PDF Editor FAQ

Why do some drivers only drive for one of Lyft and Uber but not both?

I stumbled onto Uber by accident in late 2011 and began to drive a black car for a limo company using the application at that time. Then I began to notice the pink mustaches and wondered what they were. Then I found out. Then Uber created the UberX platform to compete with Lyft.A former Uber black car driver tried to recruit me but my car was old and not qualified. When my personal car died I was getting fed up with the limo company so I bought a recent model used car with the idea of becoming an UberX driver. That was almost a year ago. Then I began to wonder about Lyft some more and about two months ago decided it was in my interest to investigate it in order to expand my options. Considering the stunts that Uber pulls, I was really glad that I did because suddenly I had an alternative to Uber, which is sometimes necessary when Uber pulls one of it's many stunts at lowering prices or deciding to charge the drivers more or any of the countless shenanigans they are famous for, and of course denying that they do anything at all other than "make a great driver experience" and "increase business for the drivers" which is Uberese for, figuring out how to make Uber more money while the fools that drive for us try to figure out what we're doing before we have to change again.Lyft is a more humane company and treats the drivers like they are real people and not data points to be interpreted by frat boys salivating at the alter of divine big data during a beer bust, which they cannot understand why it is not infallible because Travis Kalanick swears it is. I suspect Travis swears a lot, he seems like the epitome of a profane individual, another way of saying "one who worships at the alter of Ayn Rand".But to answer the question, I use both, sometimes interchangeably for a week and then only one of the applications for a week. It is clear that Uber has no loyalty to the drivers and does nothing to suggest they could possibly care about the drivers except lip service about want us to make them more money, but certainly little to nothing at all about their well being or any understanding about the real experience of driving the public around a large city for tens of hours a week. I drive usually over forty hours a week and consider it a safety hazard to drive significantly more than that. Lyft however has an incentive to drivers to give them a bonus for driving over fifty hours a week and I disapprove of that as much as I dislike seeing a bicyclist without a light, reflector or helmet, but I see them all the time. I guess Darwin will sort it all out, including Mr. Kalanick.

Where was Emily Altman born? When did she emigrate to the US?

I was born in Moldova, one of the Soviet Republics in 1961, towards the end of the Nikita Khrushchev era. My father knew by the mid 1960s that he wanted to emigrate, but my mother did not want to go. Fear of the unknown was her primary reason. Emigration became commonplace by the time we actually left, but at that time, it was virtually unknown.Circumstances forced my parents' hand. In 1970 my cousin who had the same last name was arrested for anti-Soviet and Zionism activities (the only evidence being a Hebrew-Russian dictionary that was found in his apartment) and imprisoned for three years.Since he had the same last name, it was clear that all the family members bearing that name had whatever chances of a college education or a good job in the Soviet Union disappear in one fell swoop. Since my father had two school-age daughters and his brother had two sons, they decided it was time to go.My aunt who lived in Israel sent us an invitation, and we applied for an exit visa. Since it was the time of Detente and since we lived in an area not inundated with exit applications, we were given permission to emigrate to Israel. We were lucky. Many others had to wait for years. We left Moldova on April 29, 1973 on a train bound for Bucharest, where we spent 3 gorgeous days before flying to Tel Aviv.Because both my parents had a higher education, when we arrived at Ben Gurion Airport, we were sent to an ulpan (a school for intensive study of Hebrew) in Dimona where we would be for the next two months. While we were in Israel we saw Israel's 25th birthday and, several months later, the Yom Kippur War. Because it was hard for my father to find a job during the War, he decided we should go to Canada. My mother was already pregnant with my little sister by the time we left Israel. When we were leaving, we were allowed to take 20 kg of baggage per person with us. So my parents chose clothes and pillows and left our magnificent collections of approximately 10,000 books (many complete editions) in Israel. It was incredibly sad, as I grew up surrounded by them!We left Israel on December 27, 1973 and with the help of the International Rescue Committee, came to Rome where we would choose where to go next. I keep referring to "we." I was 12 years old, so it was definitely my parents deciding. I was just an observer. While in Rome, we applied for a visa to Canada. The wait to immigrate to Canada was over 6 months. My mother was 5 months pregnant, and my parents wanted the baby to be born where we were going to live. The wait to get into the US was 2 months. The decision was made.Rome was magical! It was history and beauty intermingled with happy, friendly Italians, who would go out of their way to be helpful even though we didn't speak one word of Italian and many of them not a word of English or Russian. Thankfully my mother spoke Moldovan/Romanian fluently, and Romance languages have tons in common! On February 27, 1974, we left Rome to come to the US. We landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK/KJFK) in New York City, exhausted from the plane trip that started at 4 a.m. due to a plane delay. We would stay overnight in New York, then fly out to Detroit, MI, our final destination, in the morning. When a van picked us up from the terminal to take us to an airport hotel, all I could do was look around at EVERYTHING that was happening at JFK even though it was pretty late. Our van slowed down to allow a limo to make a left turn in front of us. A limo that was like a block long. The clearest thought I remember was wondering how the heck a block-long car (a) existed, and (b) was able to actually turn from one street onto another!Bright and early the next morning, we were picked up from the hotel and dropped off at the terminal. This plane ride was short, 90 minutes or so, and we were in Detroit. My first impression of Motor City was green grass sticking out from under soot-covered snow at the edges of the highway! Blew my mind!A long explanation for something that could have been: born in Moldova USSR, came to the US in 1974. Thanks, guys! This was the photo of my middle sister, Izolda, and me on our immigration visa. My little sister, Golda, was born in the US one month after we arrived.

