PDF Editor FAQ

How bad it is if you don't write your final evaluation at the end of your Google internship? If you successfully deliver your project, is it common to receive a need improvement grade only because of this?

in short, it’s pretty bad.Your final self evaluation is literally the “why you should hire me” document. If you successfully “deliver” your project after 3+ months of hard work, why would you skimp on the 2 hours to write that final evaluation? It doesn’t shine a favourable light on you.Delivering a project is more than just submitting a bunch of working code at the end of your internship. A successful delivery of a project includes not only code, but also testing, rollout to production, training, documentation, and, who would have guessed, informing your manager about what you did, by writing that self evaluation. The final rating depends on many factors, including feedback from people you worked with, your design docs, and code you wrote. The primary use of your self evaluation is to tell your manager what to look at and whom to ask.But to answer your question: no, it is not common to give a “needs improvement” only because you didn’t write your final evaluation, but I suspect there is a strong correlation between interns who don’t write the final evaluation and interns who got “needs improvement”. After all, someone who couldn’t be bothered to write the final evaluation most likely also skipped other things that were important…

Can I do my GSoC internship along with my regular internship?

Okay, let me first give a straightforward answer to the question : Yes, you definitely can! And now let us talk about the "How to?" part.I feel entitled to answer this question because I have been in exactly the same situation (as the question describes) this year. I am a part of GSoC 2014 and am working with the organization Mlpack and I have recently completed my summer internship at Intuit (company), Bangalore.Coming to the point, it is not an easy task to get involved in both simultaneously and be able to devote quality time to both! The best piece of advice that I will give is to do a self evaluation before applying for GSoC. What I mean is, know your management capabilities and willingness to work hard first! Being a part of GSoC alongside with another internship is more or less about these two. I completely agree with Sushant when he says that your internship might not allow you to devote enough time to GSoC, sometimes. But, if you can still manage well, you are good to go! When I say "manage well", I mean the following:Never try doing both together! : Sometimes you might want to have a foot in each of the boats. Never do that! While on a boat, stay on it and work hard! If you are working for GSoC, never worry about the intern and vice versa. And believe me, if you practice this and keep calm, you will never have to worry.Keep the weekend for GSoC : Sounds hard? If you enjoy the work you are doing, this will never be hard. It was never hard for me! While in Bangalore, I spent most of weekends working for GSoC. Yes, I roamed around on one or two weekends but not on all. Sometimes, you might not be able to work on your GSoC project during the weekdays. You can clear most of the backlog, if you utilize your weekends well!Keep talking to your mentor : Your mentor is there to help you and most of those guys are cooperative and extremely friendly. If you are stuck somewhere, let your mentor know. He will work with you and get you out of it. If you feel that you will not be able to work much during any week, tell him the reason and he will understand. Keeping my mentor informed about everything helped me a lot! (Don't start "not devoting" enough time every week. In that case, even the mentor can't help!)Devote enough time on weekdays too! : Do not always rely on the weekend! I used to come back from my office, take some rest and then I used to work on my GSoC project for atleast 2-3 hours (~15 hours during the weekdays). This will always keep you up and happy! :)Work hard and never give in! : If you are working hard, you are automatically managing your time! Once you have decided to do it, never even think of giving in. Just keep going and you will find the light at the end of the tunnel! :)Apart from the above tricks, as Sushant has mentioned, it is always better to start early rather than starting late. Doing so will help you understand the requirements of the project well ahead of time and then you can make a better decision on whether or not to go for GSoC (or your internship).Inspite of all difficulties and decisions to make, I will suggest you to participate in GSoC atleast once, not necessarily with your internship. It is a great learning experience and undoubtedly a great addition to your skills! I wish you a great life ahead!

Why do recruiters have unrealistic expectations even from candidates applying to entry level positions?

The recruiters are weighing candidates knowledge based on institutes they are graduating. Their CTC also have vast difference for premier institutes and normal institutes graduates. As private companies are recruiting more candidates than Govt companies, their expectation level is quite different. If you are graduating from normal colleges , then you are stuck in training and internships while doing graduation. The frequency is mismatched. The recruiters who are recruiting fresh graduates know the difference , but they wanted you to perform high although they pay you less. They are weighing candidates not on knowledge but based on institutes you are graduating. To plug such loop holes,it is better to develop your skills based on your self evaluation and then get those training to balance to some extend.Hope it helps.
