Who was the first supermodel ever, and what is her life story?

Ever wondered who was the first Super model ever? The tragic and heart breaking real-life story of the world's first supermodel. When Gia Carangi's life is remembered at all, it is remembered as a tragedy. Though she is acknowledged as the world's first true supermodel, her short life and her tragic demise mean that her name isn't as widely known as you'd expect from someone who had achieved such a feat. Born in 1960, Carangi's face was all over magazines by the time she was in her late teens. Less than a decade later, she was dead.Carangi is credited with originating the "heroin chic" look that ruled the fashion world in the 90s. Her story, when told today, is often shared as a cautionary tale of the dangers of drugs, but there is so much more to Carangi than her wild girl ways. Carangi was not just devastatingly beautiful, but also had a beautiful, sensitive soul. Her life was even more tragic than many people know, marked by heartbreak and an unhappy childhood. Her career started when she was quite young.Carangi was just a teenager when she started modeling for Gimbels department store. "We had always used regular models and then somebody decided we should try $10-an-hour models and just have a cattle call," photographer Michael Ahearn told Philadelphia. "Most of the people were just so awful and then along comes this little girl — she must've been 14 — and she was wonderful. She was always late, always had some excuse. But I used her as much as I could."In a time when blue-eyed blondes ruled the industry, Carangi's darker features made her stand out. By the time she was 18, she had landed an ad for Versace and was pulling in $100,000 per year (valued at more than $350,000 in 2019 taking inflation into account). It seemed that her future was made. Little did people know that Carangi's seemingly good fortune would instead mark the beginning of a nightmare that would end in tragedy. She had a troubled relationship with her familyFor a while, it seemed like Carangi was living in a fairy tale. Not only was she poised to become a successful model, but her career also helped her to escape an unhappy childhood. Carangi's father was volatile and abusive towards her mother, who eventually left the family when Carangi was 11. The only girl in the family, Carangi would spend much of her adolescence seeking her father's approval."My Dad was always working, and when he was around he paid more attention to my brothers," she wrote in her journal (via a biography, Thing of Beauty). "I would try to get his attention and he would reject me by putting me down, making fun of me, teasing me. He would do this in front of my brothers. I felt like they were better than me and the only difference was they were boys. I feel my father never gave me what I needed growing up which was love, understanding, time... he never gave me the time of day."Her mother was uncomfortable with her attraction to womenCarangi's relationship with her mother was also tense. In adolescence, Carangi found herself attracted to another girl. When her mother found out, she sent her teenage daughter to a therapist in hopes that she would overcome her attraction to women. Carangi's mother was convinced that her daughter's sexuality was just a phase. "It's very difficult for me to relate to all that because I don't have feelings or inclinations that way," Carangi's mother said in Thing of Beauty. "I can really say that I can accept a person no matter what their sexual preferences are, but I simply can't identify with that."In order to please her mother, Carangi went to see the therapist. Fortunately, rather than trying to "cure" Carangi, as might have happened years prior when same-sex attraction was classified as a mental illness, Carangi's therapist instead told her that there was nothing wrong with her feelings and helped her become more confident with her sexuality.David Bowie influenced her in more ways than oneCarangi was greatly influenced by music and fashion icon David Bowie. She and many of her friends emulated his androgynous style. It was a style that would continue to define Carangi's personal look for the rest of her life. However, it was more than just Bowie's style that enraptured Carangi. She was also drawn to him as a symbol of rebellion and countercultural values. Bowie, who was himself bisexual, was an LGBTQ role model in a time where many LGBTQ celebrities kept their sexuality a secret.Carangi's devotion to Bowie didn't impress her family. Her stepfather, Henry Sperr, said in Thing of Beauty that Bowie had seemed to change Carangi. "She got a Bowie haircut and that changed her personality completely," he said. "She seemed like a sweet, young little kid before, and then afterward... well, you know, it probably had something to do with the drugs. She would be disrespectful, she would be constantly fighting, just over nothing. And she'd be very rebellious."A history of sexual assault left her traumatizedSome of those who knew Carangi remember her as angry. If she was