Originally answered May 10th 2020.Oh boy, so like last time when we compared the Mughals against the Vijayanagar empire, today we will compare the ambitious Khilji dynasty against the legendary Cholas.The Chola flagFlag of delhi sultanatStarting with the Khilji dynasty, it was a super power in the Northern region of India and held control from Rajasthan till lower region of Maharashtra.Allauddin khiljiThey were riders primarily and focused on cavalry warfare which was all the rage in the North.A Cavalry chargeWith their Mamluks cavalry they would pillage and plunder the surrounding kingdoms and annex them under their control.This is how fast they could be.With their turban and Mail armor, they were not to be messed with.According to Ferishta, Khilji at his zenith could command and army of well over 400,000 which is a HUGE number.But according to modern historians it's grossly exaggerated. Because Ferishta wrote it after three centuries if Khilji's death.A better estimate would be when fighting against the Mongols he brought forth over 80,000 riders.Dust storms arrive due to the Cavalry warfare.80000 riders riding together will churn the land beneath them to dust.It will shake the earth as they approach.Which is again very imposing number.And yet, against the Cholas, it's a drop in the bucket.Here's the thing, according to a Song Dynasty beurocrate named Chau ju kua, ( and he is a beurocrate, their job is to write exact report) in 1227 the Cholas had literally over 2 million men under their command.The great Cholas2 GODDAMNED MILLION MEN!along with that they had upto sixty thousand elephants!The elephant corps.And I haven't even brought their Naval power yet for which they were so famous for.A Chola war vessel. Pirates of the Carribean have nothing on the Cholas.And what about their use of Catapults? They used to throw boiling cauldron of oil at their enemies.Along with that their combined army with the allies of Srivijaya and other southeast countries would be Humongous!Even if I say that Chau ju kua is ten times wrong, that would still make them over 200,000 men strong, with more than 6000 elephants and 10000 cavalry under their command.This isn't even a contest.The only way Khilji could win is if he tries to scheme it out, but then again the Cholas were the political juggernaut of the deccan, what makes you think they won't make a joke of him in return?At the end of the day we have two figures, the khilji dynasty which ruled over the delhi sultanat for around 30 years ( 1290–1320)Cholas at their maximum extentAnd on the other hand we have an imperial powerhouse which ruled the large region of deccan under their command for more than 400 years (850–1070–1270)Even in the time span they are way bigger than Khilji.So sorry but this round goes hundred percent to the Cholas.If you wish to read more about history then do read my other answers on the Mughal, Marathas, Rajputs the Vijayanagar empire and so on.Thank you for your time.Notes: Nilakanta Sastri, K.A.
