PDF Editor FAQ

What was your IIT-JEE preparation story?

This will be long but I will try my best to make it worth reading. Every JEE story has its own ups and downs. Here goes my story,BACKGROUNDI was decent in studies in my school till the 10th standard. In 10th, I joined a renowned coaching institute in my city for NTSE preparation and also as an kick-start for the JEE.Cleared the first level of NTSE held in Nov 2016 (my marks were the same as the cutoff so barely scraped it).APRIL 201611th had started. Was in the top batch at my institute at that time. The first few weeks I was genuinely studious. I remember that I used to sit in a table and chair for 2.5 hours straight with no distractions beside. This helped me in the initial chapters such as Basic Mathematics and Atomic Structure. The first few weeks, every aspirant aspires to be AIR-1. I also had to prepare for NTSE Stage 2 so was juggling between that and JEE but gave more focus to JEE. But the major thing was the introduction of TV Series at this time. I remember I watched the first season of TVF Pitchers in a day itself. Also started Suits during this time but was cautious not to get addicted to it( used to watch 2–3 episodes a day).MAY 2016A little background about my family. I have an elder brother who passed out from one of the best institutes in India. Considering that, there was a little pressure to do good. Now my Dad was suffering from blood cancer. He had high WBC Counts since 1.5 years but conditions started to get bad from April. I was unaware of what it was at that time. My mom and my Dad did their best to not involve me in that so as to not disturb my studies. Initially I also thought it would get better so did not ask much questions about it. Gave NTSE Stage 2 exams. I still remember before the exam, he sent me a text saying “You’ll do good! “. It did not went good as the MAT section required a lot of speed. But the CBSE result compensated. 10 CGPA.JUNE-JULY 2016I was doing okay at the coaching. In the first major test, I came 29th in about 120 students. I was paying more attention to chemistry and math. Mechanics was not my thing, I felt. Hence was giving the least time to it which in hindsight was a bad decision. I was a school+coaching student so also had to manage school studies. I had taken Computer Science as my fifth subject so had to devote some time to it also. Meanwhile dad’s health deteriorated further. Still they made sure not to disturb me anytime.AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 2016Rotational Mechanics! This was the thing which haunted me to the core. But the conic sections made it easier to score in a cumulative test. The Chemistry was also good during this time. I found chapters like Thermodynamics, Equilibrium and P block to be lite. Basically I was better at remembering stuff and formulas. That is the reason why I liked conics too. Reading on quora was a big motivation always for me. I used to spend my time reading on Quora when I used to eat. Answers by Aman Goel were amazing for inspiration and one could always find the urge to get into IITs from them.Meanwhile I got to know that Dad had to go a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) as his weight was decreasing very fast. My uncle, my mom and my brother traveled to different parts of the country for appointments at the hospitals. They lived for a week in Mumbai while I lived alone with my grandparents. A stem donor was required for which they inquired in different donor sites around the world. They decided to get the BMT done in London and I or my uncle would be the probable donors as the donor sites did not get a match.OCTOBER 2016October 2- They left for London. I cried that day. I never recall crying like that ever. My aunt had come to live with me and my grandparents. That was the month in which I studied the most with full dedication. I did Rotational from HCV two times. I practiced all the physical chemistry chapters of 11th from N. Awasthi and used S.K Goyal for Coordinate Geometry. Meanwhile I also started to solve coaching material in school sitting on the back benches. Got a decent rank in the country wide test. That I can say was my most productive month in terms of studying. It was not all time studying though. I started to see stand ups and other TV Series to cheer myself. I used to study on the bed with a small table as I was never comfortable on desk and chair. Mechanics was still my weakest point but I tried my best by doing HCV and DC Pandey. I would get calls from Mom and Dad every day asking about my studies. Dad had started chemotherapy. Whenever I used to ask him about his health, he used to say that he is perfectly fine and will be back soon. Never had I seen him complain about anything.November 2016November 3- I got a call from my brother at 3 am in the night saying that the condition is very serious. Dad had been shifted to the ICU and was on oxygen mask. That was the night I could hardly sleep. I am not more of a religious person but on such occasions your instincts tell you to pray.November 4- I still remember