My background is in electronics engineering, business analytics was my MBA concentration, post which I went after a PhD in data science. I’m suck at engineering math but have a solid foot in quants. I’m also good at computers such that I can pick up anything new in a very short amount of time. My career literally took off as soon as I was done my MBA. Without trying to brag, I was the top student in the analytics courses and that got me very close to the professors. Because of this, one of my profs personally forwarded my resume to one of his friends who owned an analytics startup in town. I was hired before I finished school.Now, this company had no competitors in terms of data and analytics in the region that it was located in, therefore we had a lot of local clients requiring analytics consulting. But we also worked in collaboration with corporate giants like AIG Insurance, LinkedIn, TransUnion, Dun & Bradstreet, etc. Because it was a startup, we had to assume many different job roles in a single day - from being an analyst, to a project manager, to being the face of the company when talking to or pitching about a new product to a client. And because we dealt with data and analytics, I got to meet and work with seinor managers, VPs, directors from banks and other financial institutions, other startup founders and CEOs, etc.In the meantime I also kept one foot in academia by having a second job as a TA for my professor where I taught part-time classes and conducted labs for the MBA-Business Analytics students. Altogether combined, I had a solid resume to be accepted for a PhD. Somewhere in that time I realized that I don’t like the mundane routine of a 9–5 job so I decided to come back to my alma mater and see if I could find a job as a professor. Still not there yet but I’m an assistant prof at the university and an instructor at a local college.So yeah, life turned out to be pretty good after business analytics.
