PDF Editor FAQ

What is the most convincing evidence that the Bible is not historically or scientifically accurate?

The most convincing evidence is that you are both not even discussing the “correct bible”. What you are discussing is a very inaccurate translation from old greek and old hebrew texts which are themselves not first hand into modern english which contain tons of interpretation, misunderstandings and even mistakes.I did biblical exegesis in high school while learning old greek and translated parts of the codex sinaiticus, one of the oldest existing bible texts into German. The translations even in my class greatly varied as the old greek words have so many different meanings. And with greatly varied I mean that somebody translated for example “a village with 100 people” another “my big family” and the third “the Followers of God” and nothing was wrong. I actually remember a sentence about the sun. I translated it as an indicator ot time while the modern lutheran bible gave it a methaphorical meaning and writes something about hope. And actually I think I was right and not Luther. See my point? In modern christian theology it is not claimed that the bible is historically or scientifically completely accurate. Since the 1960s the historical-critical method to understand bible texts is accepted even by the catholic church. This means that texts have to been put in the historical and cultural context when they were created and there is absolutely no way to prove that we understand it correctly.

What is in your opinion the weirdest/most complicated thing about your language?

Wow. English has so many things to choose from! Or rather, from which to choose. That’s because it’s a mixture of two languages (Anglo and Latin), which has evolved and changed rules over time. One thing that really confuses my students is rules regarding plural and possessive forms of proper names that end in -s, -ch, or -z.Suppose you wanted to write a sentence about a family with the surname Bach that owned a house together. Which one would it be:The Bachs’ house? The Baches’ house? The Bachs’s house? The Baches’s house? The correct answer is the first one. When the name ends in a -ch, but it’s pronounced like a “k,” you just add an “s” to make it plural, then the apostrophe afterwards makes it possessive. But what about people with the surname Church? The -ch at the end of that name doesn’t make the “k” sound, so the house they own together is:The Churches’ house.A lot of Hispanic surnames end in -z (Ortiz, Hernandez, Fernandez, Ruiz, etc…) If it’s pronounced like an “s,” it’s treated like an “s.”The Hernandezes’ house. So many people… native English speakers… would just put “the Hernandez’ house,” that it’s becoming acceptable, but it’s technically incorrect. The rule is being bent to accommodate the fact that so many people break the rule.

What is the rudest/most unusual/most obnoxious thing you have seen someone do at a wedding?

I was at a wedding many years ago. The groom’s family were Jewish. The bride’s family were Christian. The bride’s father stood up to speak. He started with “I love my daughter, Abigail, with an A because she is Amazing. Then he gave a couple of sentences about why she was amazing. Then “I love my daughter, Abigail, with a B because she is Beautiful”.Okay so he is going to spell out Abigail - that’s cute. But no, he went on to C, then D, etc, all the way through to Z. I have no idea what he came up with for Z because everyone on my table was asleep and/or drooling by then. He spoke for 25 minutes, which is the longest father-of-the-bride speech I have ever had the misfortune to witness. But it’s not the length of the speech that was the obnoxious thing. Or the gushing sentimentality of it.For ‘C’ this woman’s father said, “I love my daughter Abigail with a C because she is Clever.” Lovely! Right? No!He wasn’t proud of her cleverness because she had a very good degree from one of the two best British universities. No! She was clever because she had snagged a rich Jewish husband, who worked in finance and had a trust fund. The father-of-the-bride looked so proud of her and he clearly didn’t have a clue he had pissed off the Jewish half of the room, with this massively antisemitic trope.Even now many many years later, the groom’s mum and her friends still talks about that speech and how tacky it was.