angry, she had good reason to be. Throughout her life, Carangi suffered through a number of sexual assaults, the trauma of which never truly left her. A friend of hers, Rob Fay, revealed some of the horrors of Carangi's life in Thing of Beauty."She had a rough time with a lot of men in her life," said Fay. "There were times in New York when people just took advantage of her. I guess you wouldn't really call it rape because she wasn't screaming, but there were a lot of times when that happened when she didn't want it to happen. But being as high as she was, you can't argue, you don't even know what planet you're on. Something like that happens, it's just 'Oh, well, it's part of the scene.'"Not all of the assaults Carangi suffered were dismissed as "part of the scene," though. Fay added, "She had been raped a few times. Date rape, or whatever you want to call it. She had a lot of anger about that."She viewed herself as boringIn spite of the fame and the money (or perhaps, in part, because of it) Carangi never managed to fully escape the deep unhappiness that was a constant presence in her life. The world viewed her as a once-in-a-generation beauty and also as a style icon, but Carangi was less convinced of her appeal. Even as a young girl, however, her friends saw her as a magnetic presence."That was the thing you have to remember about Gia," a friend of hers told Philadelphia. "She had grown into a very exotic-looking, very special girl. She could just sit in a chair and smile and she was automatically the center of attention. She had charisma. She wasn't extremely smart — in fact she always believed herself to be extremely dull. She always used to say, 'People look at me and they think I'm this beautiful thing and I must be extremely hot... and what they don't know is that I'm extremely boring.'"Modeling was far from a dream careerAccording to Carangi's friend, Sharon Beverly, Carangi didn't enjoy modeling at all. "Gia hated the business from the beginning," she told Philadelphia. "She felt like a piece of meat. I know it's an old cliché, but that's what she always said. She just wasn't cut out for the business, she was too sensitive for it."Other friends speculated that Carangi became a model to please her mother. "She knew her mother wanted her to be a model," said a friend. "And she knew it was her destiny." The friend added that they believed Carangi had been happier living at home and working in her father's hoagie shop. Carangi, however, had other aspirations outside of modeling and the family business. She was interested in photography, and took some classes at NYU until her busy schedule forced her to drop out. She also had plans to "make a big splash in film" as a cinematographer. She hoped to one day get married and have childrenAnother of Carangi's dreams was to get married and start a family of her own. Her friends, as well as her journal entries, reveal that Carangi was a deeply passionate woman, quick to fall in love. "Gia just loved women and she fell for them whether they were straight or gay," a high school friend told Philadelphia. While Gia was quick to fall in love, she also desperately wanted to be loved herself. "Gia was prone to needing someone around all the time," a former partner said. "Sometimes it was almost like she needed a baby sitter."A woman who did not return the affection Carangi had for her said that the model was searching so hard for love that she would sometimes fall for anyone who was kind to her, whether they were attracted to women or not. "I think she mistook caring as sexual," she said. "She needed people so badly that she pushed them away by putting expectations on them they couldn't possibly fulfill.""When you're young… it's hard to differentiate between what is real and what is not real"Would Carangi's life have turned out happier if her circumstances had been a little bit different? It's hard to say. Her youth at the launch of her career no doubt contributed to her later problems. The industry can be difficult on models, particularly when they are as young and impressionable as Carangi was when she was just starting out. In 1982, Carangi was profiled as part of a 20/20 report on the modeling world which highlighted Carangi as an example of the "dark side" of the industry."When you're young... you know, it's hard to make the difference between what is real and what is not real," Carangi said. "There's a lot of vultures around you." Carangi also talked about how she got hooked on drugs, saying that it "creeps up on you." She added, "It catches you in a world that's, you know... none that anyone will ever know except someone who's been there."Losing her mentor caused her to grow more dependent on drugsCarangi had already been using drugs when her mentor, Wilhelmina Cooper, died in 1980, but the loss of Cooper caused her addiction to spiral out of control. Cooper had signed Carangi to her modeling agency in 1978 and also took the young model under her wing."I don't know what is happening in my life, nothing seems or feels right to me," Carangi wrote in her journal (via A Sketch of the Past). "I want to live so bad. But I'm so terribly sad. I wish Wilhelmina didn't die. She was so wonderful to talk to about work. I cry every day for a little while. I wish I knew what to do... I pray that things fall into place." Carangi's biographer, Stephen Fried, told the Chicago Tribune that Cooper's death put Carangi "over the edge," calling Cooper her "surrogate mother."Other models were nasty to her, contributing to her depressionThe industry wasn't kind to Carangi. Instead of finding camaraderie with her fellow models, she instead felt shunned by many of them. Their treatment of her contributed to her loneliness and left her depressed. "The other models seem to resent me," she wrote after a photo shoot in her datebook (via Philadelphia). "Is it jealousy or [are] all girls just like that... I get the feeling a few of them would like to pull my hair out. Why don't I get those feelings toward other girls... sometimes they say things that are quite nasty and rude. I think it is a terrible part of the human race, a real flaw. I thought we were all suppose to love one another... "Another of Carangi's datebook entries elaborated more on her feelings of isolation. She wrote, "... here I sit... feeling very set apart from the other humans but I am finally really starting to dig being different. Maybe I am discovering who I am. Or maybe I'm just stoned again."She was eventually blacklisted, bringing an end to her modeling careerPerhaps even more tragic than the fact that Carangi died so young was that she died in relative obscurity. At the end of Carangi's life, she was virtually on her own, unable to get clean. While she was an A-list celebrity just a few years earlier, Carangi's continued drug use eventually brought in end to her career. Not only was she volatile and difficult to work with, but her frequent drug use had also scarred her skin leaving her arms covered in needle marks. Towards the end of her life, when she was sober enough to work, she worked in a shopping mall selling jeans and as a checkout clerk at a nursing home cafeteria."She reached her peak in 1980 but continued to work on and off through 1984, when she was finally blackballed," her biographer, Stephen Fried, told the Chicago Tribune. "She'd make money and then disappear into drug use. She tried rehab programs, but they didn't work. Her family tried to help her, but they couldn't. By 1985 she was broke, was still using drugs and had AIDS. She died, homeless, in November 1986."Her death helped changed the public's view of AIDSAt the time of Carangi's death, the public still understood very little of AIDS. It was viewed primarily as a "gay" disease, spread by sexual contact. The year before Carangi's death, the New York Daily News (via Vice) revealed that nearly half the respondents in a poll they conducted believed that those suffering from AIDS should be quarantined. Celebrities such as Carangi and actor Rock Hudson, who revealed he had AIDS in 1985, just a few months before it killed him, helped to change the face of the illness. At the time of Carangi's death, things were starting to change, and her death helped raise awareness about how AIDS is spread. The model contracted the illness through drug use, debunking the myth that AIDS was restricted to gay men. By the late 1980s, the world had become more sympathetic to sufferers of AIDS, spurring fundraising efforts and government funding.Cindy Crawford's career took off because people saw her as a "replacement" for CarangiEven after Carangi's drug use made working with her next to impossible, the industry still wanted her face on magazines. Though Carangi herself was no longer popular, her look was still very much in demand. This helped give rise to the career of another famous supermodel, Cindy Crawford, whose career was taking off in the mid 1980s. Crawford looked enough like Carangi that the industry began to see her as a substitute for the first supermodel, calling her "baby Gia." Crawford landed on the cover of Vogue in 1986, the same year Carangi died."Everyone had loved Gia," she told Vanity Fair. "So that's how I got in. In one day, I saw Avedon, Scavullo, Patrick Demarchelier, Rico Puhlmann — all the big photographers at the time. The Vogue cover was like the stamp of approval. And from that came Revlon and all the other great things."Angelina Jolie almost turned down playing her because she didn't want to "be that open"Although Angelina Jolie famously played Carangi in the 1998 HBO adaptation of her story in the film Gia, the actress was reluctant to take on the role. When first offered the role, she turned it down because she didn't want to portray such a troubled person, believing that the role would "really mess with me and drive me a bit nuts to be that open.” Jolie told the the New York Times that she initially "hated" Carangi when researching her life. After getting to know more about Carangi and her life, however, Jolie started to change her mind. While filming, she began to identify more with the supermodel, and gained a deeper appreciation for her talent and what she had gone through in her life. "Oh, God," she said about her changing views on Carangi. ”I'd like to date Gia. I'd want to be her lover.”This is a cruel cruel world out there.GIA CARANGI.Too beautiful to die. How is it to be a New Yorker?

