What are the strange strategies used in battlefield which turned to be successful beyond what was pretended?
Beautiful thing about Battle Tactics or War Tactics is that it is never wrong. Innovative strategies have played crucial role in bringing decisive results of battle and in turn changed the final result of war. Let us Read, enlighten ourselves and most importantly enjoy the essence of these strangest battlefield tactics which turned to be successful beyond it was pretended. Let us begin.Babur’s Camouflage tactics. Babur who was willing to conquer Delhi and defeat Lodhi Dynasty. Lodhi’s Dynasty which was highly successful in India in terms of military power, economy and welfare of society was considered to be a difficult Army to defeat. Babur comes in and in battle of Panipat First, he for the first time uses Artillery on Indian Soil. Artillery was not used before by any army on Indian Soil. But this was not the strange tactics. Babur on battlefield camouflaged its artillery canons by constructing a screen wall made up of bamboos, bushes, weed and dried leaves. He did this to maintain surprise element of Artillery and it worked. Lodhi’s Army outnumbered heavily Babur’s Army with infantry, Archers, light cavalry or horse cavalry and elephant cavalry. Babur’s Army would had died in the soil of Panipat but his strange strategy worked. When Babur’s front vanguard was getting dominated by Lodhi’s Army, Babur removed the screen of camouflage and opened up the canons. Lodhi’s soldiers had never seen something like this. They were not able to understand that what was getting pounded over them. There was chaos for survival among Lodhi’s Army. Lodhi’s elephant crushed its own troops. Lodhi came under pressure and he had to come ahead to motivate and lead his troops from front by setting own example. But fate had something else, Babur along with his protection contingent moved ahead and outnumbered Lodhi’s small contingent moving ahead.2. Vietnamese Communist and nationalist’s Army taking their artillery guns on top of mountain. Yes, it happened in the famous battle of Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam where VCN army planned a strategy of taking artillery guns and Anti Aircraft Guns on top of mountain. Anti-Aircraft gun will bring down the French or allied force’s aircraft which will bring reinforcement implying destruction of all kind of communication line making the French Para Battalion lying in isolation and waiting for a decisive DEATH. Those who understand what is artillery gun knows that how difficult it is to take artillery gun over the top of a mountain. French Para Battalion had created attrition among artillery of VCN Army. An artillery gun is vital target in any war. French Para Battalion was carryout raids over gun location and destroying them. VCN army decided to launch an offensive over the French Para Battalion in Dien Bien Phu. French Para Battalion along with allies were stationed inside a fortified location in a valley surrounded by Mountains. These mountains offered a natural defences from Artillery as lot of explosive power was required to create a parabolic path for artillery shells to bombard over their location. Also, it was difficult to accurately fire artillery over French location from the foothills. VCN did what no one can ever imagine. With luxury of immense manpower, VCN during dark hours pushed their artillery guns over the mountains on the reverse slope. This made them to achieve camouflage and concealment of whole logistics operations. VCN directed its infantry formation to launch offensive in waves over French and outnumbering them heavily. The night when the battle started, the French fortification was bombarded heavily by VCN’s artillery gun which took French with surprise. Then VCN infantry’s offensive waves outnumbered the French Para Battalion and they were defeated. Allied Forces were harassed by ill-equipped Vietnamese Army. Dien Bien Phu battle was the decisive battle of Indo-China war which was fought for 9 Years. The allied forces suffered heavy losses and they were defeated by an Army which was using equipments of first world war. This also proved that modernisation will not work till the time you don’t have Chankya’s as your tactical planners.3. The Rajput’s Raid on Amer Fort. Lot of people must not be aware that Amer Fort of Jaipur wasn’t made by Rajputs but it belongs to Meena Dynasty. The King of Meena Dynasty had given shelter to a women who was wife of Prince Sora Singh of Nurmar of Jaipur Dynasty. Prince Sora Singh was killed by his brother in a successful coup to take control of Nurmar as the new Prince. Sora’s Brother had warned all the smaller kingdoms who were allies of Jaipur Kingdom to not to give shelter to Sora’s Wife and child. Wife of Prince Sora Singh, took her infant son in a basket over her head wearing commoner cloths and left Nurmar. She was given shelter by Meena King and her son was given princely education. The Meena king adopted the lady and her son as sister and nephew. The kid was named as Dhola Rai. When her son attained age of 13, Meena King made him ambassador of of Meena Kingdom and sent him to Mougoul Court to represent Meena. In the court, Sora Singh’s Brother was also present and in a social interaction he came to know about existence of Dhola Rai. Sora’s Brother was