I am a certified medical assistant and a member in good standing of the American Association of Medical Assistants. I have worked for the same private dermatology office for 8 1/2 years, in every capacity from working the front and checking patients in, coordination of referrals, insurance and billing, then on the “back office”, or clinical aspect of the practice. What I am NOT, nor have ever passed myself off to be, is a NURSE. I “roomed patients” and performed the vitals and took history on the patients directly for about 1 1/2 years….for the Physician’s Assistant in the practice…..the one the patients call “Dr. Johnson”. Now, I am the senior nurse for the newest physician in the practice, have been in this position for 2 1/2 years now……guess what my job title is listed as in my employee handbook? NOT BY MY CHOICE…..I am the doctor’s DESK NURSE. Yes, I wear my name tag each and every day that identifies me as a certified medical assistant, and I KNOW I am not a nurse…..frankly, I don’t want to be one. I like my career choice, I come from a family of ACTUAL nurses, from my grandmother down. I have EXTREME respect for the nursing profession, and would never lead someone to believe that I have the same training as an LPN, RN, etc. I think it’s just easier for the patients to equate what we do to “nurses”, it kinda rolls off the tongue easier than “medical assistant”. It probable doesn’t help that the physician I work for refers to me as his “nurse”. I’m sure there are MA’s out there trying to “pose” as nurses, just wanted to “chime in” and let you know that it’s not always the case.

Well, I’m not a doctor, but as a former Certified Nursing Assistant and Physician’s Assistant I did occasionally have to administer an enema, remove a fecal impaction or give a suppository.From my experiences I know that the patient is not any happier about it than I am. For me, however, it’s the knowledge that I am doing something to improve their situation, that comforts me as I intrude upon their world.The worst/best was performing a removal of a fecal impaction on my own grandmother! Since I was responsible for her home health care, and she was on some pretty heavy pain medication, a fecal impaction was not something I could ignore. Fortunately for both of us we both had a lot of medical training. She knew what to expect and so did I. I was able to joke with her “See? After all those times you changed my diapers while raising me, it’s your turn in the barrel! And I love you every bit as much now as you loved me then!”Whenever I give any sort of treatment (such as assisting friends with insulin injections, helping with medication issues or acting as patient advocate), I know I am making that person’s life a bit better or easier. To me every action that I do is centered in love. Yes, even with my gloved finger Where No Man Has Gone Before (pace, Gene Roddenberry!), I still love what I am doing and the person to whom I am doing it.