Shouldn't there be more white support for Trump?

As much as I would love having birthday cake for every meal, unlimited horsey rides, big, beautiful, unbreakable balloons that never float away, and being first in line, every time at all the rides at Trumpy Land Park…I’m mentally ill, not freaking stupid! A con artist is a con artist regardless of what they are wearing or how much money they have. I, personally, wouldn’t recommend shaking that man’s hand without counting your fingers immediately afterwards. The white race doesn’t band together overlooking stupidity, cowardliness, ego-maniacal blustering, or plain and simple BS because it happens to come out of a white mouth. I will never support a man who I cannot tell if he lies about his former lies because he’s so in love with himself that he cannot bring himself to admit that he is just as slimy and corrupt as every other politician out there, or whether he is just a compulsive liar with God only knows how many other severe mental illnesses. How could ANY people honestly cheer when a candidate says they could kill someone on 5th Avenue and not lose voters? If that’s white…I don’t want to be white. Just call me pale…well, today, maybe a little anemic or pasty, how about frosty?I do not know how great he is in business, nor do I really care because this is the United States of America, not a business. The economy is ONE single part of the job of the President of the US, the rest of the job is not a business and it is absolutely clear that Trump knows absolutely nothing about it. He knows more about ISIS than the Generals, “let him tell you”!! What GENERALS are those? General Mills Cereal? The General Car Insurance? General Motors? General Tires? And every time he says “Let me tell you” I hear “Once upon a time….” Personally, I say, let’s have a practice run, send him to Syria and SEE how great he can negotiate with ISIS, all those “Muslim” friends of his (he said it, not me) I’m sure can get him there and translate, because, as you know…they ALL know the bad people, that’s why we are supposed to be surveilling their Mosques. I want to see him running his mouth to ISIS leaders. I want to see him say McCain is less a soldier for getting “captured” when someone from ISIS has a handful of his transplanted back hair stapled onto his head. He’s so excited to send OUR troops into ISIS territories without even understanding a damn thing about terrorism or the Middle East because it’s not him who actually has to risk his life doing it. Then, great, he wrote the Art of the Deal, go deal with them, if he can get them to cut a deal (instead of his throat) I’ll actually switch my vote and campaign for him for free. If they cut his throat…is it illegal to send ISIS a thank you card? Just kidding…I think. As for his oh so disgusting “talent” at running a business, anyone who even remotely discusses defaulting on our debts, or negotiating our debts like he negotiated thousands of small people into bankruptcy, or selling off our national assets, that is appalling even as a joke - no less that he is actually serious about it. This is our country - not some casino in Atlantic City that meant nothing more to him than some goal he had to accomplish. This is our country, our lives not something he gets to accomplish that he may or may not fail at! As a white person…how am I supposed to miss this? Why would anyone think that a rational, reasonable (white) person would miss this?Trump University, which he continues to say was an unbridled success, and he has the proof of 98% satisfied reviews…look it up, there are over 10,000 of them. Oddly enough, you can check out Trump University records, there were ONLY 7,611 tickets sold for courses. That leaves 2, 389 reviews that absolutely should not exist as there were not tickets sold for it. And only 98% of those were positive?? I’m white…not illiterate…not stupid…I passed English, literature and comprehension!! I even passed math! If Trump can explain how over 10,000 reviews can come from Trump University when there were NEVER more than 7,611 tickets sold to attend courses (one ticket per person per class) then he