PDF Editor FAQ

What is the strangest case you've had as a lawyer?

The strangest case I was ever presented involved alleged fraud by a realtor. One of my “friends” referred a young couple who had just purchased their first home. They wanted a lawyer to sue their realtor for fraud. I do have standards (no matter how minimal) and, even though they were willing to pay an hourly rate, I wasn’t going to file a lawsuit without knowing some facts. They claimed the realtor lied about the neighborhood - it was “trashy” and “smelly” and they had no idea what they were getting because this had all been concealed from them. It was obvious they were very upset, but I couldn’t get much in the way of actual facts from them so I arranged a visit to see what they were talking about. It took me almost an hour to get there (in non-rush hour traffic) and, by that time, civilization was in my rear view mirror. When I finally arrived I realized these people were delusional and my “friend” owed me a bottle of something very expensive.Anyway, the neighborhood was “trashy” because it was directly across the street from a 50 ACRE LANDFILL. The only thing between their house and acres of diaper-strewn real estate was a chain-link fence. I asked the logical question - how did you miss it? They claimed the realtor “distracted” them while they were looking at the house and it was “hidden” by the fence.I didn’t bother to ask how a 6 foot-tall see-though fence managed to hide 20 foot-tall piles of trash and 12 bulldozers making enough noise to raise the dead. They were firmly convinced that this was all a conspiracy and they were the victims.I stupidly assumed the landfill was also the source of their claim the house “smelled bad” so I started making my exit. They insisted I see the backyard and, since my day was already shot, I said “sure.” The wind shifted as we rounded the corner and there was an eye-watering stench (it made the landfill odor seem enticing). Then I saw - over the back fence - a PIG FARM. Not a small yard where the neighbors kept a couple little oinkers but a HUGE pasture (another 50 acres or so) with a massive shed and hundreds of swine running around.I don’t know why but I just had to ask, again - how did you miss this? Apparently, the pigs were HIDDEN when they saw the house, and the realtor said the pasture was for a few horses living in the shed. Now the pig farmer was conspiring with the realtor to keep 1,000 pigs under wraps long enough for her to unload this property. As I’m getting ready to sprint to my car they finally asked me when I could get their lawsuit filed and how much I needed for a retainer. They were (or seemed to be) sincerely hurt when I turned them down. Sometimes, there just isn’t enough money in the world.NOTE: I’ve updated my answer because a fellow Quoran correctly pointed out that 5 acres wasn’t nearly enough to run a landfill with 12 bulldozers and a pig farm with 1000 pigs. Thanks!

What's the source of the "House of 1,000 Mirrors" story?

it was the whitehouse when the clintons were there, she woke up in the morning and walked to the big mirror in the hall and said.mirror mirror on the wall , whos the fairest of them all .a big cracking sound and falling glass .she would scream to the secret service to install another.128 thousand was spent on mirrors but she never got the message she desired..

As a lawyer, what’s the scariest case you’ve seen in court?

I’ve been litigating commercial disputes for 30+ years, so my definition of what constitutes a “horrifying case” may be different than yours. What I’m about to describe is “horrifying” in its stupidity.A “friend” gave my name to a young couple who wanted to sue their realtor for fraud. I do have standards (no matter how minimal) and I don’t file lawsuits “on request” based on people’s willingness to pay my hourly rate. Facts matter.I met with them and they seemed like a nice, normal couple. Sometimes people are so upset they can’t really describe things, and I thought that might be the problem here. They talked about the neighborhood and their property being “trashy” and “smelly.” According to them, the realtor had lied about some things and concealed others. The end result being that they’d purchased a house not knowing all the facts. It was all a little vague and I couldn’t get much more in the way of actual, hard facts. The only solution for me was to go out there and have them show me what they were talking about. It took me almost an hour to get there (in non-rush hour traffic) and, by that time, civilization was in my rear view mirror. When I finally arrived, I realized these people were delusional and my “friend” owed me a bottle of something very expensive. The neighborhood was “trashy” because it was directly across the street from a 50 ACRE LANDFILL. The only thing between their house and acres of diaper-strewn real estate was a chain-link fence. I asked the logical question - how did you miss it? They claimed the realtor “distracted” them while they were looking at the house and it was “hidden” by the fence. With 12 bulldozers pushing stuff around less than 50 yards away, I didn’t bother to ask what could possibly have distracted them so much they’d missed them. Talking over all the noise was difficult. It seemed equally pointless to ask how 20-foot tall piles of trash were “hidden” from them by a 6-foot tall, see-through fence. Nope, they were firmly convinced that this was all a conspiracy and they were the victims.I stupidly assumed the landfill was also the source of their claim the house “smelled bad” so I started making my exit. They insisted I see the backyard. Since my day was already shot, I said “sure.” The wind shifted as we rounded the corner and there was a truly eye-watering stench (it made the landfill odor seem enticing). Apparently, the pigs were IN HIDING when they toured the house. The realtor said the pasture was for a few horses living in the shed. Now the pig farmer was conspiring with the realtor to keep 1,000 pigs under wraps long enough for her to unload this property. As I’m getting ready to sprint to my car they asked me how long it would take for me to get their lawsuit filed and how much I needed for a retainer. They were (or seemed to be) sincerely hurt when I turned them down. Sometimes, there just isn’t enough money in the world. It’s horrifying to think someone might actually have taken this “case.”
