What is your review of University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign?
It’s awesome! (Super biased answer coming.)First of all, great CS program. Whenever someone in Silicon Valley asks me “What school did you go to?” Their next sentence is usually “Wow there’s a lot of you guys out here aren’t there”. That has to be a good sign. The professors are awesome. My personal favorites include: basically everyone who taught me in a CS class.UIUC has good degree programs in Physics, Civil Engineering, etc and the college of Business also has a great deal of respect, too.So, great education, check! (Assuming you’re interested in engineering or business)What about non-class related aspects of the University?Well it’s pretty.Has some decent, ‘college’ food. There’s Insomnia cookies where I basically met my GF of 3+ years, great deep dish pizza from Papa Dels, great bbq from Black Dog, freaky fast sandwiches from Jimmy Johns which was started on the campus, and it’s getting a Portillos in a few months. Plus a bunch of fast food places all along Green St.It’s got a bunch of frats to party at when you’re a freshman and cheap bars to go to all along Green St for when you’ve turned 19. In March there’s Unofficial St. Patricks day which will allow you to see how crazy a campus can really get with an influx of visitors and booze all around. I mean UIUC was voted best party school my Sophomore year (University Of Illinois Crowned Top Party School By Princeton Review). It’s got interesting surroundings that might be a bit sketch including areas where the streets are still just cobblestone. Two movie theaters and a mall. And quite a few urban legends and urban explorer-ish places to learn about and sneak into late at night (I’ve heard… I totally didn’t sneak into any buildings, onto any rooftops, or try to find any graves in the chemistry building). It’s also got great seasons. In august, it’s hot and sweaty. People are excited, spread out on the quad and constantly partying. In the fall the leaves are beautiful, the campus has settled into a rhythm. The winter paints the campus in sheets of white and different snow structures will pop up on the quad. And the spring lets you see the trees spring into shades of white and pink. The spring is the perfect time to go kiss your partner under the Eternal flame. It’s got massive libraries (About the Main Stacks) and gyms (the ARC and CRCE).I know, I’m biased and that other schools probably can claim everything I just did about UIUC, but I had an amazing time attending UIUC. I met great people, partied, learned a ton, and enjoyed everything about it (even the demoralizing difficulty of some of the classes). I got to leave with a job at Google and a relationship with the beautiful woman that may very well be my wife sometime in the future. Maybe I just lucked out, but I’d recommend it to anyone I met.