doesn’t need to be President…he should be rewriting mathematical theory because he has discovered a whole new system of math. However, if he does not, as it is FAR more likely, actually have the over 10,000 reviews that he claims to have (that might have been “put” on his site) then he is, yet again, a LIAR!! Adding more fraud to an already enormous pile of FRAUD that Trump University was in the first place. You can call it business, you can call it “salesmanship” you can call it whatever you want to call it…but convincing people to take out more debt in order to become a “millionaire” (which you know they can’t because you aren’t actually giving them anything) when they are already barely hanging on with a thread isn’t business - it’s REPULSIVE. I know that white people can’t jump, or dance, or…well, heck, can’t do a lot of stuff, but I’m pretty sure most of us can recognize fraud when we see it. If you watch enough American Greed, you’ll find that we can recognize it because a lot of white people are very good at running them.Trump loves our veterans? Then why are there numerous articles on the Internet with the LETTERS he wrote to various officials in New York to get vets kicked off the streets because they were bringing down his property values. He didn’t suggest that they be put to work for him. He didn’t suggest where or how they could be better served. He didn’t try to get them jobs to better serve our government - NO, he just wanted them off HIS streets, so they didn’t interfere with his property values. This man who wants to help the vets didn’t run down and pass out applications for a construction job, or send his limo to drive them to a safe shelter, or buy them a meal, give them a blanket when it was cold - he wanted them off his streets because of his property values, so he stayed up there in his house, looking down on what he considered the dregs of society and wrote letters to officials telling THEM to remove the vets from his pristine sidewalks. He wants you to look at the past, look at all that Obama has brought you, look what Clinton did…well, do it! Look at what this man did to vets - LOOK, HE WANTS YOU TO! When has any decision he has ever made helped anyone but him?! He didn’t discriminate against Jewish people in Florida - why would any professional person want to discriminate against anyone with money? And I’m not saying that “Jewish people = money” I’m saying that if a person is rich - any race, creed, color, or sex - why would you discriminate against them? Before Nicole was murdered…who would have refused OJ Simpson service? Even the most racist of people look the other way when money is involved. Trump makes business decisions for Trump’s best interests - when has he ever done anything for someone else? He took money from the 9–11 small business recovery fund when he publicly said that he came through it unscathed. What was that? To help the common man? To teach President Bush a lesson? That was OUR tax money. He claims to have been against the Iraq War…but he said on the Howard Stern show that he was FOR the Iraq war even though he wished we would have finished the job the first time. He wants you to look - so look! Why do you think any white person should overlook this? Why should someone who is white not care about this? Because I’m white I’m supposed to be blind to this? NEVER. Because I was born white doesn’t mean I’m predisposed to overlook all the things that are wrong in this world. It doesn’t mean that I don’t care about people. It means that *I* have more of a duty than anyone to fight for these things. IF, BECAUSE I’M WHITE, I HAVE SOME SORT OF “SPECIAL POWER,” THAT PEOPLE LISTEN TO ME MORE THAN THEY LISTEN TO OTHER RACES, THEN I SHOULD BE SCREAMING FOR JUSTICE, FOR DIGNITY, FOR FAIR AND EQUAL TREATMENT, AND TO PUSH THOSE RACISTS BACK INTO THE SWAMPS, THE HILLS, THE JUNK YARDS, AND EVEN BACK INTO THEIR IVORY TOWERS TO HIDE LIKE THE COWARDS AND CREEPS THEY ARE!!!Sorry, my friend, no, Trump should not have more white support - not at all - Trump should have NO support! Not white, not African American, not Hispanic, not Asian, not Middle Eastern, NONE!