that I was practicing Hyperbola on that morning. I did the coaching module and sums from SK Goyal. Went to the class in the evening. During the break, I received a call from my brother. He calmly told me that my Dad was very serious and may not live longer. I was literally shattered. I came back home but had to control the tears as I could not tell my grandparents at that time. I was to live with the truth for an entire night. Since this answer is on JEE preparation I would not delve into more details. For a week after that, I did not open any book. Also I didn’t appear for KVPY which was to be held on 6th. I started going to regularly from 15th November. I could not give the major test in the coaching as the funeral was on the same day so I had to give it with the other batch. Initially I found it hard to study but later realized that this was the one thing I could do to make my dad proud. My mother was immensely supportive. She stayed awake with me late nights only for the reason that I could talk to someone. My family, particularly my brother and mother were my greatest source of inspiration along with my dad at that time.December 2016Things started to get back on track. I could not focus more on book study so joined an online test taking platform for JEE. I gained momentum during that time and did well in the test(came 2nd in the batch). My brother told me to focus more on Mains which was perfectly right as I never considered myself as Advanced material. I could do typical sums which required lots of practice but could not think like an Advanced guy would. So I started giving more importance to practicing and doing sums within a time limit.January-February 2017Hoped for a better year than the last one! Organic had started and I liked it from the beginning. IUPAC was lit! I used both MS Chauhan and Himanshu Pandey. Physics and Math too were interesting during this period. Thermo and Waves were just formula based and Math had Permutation and Binomial along with Solutions of Triangles and Inverse Trigonometric Functions. Practice was the thing which was needed in all the chapters mentioned above. My school friends were also very great and helped me recover fast from that period. In the starting months of preparation, I used to think going to school would be a waste of time. But I don’t think I would have achieved anything that I have if not for my school teachers and friends. Class 11th exams were in the corner. I took those litely and studied in the breaks between the exams. Scored around 78% in Class 11 overall. I was satisfied as I knew that I didn’t focused on those.March-April 2017The last major test of Class 11th was in March. I was 17th in around 120 students (okayyish). I made a strong resolution to study whatever is taught in Class 12th rigorously and methodically. No more backlogs! And I also planned on how I will cover some of my 11th backlogs in the month of April. Again it was not full studies. I saw many more TV series. Sherlock, all the series of TVF but was too careful to not get addicted to it.May-June 2017May, being vacation time was an ideal time to cover your backlogs and revise the portions of Class 11th. I avoided Mechanics here also ( again big mistake) and instead mastered the topics in which I was already good. Gave more attention to Chemistry and Math. Gave more tests online as Advanced was going to be online from the next year. Also I had thought of giving Mains online too as it would give me more one week to prepare plus I would have seen the offline paper. Also no OMR errors could occur. June went in studying the initial Organic chapters. Again as I liked Organic, I focused more on it. Calculus and Electricity were also interesting. I followed the DC Pandey series for Physics as it had more objective type of questions. That would definitely be useful in Mains and BITSAT. I used the SK Goyal series for Math for the same reasons. I also started focusing more on NCERT textbooks especially for Chemistry as I had read on Quora that Mains chemistry can be cracked by NCERT. (Plus board exams are there for which you had to study to satisfy your relatives).July-August 2017I came last in my batch during the tests. Was very depressed after that but did not stop studying. It was just that before this I used to study with an aim of becoming an IITian but after this I used to study just like that. I did not have any solid aim but aimed IIIT-H CS after some time as that was one of the best colleges through JEE Mains. Everything was okay at home. The atmosphere was not perfect to study but manageable. My grandparents were patients of depression and were taking medicines from a psychiatrist since a few years. The death of my father further affected them. My mom would go the dad’s office during the afternoon. I would mostly stay upstairs and study but constantly talked with them also which made both of us feel good. My brother was in Hyderabad as he had a job over there. School was one of the things which helped me lot during such times. Another thing which motivated me was Quora. I thought it would