1990s - Being a New YorkerIn general, New York is a nice big city (really big city) and is constantly expanding and reinventing itself. It's expensive, noisy, crowded, fast-paced and harsh during the peaks of summer and winter. New York City has five boroughs, and a variety of neighborhoods, so while it’s likely that nearly everyone could find some suitable area, it still won’t be right for everyone. New York exists at a double speed. Everything here is a little faster, a little more hectic, and people try to fit more things into a day than in many other places. It’s probably not a good fit for a very laid back person. For me, it’s always interesting, which is worth a great deal. But New York is not for the weak of heart, the weak of mind or the weak of body. But she's also very beautiful. That's for sure. New York’s full of life and adventure, there's always something to do, the people are strong and they speak their mind, there's the best transformation unlike most places, you don't even need a car because the subway can take you everywhere for one price - and there's so much diversity and culture everywhere. And there's this strange comfort to be living in New York, knowing that there's millions of people there and there's ALWAYS noise and something going on. No matter what time it is, there's people out, and that makes you feel safe. Also, restaurants and stores are open till very late at night, many even 24 hours, and that's great in case you ever want to have a pizza or watch a movie at midnight.I have been a New Yorker since the 1950s. Starting in 1956 when I was in the Navy, I took weekend liberties here. Besides hitting the waterfront sailor bars and night clubs, I went to the Roseland Ballroom on West 52nd Street. I love to dance and found my way there where a thousand people gathered, standing around listening to the orchestra or dancing away to their favorite music. The crowd was inter racial and many dances were like the dance styles made famous in the old Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. The music covered all genres, Guy Lombardo, Sammy Kay, with The Fox Trot, Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Mambo, Merengue, and Tango. Dancers showed off fancy footwork and twirled until they were dizzy. I could do a mean Jitter Bug and Fox Trot. I loved it!During the '60 I was back with IBM on TAD assignments. In 1964 when I was TAD at the CBS Broadcast Center for three months, every night I walked around Times Square, often I would take the F Train to the Village and walk around too. At one of the Greenwich Village folk clubs I watched this scrawny guy on stage . . . It was Bob Dylan and watching him was Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. I was in my IBM blue pin stripped suit, I guess being different they took me to see Andy Warhol at his studio, the Factory. It was the time when the hippies in Greenwich Village were the incubator for the cultural movements that shook the world. Walking around Greenwich Village you can experience both the Bohemian lifestyles and the boutique stores and street cafes serving up espresso and cheese cakes. Several times I went into the Go Go was which was an oasis for folk music, jazz, comedy, blues and rock. The club was the venue for the Grateful Dead and Joni Mitchell; Richie Havens and the Blues Project were weekly regulars . . . I saw them all . . .In 1968 I worked in Manhattan and lived Jamaica, Queens. I moved to East Orange in 1970 and every day I walked to the corner of Sunnyside Terrace and South Orange Avenue and got the bus to Newark's Penn Station. From there I took a bus to Port Authority in Manhattan, then walk up 8th Avenue to my office on 52nd Street.. What an experience . . . you could write a book or make a movie of the street characters I ran into every day. My morning ride on the South Orange Bus to Newark's Penn Station was not bad. The bus was full of Italian people going to work in or New York Newark, but at night, it was really bad because I usually came home late and the bus often had black teenage gangs or drunken old men riding it. Playing blaring radios, they were loud and obscene, they would brag about mugging and shop lifting crimes they committed. One night a drunken old man started a fight with me because I was White. I pushed him down while people ran away from us. The bus driver stopped a police car and wanted to have me arrested. The police saw how this drunk was acting and took him off the bus. When I got to my stop and got off, the bus driver wanted to fight me. He called me a White Cracker and pushed me around. I was getting very sick of these ignorant Black people who hate White people and Newark was full of them. It was time to move! Maybe an apartment in Manhattan?Manhattan intrigued me . . . it's a 'High