What are applications of data science and machine learning in the oil and gas industries?

I'm a materials scientist in R&D for a chemical company who sees some similarities between some of problems we face internally and what you're asking about the oil and gas field. I'll provide an answer based on the requirement that both fields must to adhere to the same rules of chemistry/physics even though the end application is different.In oil and gas, engineers may want to know the ratio of oil/gas/water in what's being transferred through pipelines from offshore drilling activities by using a non-invasive technique. One way to do this is by passing a beam of gamma rays through the pipe and looking at the attenuation of the beam as it interacts with the material, which provides info about the material's density. Typically multiple beams at different wavelengths, energies and geometries are used because you have multiple degrees of freedom present in the problem you're trying to solve (i.e. you want to know the percentage of oil and water in the mixture).All of this is complicated due to how the material is flowing through the pipe. For example, at low flow rates the oil and water phases can separate into two layers with the oil phase flowing above the water phase while at high flow rates you may have a homogenous “intimately mixed” material which isn't separated at all. Also remember there's gas in the mix too, so at low flow rates you actually have three separate layers with the most dense phase being on the bottom (water) and the least dense phase being on the top (gas). To cover all of the various mixes and configurations of oil/gas/water, multiple gamma beams are used (six seems to be popular) to probe at different points in the pipe and at different energies.So with this information the prediction problem can be addressed. How do you combine data from multiple sources (gamma ray beams) to predict the fractions of oil/gas/water and geometric configuration of the mixed phases in the pipe? Your ML model needs to learn to predict properties about the mix based on the data provided by the beams. You may have data taken from prior runs that used all six beams to classify the drilling runs into low, medium and high flow rates (stratified or layered, annular or homogenous configurations), but now you want to classify the new and unlabeled with data from only two beams. Why you have a lesser number of beams could range from costs to a beam being down because it’s damaged or it’s undergoing maintenance and so on.From the perspective of a materials engineer working at a chemical company, similarities are present because we often use molecules in a process to produce a material with some property that others like and we can sell to them. We usually have information about various properties of the molecule, and we want to improve the product we sell by enhancing a key property to make the material even better. Instead of discovery new molecules we can use through brute force trial and error, we will sometimes prescreen untested molecules by classifying these molecules into "test in lab" and "don't bother" buckets by going through a similar classification scheme as described above.The oil and gas example is from a talk given by S.