be very nice if I somehow could tell my story if I get into one of the prestigious institutes. This motivated me a lot.September-October 2017The last phase of chapters started. Physics was again a mix of Optics( something which can be mastered by practice) and Modern Physics( my favorite part in physics). Chemistry was mainly Inorganic which was again rote learning which I was good at. Math had Probability, Three Dimensional Geometry, Vectors and others which also required a lot of practice. Once the syllabus the only thing I did was solve papers. Once you know all the theories, it just becomes boring to revise them but it is also very important to do so. I gave Class 11th JEE Mains Pattern papers online in which I scored in the range of 180–220. After each test, I would analyze the mistakes that I made and would never work upon them( again a big mistake). Did the previous years questions from each chapter which helps a lot. September also went in the preparation of 1st term school examinations. I did not take them lightly this time but still scored average marks. In math paper, until then I had never scored more than 80. I knew the concepts but did not know how to present them properly. Computer Science also took a lot of time.November-December 2017The KVPY exam was held just the day after 4th November. It went okay but was by first experience of an exam and more importantly an online exam. Back in the last major test, I came 8th and was quite happy. I also appeared in one of the AITS and got a rank of around 2k in both Mains and Advanced. It had mostly questions related to Advance level and since my primary aim was Mains, I stopped appearing for it. Revision had started in our coaching. I also followed my own timetable where I had allotted different chapters of each subject on each day. I made sure to do each subject everyday and not just one subject the whole day. We also had our first preboards. Performed decently in that but still my math marks were not improving. In between all of these, I also started giving full length tests online. Initially my scores were in the range of 180–190 but during the end, they increased to around 210–220. IIIT-H was far away but I was still believing of getting a good NIT.January-February-March 2018From around the 2nd week of January I shifted my focus to Boards. After my 2nd preboards I went to a teacher to give Math tests(both chapter wise and full length). This practice improved my Math to a large extent. I also went to school to give some papers and to relive the last moments of school life. Practicals were also conducted around that time. All of them went very good. In February, I started giving offline papers of other institutes which a friend of mine had given me. In those too, I used to score between 180–230, with the highest being 260 in a relatively easy paper. This boosted my confidence which is always essential in JEE prep. Also I made sure to give online tests as well in a confined time frame which made me more prone to sitting in front of a computer screen for longer time. Chapter wise revision was done once so I emphasized more on giving tests which I feel was a good decision. I also ordered BITSAT by Arihant as that was considered the best book for BITSAT. I planned that I would do each chapter from both Board point of view and then solve questions from Arihant. With March, Boards came. All of the papers went good.(Math went exceedingly well). The last paper Computer Science finished on 23rd which gave me 3 weeks for Mains. Between the exams, I completely stopped JEE prep. I did the remaining chapters of class 11th from Arihant BITSAT in the last week of March. I practiced very hard during these last days thinking of the upcoming days ahead when I could binge watch shows.April 2018Two days before the offline paper, my grandmother was admitted in the ICU. She suffers from anxiety problems since years and we had changed the medicines of the psychiatrist. My brother and aunt rushed to take care of everything so I would not get affected. On the 8th evening, I gave the offline paper in my room in exam simulated environment. This time, the paper was comparatively difficult than that of the last year. Usually the chemistry section is scoring but this time they made it hard which had an effect on the scores. I was scoring around 200 in the paper. But that was in the home environment. Believe me there is a lot of difference between giving an exam in the center and at home. On asking a couple of my friends, the paper was really difficult. A friend of mine who was really good calculated his marks to be around 210. Seeing this, I was nervous. Plus the situation at home added to it. Gave VITEEE on someday between. Was pretty easy but time constraints could be felt. Also I felt the math part was slightly trickier.15th April- My paper was to be held in the afternoon slot from 2 pm. People say it is tough to get a good sleep on the previous night but I didn’t feel anything like that. Had a good breakfast and did some light revision of Biomolecules and Polymers in the morning. Suddenly