Culture’ busy high density people packed environment. People try to live there and be close to the action albeit they suffer living in small confined apartments, but you get to work and be around people from all over the world, educated and talented, people you can learn from and business challenges you grow from to advance your career and it’s all worth it. Manhattan is the cultural capital of the world, has the biggest commercial business district in the world (Midtown) and hosts the banking, fiduciary, media, performing arts, advertising, industries and more than one hundred Fortune 500 headquarters. It is a place full of the “Movers and Shakers” who make the world turn. You play with the “Big Boys” here! I had long ago discovered working in Manhattan was a delight. The city was spontaneous, vibrant, colorful, and full of energy and I absolutely loved the place! With so many different cultures and ethnic types, every day was full of new found social experiences and people just didn’t get along, they enjoyed each other and there were constant flirtations, shared laughter, and conversations. You could easily meet someone interesting by walking around or sitting by those never-ending fountains or ledges surrounding sky scrappers. Besides being the dance club capital of the world, New York was a boy meet girl people place par excellence! Yes, the Big Apple was a series of anticipations and exciting fulfillment, enough to fill any fantasy or desire. One things you notice right away is the high level of education and talent in Manhattan, and there were not any southern “Good Ole Boys here!” Just imagine this, contrary to the socially restrictive and racially segregated South, you can’t be a racist in New York, it’s just too diverse, what with being a land of Jews, Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and ethnics of every stripe and color hue from every part of the world filling the daily scene. It is the land of ‘milk and honey’ to millions of people, especially immigrants looking to make a buck. Manhattan is a place where the rich and poor can live on the same block but exist in two different worlds of opportunity, but everyone gets along, as tolerance and “live and let live” are maxims people exist by. The millions of talented and beautiful singles who migrate to the Big Apple to become famous, rich or play with the big boys, are a breed apart in Manhattan and a class by themselves and exist somewhere between the rich and poor. They are the faithful who are looking for corporate or artistic careers. Most people love all this about Manhattan but it's very expensive and getting there from the suburbs is a commuting hell, it's another life and full of surprises every day. For example, all big commuting centers, Penn Station for trains and Port Authority Bus Terminal are crawling with panhandlers, drug dealers, and other miscreants. There's also an entire section of these terminals where they let the homeless population hang out. They are disgusting, dirty, smelly, drunks and drug addicts, many acting up and threatening commuters. I genuinely feel bad for them, they don't seem to have anywhere else to go - particularly during the colder months. In Manhattan’s Penn Station the homeless have taken over the place and the police are not allowed to keep order because the ACLU has sued any attempts to keep the homeless under control - they being mostly black en all, the ACLU seeing it as racial discrimination. A good hunk of the seating area gets taken over by generally sleepy homeless folks, but when one of them is off their meds and decides to go around screaming about military intelligence watching their bowel movements, wuh-heh-hell . . . it can be quite a show. Lots of folks hang around the main entrances and can give you grief if they're drunk or desperate. Just watch your purses and such. One thing to be concerned about both Penn Station and Port Authority is they are very filthy. The bathrooms stink and you can be attacked or robbed in them. However, I will say that New York's Penn Station has tons of great hang out bars and restaurants to accommodate the 800,000 riders a day who travel thru there.Clearly the Granddaddy of all subway systems, the New York City subway, has a personality all of its own. With 842 miles of track, 468 stations and 26 lines running 24-hours a day, 7-days a week serving more than five million people a day, New York’s subway is what other subway systems want to be some day. The New York City subway system acts as the aorta of the city, funneling millions of people in and out, commuters and tourists alike. Hate it or love it, New York depends on the subway for just about everything. You must experience the subway at least once in their lifetime, it should be on your Bucket List, it’s as American as Apple pie.If you choose to drive in the USA's worst traffic, have fun. According to CNN, of the ten worst cities for driving, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan rank first, second and fourth respectively. The only reason the Bronx didn't make the cut is