lifetime" supply of PaperMate WriteBros ballpoint pens.Like most of the prizes mentioned in previous answers, the pens all came at once, in one big box full of 24 packs of pens, in blue, black, green, and red.I don't recall exactly how many pens that was, but it was not as many as one might think, as they apparently calculated the estimated maximum writing life of each pen in a testing lab under controlled "perfect world" conditions, which would not align with real world usage and did not factor in for lost caps and other reasons ballpoint pens may clog or dry out.However, they actually turned out to be more than a lifetime supply, as she passed away in 1989. I still have some of those pens, which are probably about thirty years old now, and as a testament to the quality of Papermate products, they still work.
