Go to Railway station or nationalised banks in Karnataka. Most employees speak Hindi with customers. The forms are also in complicated Hindi or English. I have not seen a single Kannadiga filling the forms in Hindi. Why they are not in three languages,since Karnataka adopted three language formula?Is it a plot to force Hindi every where?So some Kannada hyperproud people are registering their protests in this way.However if it violates the law of the land it is condemnable.

Well, yes and no!I can speak colloquial Tamil with a strong and clearly evident Malayalam accent. This Paalakaad Tamil, is my mother tongue. I can try and conceal the accent with some effort but I manage to deceive no one, least of all the real Tamilians. They see through my Tamil quite easily and soon, I am no longer ‘one of them’ but a Malayalee outsider.The Malayalees don’t consider me as one of their own, either. So I end up hanging between two stools.I can read Tamil, write in Tamil and type in Tamil.All three are done slowly, and haltingly.I can’t read long text, continuously like I do in English and Hindi.I can easily read the headlines of newspapers, posters, advertisement bill boards, but I can’t read books and neither can I fill up forms in Tamil in the Government or municipal offices.I can enjoy Tamil films and TV soaps. I enjoyed Tamil drama during my boyhood when TV did not exist.What goes over my head is pure academic Tamil spoken by pandits and scholars and speeches of fiery orators like Karunanidhi.So I would say, I know and yet don’t know Tamil.GV