because the researcher reporting the data is still trapped somewhere on the Major Deegan. Just because traffic is eternally at a standstill in New York doesn't mean taxi drivers won't find a way to gun it from zero too ludicrous in less than three seconds. The reason most citizens can't hail a cab is because from the curb all you can see are yellow blurs of light hurtling F-bombs warped by the Doppler effect. However, unlike other metropolitan areas, the subway and bus network in New York can actually get you pretty much anywhere, relatively quickly. So maybe getting an expensive apartment in Manhattan is worthwhile! Ride the subways or walk to work! So before you make the big move to the big city, there’s a lot you need to consider. Make a pros and cons list. On the pros side, you can include everything you’ve learned from the movies and TV shows that wax rhapsodic about life in the Big Apple. On the cons side, you can list all the cons and ex-cons that live here, ready to take advantage of a naive newcomer. Then add this list of 17 Reasons’ You Shouldn't Move to New York City, and try somewhere a little less intimidating, like Baghdad.New Yorkers dream of the ‘70s. The 1970s! That was New York when it was real, when rents were cheap, the cabbies were white, and you didn’t really have to know how to play to be a star. This is not to say that no one who didn’t spear a rat with the business end of a police lock pole can really claim to have experienced New York in the 1970s. Times Square, which, with its array of porn stores and sticky-floored movie houses, could rightly be called the capital of the New York 1970s. The ‘70s are a Jekyll-and-Hyde of New York eras. On one hand we fear the terrors of the time, the junkies on the fire escape scheming to steal a $50 rabbit-ear TV, the return of jazz fusion. The fact is what usually falls under the rubric of New York–in-the-1970s was really a multi decade project that began in earnest during the 1964 Harlem riots, which put white flight into high gear. The period lasted until the Crown Heights riots in 1991, which led to the election of Rudolph Giuliani in 1993.Typically, after you settle into your New York apartment, you acquire a George Foreman grill, a Netflix account, and a cat, in that order. Not a cat person? You will be. Even the most passionate dog lovers have to admit that keeping a pooch in Gotham isn't feasible, if not downright impossible. Big dogs are too big for city apartments - imagine keeping a humpback whale in your swimming pool. Small dogs tend to bark incessantly, alerting your entire building that you own a dog but are too incompetent to train it right. You might find you don't need any pets at all when nature is already providing plenty for you. A studio will be much smaller than a hotel room and cost around $1200 / month and I would need a three bedroom and heavens only knows how much that would cost. You'll have to choose whether you want to live Downtown or Uptown, West Side or East Side, you'll also have to decide if you want a roach apartment or a mouse apartment. But these vermin only hide indoors because the streets have already been claimed by the rats. New York rats are products of their hometown—they're entitled and strictly business. Dustin Hoffman didn't improvise the line "Hey, I'm walkin' here!" in Midnight Cowboy, he borrowed it from a rat. If you come across some on your walk home, and you will, just keep your head down and don't make eye contact and you should be all right.Even though almost every tried and true New Yorker has one thing in common: they've never been to the Statue of Liberty. Or been to the top of the Empire State Building or seen The Lion King. But I have been to all these plus hundreds more New York icons. The biggest disadvantage to living in New York is that it ruins living anywhere else. Despite the smells, and the sirens, and the supermodels you'll never have sex with, Gotham is still the greatest city in the world. Like that one good New Year's you once had, you'll always find yourself comparing NYC to your current place of residence. And the competition will never stack up. After all, everyone moves here for a reason. New Yorkers might gripe and complain about their hometown more often than not, but that's because we've melted into a weird sort of family. And family is allowed to talk smack and fight with one another. Or come to die. New York may attract the best and the brightest, but it also attracts the worst and the dimmest. Chances are that shady drug dealer on the corner is actually a shady drug dealer and not an NYU music major recording ambient sound for his newest multimedia aural experience. At least for now. This urban sprawl is going to increase exponentially with time. If you find yourself one day commuting to midtown from suburban Philadelphia, maybe New York isn't the city for you. Here are some reasons to be blissfully happy that you live/work in New York CityDrinking coffee four times a day, every day, isn't the exception, it's the rule. There is always someone crazier than you.