furious with act of Meena’s to give shelter to Sora’s wife and son. He decided to take over Meena Kingdom by launching a small team raid operation. Meena’s perform a customarily event of ablutions en masse in a pond where all the males keep their weapons outside the pond and enter the pond to pray for their ancestors. It was done at the sunrise. Sora’s Brother planned a raid when the Meena’s will enter the pond without armed. The fateful day came, and Sora’s Brother took egoistic vengeance by launching the raid and turning the colour of pond from blue to red. It was a bloodshed morning and no one was spared. After immense bloodshed in which royal Meena family was killed, the raiders moved towards the Meena town outside Amer Fort and continued killing infants, teenagers and adult irrespective of genders. Few Meena families were able to escape and were forced out of Jaipur. Amer Fort was taken over and became part of Jaipur Kingdom. The Rajput prince also destroyed any documented history related to Meena dynasty. This Rajput Raid in folktales is also called as the bloodiest coward raid. Though, the strange strategy did work for Rajputs to take over the Meena Dynasty. The Pond in front of Amer fort was the death bed for Thousands of Meenas. Though, tactically I considered it as one of the strangest strategy to take over the a whole kingdom. One of the most effective small team operations of all time.4. Tanks Running in Mountains. Can you imagine tanks running in mountains. Even, I cannot imagine this. During 1947–48 Ino-Pak War in Jammu and Kashmir, something unimaginable happened where Indian Army was inducted very late in the War. Pakistan was in process of taking over Ladakh after taking control of Zojila Pass. If India would had lost Ladakh then Kashmir would had become chicken neck and it would be easy for Pakistan Army to break the neck of the chicken. Time was running out and Kargil was in reach of Pakistan Army by now. General Thimaya conceptualised something which was unimaginable. He decided to bring tanks in mountains and give a shocker to Pakistan Army. Highest standards of concealment of logistical operation was maintained and within months the tanks were up on mountain. The D-Day was decided and an armoured led attack with 77 Para Brigade was carried out. The Pakistani were shocked seeing tanks on a mountainous terrain. Pakistani flee the defences leaving capture of Zojila Pass as the cake walk for Indians. Till date NO ARMY in the world has done something like this which defies all the strategical principles. Battle of Zojila[1][1][1][1] is a tactical piece which is taught in all the major armies.5. Indian Army strikes over Lahore. How many of you know that in 1965 - India would had lost Kashmir as well as Punjab to Pakistan. I am sure hardly anyone knows this. Indian Army was losing the war in Kashmir and lost signifiant hold of ground. To counter this, Indian Army decided to open up western front to put pressure on Pakistani Army. Pakistan Army which had modernised war equipments, weapons and ammunition with support of a strong Air Force with modern aircrafts had huge advantage over Indian Army. Indian Army was no match in terms of technology and modernisation to Pakistan Army. The initial results raised question on existence of India. Pakistan Army was causing inside Indian Territory from Asal Uttar to Amritsar. The decision of opening up of western front not only put Indian Army on the back foot but a loss of fertile land of Punjab was becoming inevitable which will eventually cut one communication axis to Kashmir. The Army chief of Indian Army General PN Thapar ordered then Western Army commander Lieutenant General Harbaksh Singh to withdraw the defences behind to utilise the remaining land as the buffer and continue the war which will reduce Indian casualties. This tactical move would had allowed Pakistan to gain Asal Uttar, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Amritsar and few more vital targets. Lieutenant General Harbaksh Singh became frustrated listening to orders and said “Western Army Command will die but will not withdraw and as theatre commander it is my final decision” and disconnected the phone call. Lieutenant General Harbaskh Singh ordered 2 Corps GOC Lieutenant General Gurbaksh Singh to launch an all out attack which will be Armoured led infantry attack. Lieutenant General Harbaskh Singh along with Lieutenant General Gurbaksh Singh in very less time made a theatre level plan for striking deep in Pakistan. It was strange strategy because Indian Army had already lost considerable land, life of soldiers and were running low on ammunition. Rest is history, Armoured Division led by Skinner’s horse Battalion and 17 Poona Horse battalion under command of Lieutenant Colonel AB Tarapore, Param Veer Chakra with Centurion tanks brought down havoc on Pakistani Army. Skinners Horse Centurion Tanks led by squadron commanders reached outskirts of Lahore 8 Kilometre short and heavily threatened Lahore. After 2nd World war till now 1965 war fought on western front of India is the largest tank battle which was fought furiously. Indian Army not only snatched victory from jaws of defeats but also captured various Pakistani towns in Punjab Provenience of Pakistan namely Dograi, Phillora, Changa Manga Forest etc. Indian Army had taken