What was your journey, from the time you were 15 years old to now?

A2A. Eh. I’ll give a rough sketch of this, but I can’t be assed to look up all the years and instead I’ll group it in chunks.High school: Detroit, Michigan. top student, member of a sickening array of honor societies, quiz bowl, first girlfriend (two years), studied Japanese, participated in debate, public speaking contests, played soccer and rugby. Made money by refereeing youth soccer games, writing erotica, and babysitting.College: Northampton, Massachusetts/Kyoto, Japan. Majored in Political Science and Japanese, volunteered with the Red Cross, played and the ran the rugby team. Learned how to scuba dive. Lived in Japan, visited South Korea, Thailand, and Egypt. Made money by working at the student library, writing crap essays for crap companies, and continuing with the erotica thing. Had my second girlfriend. Graduated in 4 years, Maxima Cum Laude with additional honors for writing a thesis on Yasukuni Shrine.Peace Corps: Kyrgyzstan, Various cities. Taught English and Japanese, helped build houses, helped do various trainings to send school kids to the US for study abroad, wrote a bunch of grants, survived a revolution, taught a few university courses. Learned how to live without electricity, running water, or heat. Froze my ass off. Visited Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, the Netherlands, and India. Made money by being a poor fucker; that’s what you do in the Peace Corps. After PC: Detroit, MI/Seattle, Washington. Went back to Detroit in the middle of the recession, had no idea what to do with myself, got on Craigslist, and started picking up freelance writing jobs. This turned into a very good income. One of my PC friends got back to the States and was like, “I want to move to Seattle. Never been. Do you want to come?” My freelance income was mobile so I was like, “Yeah, sure.”Seattle: My freelance writing business was absolutely booming at this point and I had a business partner. This ended up becoming a company worth around a million and we had about 30 people working for us at some point. It was massive. Obtained a Professional Writing Certification from the University of Washington. After about a year, my PC roommate got into a master’s degree in Tucson, Arizona, and had to move. During this time, another PC friend had visited Portland, Oregon for a summer librarian internship, and through her my roommate and I met a college friend of hers. After the other PC friend went back to the East Coast, my roommate and I stayed friends with this guy. When my roommate was moving to Arizona, he was like, “Want to move to Portland?” so I was like, “Yeah, sure.”Portland: Lived with a bunch of hippies. Spent a ton of time at my friend’s mom’s tree farm. The business was massive and doing well, but I was unhappy. During this time, I met my friend’s girlfriend; both he and the girlfriend had gone to NYU, and she was still out in New York. I was a bit on the rocks due to the decision to get out of my business, and she was like, “Why don’t you move to New York City and get your teaching certificate there?” so I was like, “Yeah, sure.”NYC: Lived in Ditmas Park with more hippies; five of us and a dog in a two bedroom apartment. The apartment was lovely, though, and with $400/month rent… uh, yeah. Any New Yorker’s jaw will drop to the floor on that one. Right on the Q. Obtained my CELTA and continued independently freelance writing. Got an English teaching job in Russia.Moscow, Russia: Lived with a lovely Canadian roommate in the Yasenovo district. Taught kids up through adults. Went to insane nightclubs that stayed open all night long. Ate a lot of gretcha. This was in 2014, because that was when the ruble fell on its sword and I ended up leaving my contract early to go to England.Cambridge, England. My college roommate was finishing her PhD at Cambridge, so I went to live with her for a while. Continued freelance writing. Never secured any sort of visa or whatever, so this wasn’t a super-long-term thing. I liked Cambridge, though; nice place. Good food.Detroit, Michigan. Went back home and got a job teaching cooking classes to kids and also English on the side. Lived at home with my parents, who were just happy I was, like, around for five seconds. But then I got a job in Kazakhstan.Astana, Kazakhstan. Cold as balls and very isolated, but lovely people. However, my boss was an absolute dickhead. Holy shit, was he awful. But the pay here was great, particularly since I got paid in dollars while the tenge was on the rocks. However, since the guy couldn’t manage the company well, it was bleeding money and a bunch of us ended up closing our contracts early since we couldn’t stand him anyway. Seriously. Worst boss I’ve ever had. Visited Germany during this time. When I left Kazakhstan I flew to—Tbilisi, Georgia. I rented an apartment through booking and the guy that came to pick me up from the airport was absolutely thrilled that I was an English teacher. I was only planning on staying here for about a week, but ended up spending over a month since he gave me seriously decreased rent in exchange for teaching his daughter, who was lovely. I did get a ton of job offers here, but the pay was extraordinarily bad. Had a fling with a Macedonian guy about 30 years older than me who was really rich and wanted to take me on a Mediterranean cruise. Considered it, but decided that I wasn’t really interested in the arrangement. Spent some time up in the mountains in a village with the family of the guy who owned my apartment. Went to Batumi and fought off a rape attempt. Decided to move on.Odessa, Ukraine. Ended up spending more time here than I expected since I ended up in an apartment with a lawyer, his wife, and three sailors who were totally awesome. I taught them English and they gave me a decreased rate. Ended up finishing up the summer here and it was lovely. Considered staying, but decided to move on.Continued trip through a lot of Eastern Europe for about two more months before flying home out of Copenhagen. Now: Back in Detroit, freelance writing, doing some other businessy things on the side, occasionally editing stuff. I’ll be back in Europe this upcoming January for my Cambridge PhD friend’s wedding and also to visit my boyfriend. Who I met on Quora. So that’s where we are. As for what the hell I’ll be doing this time next year, I have no fucking idea. I very well could be leading a brass band in Namibia, for all the consistency I’ve had.
