What is the best old school Italian restaurant in New York City?

Queen Restaurant on Court Street, Brooklyn, NY!

What restaurant or bar exemplifies old Brooklyn to you?

Hey! Have to admit that I don’t stray far from my neighborhood these days, but if I want to feel comfortable and well fed, I go to Queen Ristorante on Court Street, Brooklyn Heights.( Oh, that reminds me - there’s another dive bar about a block away from Queen, towards Montague on Court. I’m sure I’ll remember the name as soon as my head hits the pillow tonight. )Queen is clean, decor a bit old fashioned - pink tablecloths, mirrors, a bit of gold, but the bartender knows all the cocktails, the food is solid, old-fashioned Italian, and the wait service is excellent. It’s been on that block for ages, and it’s the go-to for Court Street law firms’ celebrations. When I’ve gone there with people 40or 50 yrs my junior, they’ve loved it! The other places I’ve loved are long gone - e.g. Armando’s on Montague back in the days soon after it was Marilyn Monroe’s local favorite. It steadily went downhill after being sold to a Greek restaurateur, who passed it on to his rude dtr., and is now closed! Foffe’s on Montague, as well! There were also dozens of atmospheric places, that had not yet been “discovered” and changed to shit, in Manhattan! Those were the fucking good old days. Hope you make your own lovely gastronomical and boozy memories.Best to you in enjoying your youth!

What is the best underground/abandoned subway station tour in NYC?

In addition to the answers that were given, I would add the most obvious suggestion - a trip to the MTA Transit Museum which is itself an “abandoned underground subway station!” The NYC Transit Museum uses the abandoned Court Street station that was intended to be the terminal station of the H or HH trains, the local train route that would have serviced the local stations along the Brooklyn segment of the A-train line under Fulton Street. The Court Street station was closed due to lack of ridership and the fact that most Brooklyn riders preferred to travel directly to and from Manhattan with the relatively nearby Jay Street-Borough Hall, and Hoyt/Schermerhorn Street stations closer to the downtown Brooklyn business district of the 1940’s. The Court Street was closed and served as a great place for movie producers and others who wanted to film subway related scenes in their movies, commercials and other products - while at the same time not interfering or bieng disrupted by regular subway traffic. The opening of the NYC Transit Exhibit inside the Court Street station in about 1975 allowed the MTA to show off its history, vintage trains, and to become a resource of New York City history.