administrative control over these towns even after 1965 war was ended on note of cease fire till the time demilitarisation of captured land was carried out by both the Armies. At end of war Pakistan Army had reportedly captured 295 Km square of area where as Indian Army had captured 1995 Kilometre square of area of Pakistan. Lieutenant General Harbaskh Singh was awarded Padma Bhusan for his exemplary tactical and administrative planning and efforts. His aggressive strategy not only saved Punjab but also Kashmir and India. His strategical move on theatre level forced Pakistan to come on discussion table. Punjab Government had honoured General Harbaksh and General Gurbaksh as the saviour of Punjab.6. Can you Hide Tanks? Now, this is something interesting which actually happened. Indian Army in 1965 war hunted Pakistani tanks. Pakistani Tanks were creating havoc in the initial stage of the war but when General Harbaksh decided “everything or nothing”, it turned into most bloodiest tank battle after 2nd world war till now. The Skinner Horse Battalion wanted to give a shocker to Pakistan Army. In the Kasur sector of Pakistan, there is Changa Managa forest which gives a natural deception to Pakistani Tanks. Pakistan planned to hide their tanks in these forest and hunt Indian Tanks and cause casualty to Indian infantry. But in any war, time is of utmost importance. Skinners Horse battalion’s commanding officer got this innovative idea first as he had very well interpreted the terrain. As soon as the fighting reached Kasur, he ordered half of his squadron to hide in the Changa Manga forest. Next day when the Pakistan Tanks were lured in the killing ground by progressing Indian infantry, the centurion tanks pin pointed the Pakistani Tanks and converted the land of Kasur in the cemetery of Pakistani Tanks.7. Battle of Longewala. In battle of Longewala, the Pakistani troops reached the isolated rifle company led by Major Chandpuri around 1230 am in night. There was cattle fence which was used earlier by BSF to keep camels inside the fence but Pakistani troops confused it as the Mine fence which any army had to put as per Geneva Convention. In the confusion, Pakistan Army stopped its tank almost 200 meters away from Indian Defences. They started mine breaching through grapnel drill which takes lot of time. Here Major Chandpuri did something which probably requires lot of tactical mind and present of mind without losing nerves. In front of 120 men there were 3000 soldiers surrounding the defences; what will be your reaction? Major Chandpuri not only motivated his soldiers to keep calm but also displayed excellent fire control orders as he had understood that Air Force can’t reach before sun light for which 5 hours were left and he did not had enough ammunition to stop 3000 men. Sadhewala, where his battalion had taken up defences was under attack and no reinforcement from brigade was available before first light. Major Chandpuri did not let his men open fire till 0430 am in morning. It was a pitch dark night and if fire is opened then the location of defences and automatic is compromised. Pakistani did fire rounds from 200 metres to know the defensive location but to their utter surprise no rounds were fired. When Pakistani were as short as 80 meters which happened around 0430, Major Chandpuri ordered rifle trench to open fire after which he used automatics to cover up larger extent to kill as many enemy as possible. He kept Pakistani Armoured Brigade engaged for next one hour and at 0530 the Air support was available. This strange tactics worked for Major Chandpuri and Jaisalmer was protected by Longewala Company Commander. He was awarded Mahaveer Chakra for his exemplary leadership, tactical mind, courage and strong nerves. He had only two losses - one in battle and other in hospital who was severely injured. 120 odd men stopped an Armoured Brigade is a story much real than movie 300. Battle of Longewala is taught in tactical school of United States Army, Russian Army, British Army etc.Story Plus. Very few knows that after battle of longewala, the Longewala Brigade took revenge by launching a day light offensive over Three Pakistani border outpost in Gabbar Sector ahead of Longewala and captured all the three Pakistani defences and land without any casualty on Indian Side. The brigade commander was adamant on day light attack and not keeping any surprise to show Pakistani Army their real worth in front of Indian Army. It was huge embarrassment for Pakistan Army. It can be also regarded as a strange tactics of attacking without maintaining any surprise. The Pakistan defences knew that attack is coming as armoured tanks leave huge smog of dust in the air which is visible kilometres away. Inside story is that the 20 Infantry Brigade Commander (also known as Longewala Brigade) had informed the Pakistani Brigade Commander of the attack a night before the attack and challenged him to stop his boys. Pakistan failed miserably to defend it back.Footnotes[1] Zojila battle of 1948 — when Indians surprised Pakistan with tanks at 11,553 ft[1] Zojila battle of 1948 — when Indians surprised Pakistan with tanks at 11,553 ft[1] Zojila battle of 1948 — when Indians surprised Pakistan with tanks at 11,553 ft[1] Zojila battle of 1948 — when Indians surprised Pakistan with tanks at 11,553 ft