a thought enters that what if you don’t qualify? These kinds of thoughts literally give you chills. Somehow I listened to songs to take my mind off. Took blessings of my family and specially looked at the photo of my father before leaving. At the center, I had a couple of friends giving the exam with me so chilled out with them. The pre-exam mentality also affects a lot. The batch which came out said the paper was similar to offline one with chemistry being comparatively easy and math being a bit lengthier. With this thought in mind, I went into the exam hall making a strategy to maximize the number of attempts. I did all the papers in the order CMP and stuck with this. So overall the paper was comparable to offline one. I felt physics was a bit harder but chemistry was easier than offline. I attempted of around 270 marks but made quite a few educated guesses. On coming out of the exam hall, I was not fully satisfied with my performance. We went to a coffee shop to relax. I told my mom and brother that I would be getting around 180. They said that was more than good and kept encouraging me for other exams. I started aiming for BITSAT.So that day I watched Suits as I had a couple of exams in that week, so took one day off. I gave UGEE ( for IIIT-H ) which definitely went better than Mains. The paper was really amazing to solve. After that I appeared for MUOET and scored 153 in it. I had read about it on Quora and guessed that this much would be sufficient for admission in Manipal CSE. But the fact which made me confident was that one guy who was scoring around 270 in Mains scored 164 in this. This led me to think that maybe I had a bad day and could do better in further exams. After that I appeared for our state entrance exam (GUJCET). It went amazing and the fun part was that my physics went the best of the three subjects. On checking with the answer key, I was scoring around 95/120. But through GUJCET I was interested in going to DAIICT only if I could get that but that seemed nearly impossible. By then the official answer key of Mains had also come. I calculated my score to be around 146. I was very sad as I did not ever think of getting such a score.VIT :Got around 6.3kMains:Marks: 146Rank: 20k (rank was not too bad according to the score)May 2018Throughout the month, I was focusing only on BITSAT. Read a lot of answers about people who could not do well in Mains but had aced BITSAT. And the fact that I had a decent enough backup did not pressurize me. My BITSAT was scheduled on 17th May. I started giving lots of tests. In the Arihant ones, I scored around 280–290 in each one of them and in the online platform I used to score around 300–310. I also gave tests on MyPat and scored around 250–260 in them. Considering that it was difficult, I was okay with that much score. Meanwhile my mom was adamant on securing an admission so we went for the VIT counselling in which I got a seat in IT. This wasted my 2 days during the key BITSAT prep period but that was okay.Meanwhile Manipal rank came- 949 (was happy)17th May- I was fully prepared and confident for the paper. I had planned on attempting the bonus questions. Started off with Chemistry and it was a breeze. Moved onto Math which was also very easy. Confidence was increasing within. Then did English and LR. Finally came to the weak link- Physics. Not too good in that. I had around 10 minutes left after completing all the questions so went for bonus questions. Math and Chemistry ones were easy and I was sure of them but Physics ones were slightly tricky. I attempted 11/12. Before pressing the submit button, I took a deep breath and hoped for anything above 300. And then the screen flashed311.I was elated. I knew it is not too much but considering the options I had, it probably was good. (After moderation of marks it became 315).I literally studied nothing during the next 2 days. I watched a couple of movies. Since Advance was not my aim, I was pretty chilled out.20th May- This is also an interesting story. On the morning of Advance, the driver didn’t show up. So I requested my neighbor to drop me to my center which was around an hour away. I left the home at 7:40 but thanks to uncle I reached by 8:30. This was the time I missed my Dad a lot. His pre exam talks on how to not be stressed whatever happened always helped me a lot.Paper 1 went bad. I was juggling across questions not trying to solve any. The numerical type ones were also really tricky and time-taking. Again tried to attempt the maximum( which again was a bad idea).Paper 2 was comparatively good. Honestly, was just waiting for it to be over.Did not do great. Missed qualification by 1 mark. But I am still quite happy.I have joined BITS Pilani- Pilani Campus in a dual degree course. Writing it from my hostel here. And on an additional note, I would request all of you to be a part of stem cell registry so that many more lives can be saved.Thank you for reading it till the end!EDIT: Thank you all for your upvotes. Really overwhelmed by the comments and I hoped I tried my best to motivate you for JEE.
