Less than 20% of the healthcare dollar goes to physician’s and other clinician’s fees.Opening more medical schools will increase the supply of doctors available to take care of patients. Not true either. A bigger bottleneck now is the shortage of residency training programs such that not all graduating physicians can get a spot. Unfortunately, residency training programs cost money (federal government money for the most part), so there hasn't been much appetite for funding those programs recently…Doctors charge what they want, so if there were more competition, prices would be lower. Not really. In terms of how much money doctors make for each patient seen, if adjusted for inflation, that has either gone down or stayed flat for quite some time. What would make a bigger difference in doctors’ salaries would be a shift in preference and distribution from highly paid specialty care to more moderately reimbursed primary care. Of course, to achieve that, the debt of medical school graduates would have to be at a more reasonable level and there would have to be a bunch of new Family Medicine Residency Programs (see point number 2 above).
