Aside from Rico and Dizzy, they don’t see each other as sexual human beings or prospective romantic partners. They know each other person is just meat for the Mobile Infantry. They have no real sexual attraction to each other. So far as we know, they have no real external lives or personal attachments. They do not live or defend any kind of autonomy over their own lives. They don’t live in any kind of free society. They do not vote. These thinly described hopes and dreams? They are entirely secondary to their federal service. In some cases, their very privilege depends on surviving that service. They are just apes who can pull triggers. To apply force.And the Federation’s ability to use them to project that force is violence. And violence is the supreme authority from which all other authority is derived.If you listen to Carl’s speech to Rico, the fleet admiralty quietly knows they’re in a pure numbers games against the bugs. There are more bugs. They reproduce faster. And they’re stronger. As the board is set, the humans are losing.A body politic which loses the power to project force and wage war against its attackers will simply cease to be. Though, in universe—if you caught the subtle message—it is the humans who are the attackers.And the body politic does not have the sense to know it.
