We had the most narcissistic and arrogant medical consultant (nothing unusual there lol) who always thought he was more skilled, the only person in the unit who had a valid opinion and knew more than us critical care nurses. He was always the same and quite frankly he was despised. He was always abrupt and barked out orders like we were his uneducated slaves.One day on the unit he consumed something and went into anaphylaxis. We could see he was petrified as one would expect. He obviously had no ability to bark out orders like he was accustomed to.We ran a full code on him, medicated and gave full supportive therapy and managed his anaphylaxis. The anaphylaxis was reversed.After that event he changed his tune towards us nurses. He got a wake up call by finding out that we actually know something.His life was saved by our decisions and care and possibly could be thanking his lucky stars that we didn’t ‘accidentally’ forget our knowledge and skills.

Once when I was in a restaurant I ordered a sandwich and asked to have everything dairy removed as I have a dairy allergy. This was for a beef and pickle sandwich, and I had been informed the only dairy thing on it was the butter. I mentioned taking everything dairy off because some side salad dressings had been a problem in the past. My sandwich comes out and I take peek before I take a bite, and there's butter on it. I called the waitress and tell her there's butter on the sandwich. She kind of shrugs at me, says I could scrape it off if there's too much. I tell her again I have a dairy allergy and I can't eat this, could I have another without the butter. A few minutes later she brings back the same sandwich with the butter scraped off. I again send it back with the explanation I can't eat it as I have a dairy allergy that can give me anaphylaxis. The sandwich is taken back and both the manager and the chef come out asking why I'm harassing the waitress. I explain from the beginning what happened, with my piriton and epipen on the table as just handling the sandwich had caused me a minor reaction. The waitress is called over and asked why she hadn't noted my allergy down like she was supposed to. She started getting angry saying why should she when I was obviously faking it and making it up. The chef was furious, and asked the manager to fire her as she had deliberately put my life in danger. The manager dismissed her there and then, they both apologised to me, and the chef remade my food and made me an off the menu, dairy and cost free pudding as an apology.

My son has anaphylaxis inducing food allergies. The kind of food allergies where we had benadryl and epi pens in the nurses office and his backpack. In order to prevent an exposure I carefully packed his lunch every day. He had some money on his school lunch account so that on Fridays when they offered icy pops he could get one. Other than that, no birthday celebrations snacks, no school holiday celebrations, etc were allowed. The nursing staff knew, the teachers knew, even the principal knew this.Apparently the stinking lunch aide didn’t know and didn’t care. One day my 7 year old son forgot to grab his lunch kit before heading to lunch. He told the lunch aide but she refused to let him go back for it. He begged but she instead marched him to the hot lunch line and made him buy his lunch. He came home covered in a rash, beet red and with severe stomach issues that kept him out of school for 5 days. When I asked him he told me what had happened. Fortunately he ate something off the minor allergy list so not an anaphylactic reaction.I called every person I could think of and demanded answers. I went to school and demanded to talk to the lunch staff supervisor. That woman was re-trained and put on probation. I wish they had fired her but she claimed she had no knowledge about allergies and was just doing her job. Oh, and she avoided my son completely the whole rest of the year.
