PDF Editor FAQ

Do we need any special permission or any other document to take school students to a heritage site?

In the USA, you had better not take students off campus as a group without the University’s knowledge and written permission and without getting each student (or his or her parents) to sign a permission slip with a liability waiver.

Why do hotels say they won't be responsible if someone steals from your room? They are responsible for the premises, right? What if their own staff, e.g. cleaners, maids, etc. steal money, which is something that often seems to happen?

**I am a hotel receptionist in a hotel in the southern United States and this is where my perspective is coming from. Other hotels may work differently so this is a personal perspective.Lots of weird stuff happens at hotels. Mysterious blood stains on doors. Finding naked sleeping people outside. Just a few days ago someone stole all 6 light bulbs from one of our rooms, nothing else, just the light bulbs. Because of all this weird stuff and the high amount of people who go in and out, hotels go out of their way to NOT be responsible for what happens on their premises. That receipt you sign at the end of your hotel check-in process? It’s probably a liability waiver that says something along the lines of “The management assumes no responsibility for accidents, injuries, theft or loss due to any cause.” When you stay at the hotel and sign the receipt, you’re agreeing to those terms. From the hotel’s perspective, it’s just easier to assume no responsibility for anything rather than deal with lawsuits and people demanding compensation. It’s the same reason why schools make you sign those liability and permission slips before a school trip. Besides, often what happens on a hotel property is outside of the hotel’s control and police officers understand this. Once we had a hotel guest have some personal drama going on and someone he was fighting with slashed his tires on the hotel property. Said guest called a police officer and tried pegging the blame on us since it happened in our parking lot. The police officer straight up said “You can’t blame them for that.”To address the other question about what if a hotel’s maids are stealing, let me provide an insider’s perspective. Hotel maid turnover is ridiculous. I’ve worked for the hotel I’m at now for less than 10 months and I’ve seen over a dozen maids come and go. Nobody wants to be a maid. It’s grueling, thankless, underpaid work where you’re constantly dealing with sex-stained sheets, cleaning vomit out of sinks and literally dealing with people’s shit all the time (Poop and urine clean ups aren’t everyday but are fairly common). People normally become maids when they’re desperate, don’t have much money and can’t find other work. And when they find some other way to make money, they escape ASAP. And even if they haven’t found another way to make money, they’ll probably just straight up stop showing up to work because the work makes them feel so dead inside.I can’t speak for other hotels, but we don’t do background checks on staff at ours. Don’t have the time and resources when we’re perpetually understaffed, overworked and something important is always breaking. Chances are, you’ll have background unknown, desperate for money, spiritually-drained women (men are rarely great maids) cleaning your room. This isn’t justification for stuff being stolen, but I wanted to provide insight into why it happens. If a maid is discovered to be stealing or isn’t doing a very good job, they would be fired but pretty soon another troubled, down-on-her-luck woman would take her place. And this cycle will repeat itself. That being said, compared to the high number of rooms that are cleaned everyday, not that much stuff is stolen. I’ve been working at a budget hotel for nearly 10 months and the only things I’ve heard being stolen is money on tables which maids also sometimes mistaken as tips (Hotel maids do occasionally get tipped, which is only right, they deal with a lot of metaphorical and literal shit).Honestly, maids stealing isn’t super common. Guests stealing on the other hand is a different story. Towels, bed sheets, light bulbs, remotes. People take what they can get.People looking up this question probably have had things taken from them or have had bad experiences at hotels. I’m sorry, you didn’t deserve that. Here are some tips to prevent it from happening in the future:1.) Hanging up a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door for most, if not all, of your stay at a hotel. Nobody goes into your room, nothing is messed with or stolen. Just do your own cleaning, don’t be messy. Hypothetically if a hotel has a maid with a penchant for stealing she is most likely going to be casually stealing from rooms she has to go in to clean. If you request no housekeeping and have that “Do Not Disturb” sign she will probably not go out of her way to go into your room and take stuff when she can more easily swipe stuff from a room she has to clean anyways. Maids want to finish the job as quickly as possible, they aren’t going to make things harder on themselves and go into rooms they don’t have to.2.) Put your stuff away in your luggage, drawers, etc. If your room has a safe, use it. If you happen to have a housekeeper in your room that day, your stuff will less likely be messed with if it is out of sight (deep and hidden away in your luggage). This also prevents a maid from accidentally throwing away your stuff because she thought it was trash. If a maid is tired (which is most of the time) they will see your half used medicine with some other food wrappers on your table as trash and throw it all away. This happened once before at the hotel I work at.Once again, if you’re reading this and have had your stuff messed with/stolen at a hotel, that really sucks. And I hope it doesn’t happen to you again in the future.

How can I convince my mom to let me go to the gym as a skinny 13 yo boy?

Your parent probably doesn’t want to pay for a gym membership for you. If you pay for your own membership, your parent may let you go. You may also be permitted to smooch freebie gym time (such as church youth group gym, or going with someone else as a guest to their membership), especially if you have your own transportation or bumming ride off of your friend. Unwillingness or inability to pay for a gym membership (and possibly drive you) is the most probable scenario. If your mom is just paranoid, try to get into school sports. Though your paranoid mom may not permit sports participation as permission slip is required and possibly also liability waiver. Some high school sports teams include gym time in their practices. Football especially (some high school even have a higher-end gym that is exclusively for varsity football player use only). Some soccer teams do gym time in preseason. Shot put / discus / hammer in track & field will also have gym time in practices both preseason and in-season.Some high school PE classes involve choosable sports / activities (by grading period or by semester), which could include weightlifting. Even a paranoid mom cannot prevent this. Even less preventable by paranoid moms is if you don’t have choosable activities in your high school PE and you just do a little bit of everything. This may include 2–4 weeks of weight training.
