One sunny Sunday morning, around 10:30, I was headed south on US Hwy 31. It was a perfectly normal day, and absolutely nothing interesting was happening. A single, oncoming car was doing just a few miles per hour over the speed limit, and since there was nothing much going on, I decided to turn around on him and see if his vehicle tags were current. Well, they weren’t, and were actually showing to have been expired for 2 years. Further, the first 2 digits of the license plate showed that the car had been registered in a county that’s at the other end of our state. As any police officer would be, I was curious as to why a car with expired plates would be headed north from a county 200 miles away, and on a 4 lane highway that ran parallel to an interstate.So, here we go. I pulled the car over and approached the driver. Upon asking for his license and registration, he told me that the car was a loaner and that he left his license at the house of person he borrowed the car from. I asked for his name, date of birth, and social security number (that was standard at the time). He answered with (we’ll use generic info) “James E. Smith, January 1, 1960, 987–56-xxxx″, which I wrote down. I asked a few more questions to kill a couple of minutes, then I asked him for his name, date of birth, and social security number again. As expected, he couldn’t tell me the same information that he told me the first time I asked, so I knew he was avoiding being identified. (So if you are going to lie, make sure you can tell the same lie at least twice.)At that time, I removed him from the car, placed him in handcuffs, and put him in the back seat of my patrol car. Temporarily detained, I returned to his car and immediately noticed a wallet that was tucked down between the seat and console. I opened the wallet, and surprise, found a driver’s license with the same guy’s photo on it. I called in to the dispatcher to check the status of the car and driver (whose name was completely different from the one he told me). The dispatcher, rather quickly, came back to me on the radio with “that” tone in her voice. “S.O to L-18, the US Marshals hold 10–29s on that subject for possession of stolen explosives.” (see below). Immediately, the Chief Deputy came over the radio (from his home) and told me to use extreme caution, and assure that he had no weapons on his person. I called a wrecker to have the car towed, and took the driver to jail.To shorten a story that could quickly get very long, just due to a simple traffic stop, I apprehended a suspect that the US Marshals had been looking for for some time, and I wouldn’t even have stopped him if the tag hadn’t been expired. As a police officer, you literally never know who you will encounter on any given day, nor what risks the encounter will entail.”S.O.” is radio shorthand for “Sheriff’s Office”.”L-18″ is radio shorthand for me, the officer.“10–29” is radio shorthand for an arrest warrant. I have a terrible memory.I can’t remember names, dates and numbers, even if I mug them up whole night.However, it is also a fact that I have got into IIT and also in IRS in my first attempt itself.This has happened because I refused to consider my memory as my weakness.I accept poor memory as part of my brain hardware design by nature and focused on the things where I am strong.Since my memory is weak, I focus on concepts.I use following techniques to compensate my weakness of memory.If it is really too important, I write important dates, numbers and names in my notes and revise them regularly every week till I get fair grasp of them.If I am not sure of the exact number, I use approximates. For example, instead of writing ‘67% of … do this’, I write ‘most people do this’.I avoided the questions in civil services which required precise data. I preferred those which required descriptive answers and needed imagination.I used to pick the questions in examinations where the answers are already known e.g. derivations and proving questions in science and maths.Memory is just one of the skills for civil services.You can do well if you have better concepts, have wider knowledge base and possess imagination to write creative answers.If you think that poor memory is a weakness, remind yourself of Albert Einstein who is considered to be genius despite having a terrible memory.Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, Einstein reached in his vest pocket. He couldn’t find his ticket, so he reached in his trouser pockets. It wasn’t there, so he looked in his briefcase but couldn’t find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn’t find it.The conductor said, ‘Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I’m sure you bought a ticket. Don’t worry about it.’Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket.The conductor rushed back and said, ‘Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don’t worry, I know who you are. No problem. You don’t need a ticket. I’m sure you bought one.’Einstein looked at him and said, ‘Young man, I too, know who I am. Aadhar Card is must for JEE Main as of now so if you don’t have it please get one from nearest centre. If you don’t provide Aadhar card you might not be allowed in the exam,so please treat it as a very very serious matter.According to JEE website :All the Indian citizen candidates should possess AADHAAR card issued by UIDAI. At the time of filling application form of JEE (Main)–2017, the candidates will have to enter their AADHAAR number, name, date of birth & gender which will be validated with the UIDAI’s data. In case, these particulars do not match, the candidates will not be able to fill the application form for JEE (Main)–2017. Therefore, the candidates are advised to ensure that their AADHAAR card has correct details of their name, date of birth & gender as per school records. If there is some mismatch in these details, the candidates should immediately get it corrected in AADHAAR data or school records, as the case may be.
