PDF Editor FAQ

Is it okay if a male teacher calls his female student "honey"?

Male teacher here. The answer is no.Well, unless they are doing a play, and her character’s name is “Honey.” Or maybe that’s her real name. Then maybe he could call her that.I call all of my students by their first name, or their last name if there are two students with the same first name, or I sometimes call them “kid” if I can’t remember their name fast enough. I’ve also been known to refer to them by their location in the room.“You, front row, corner seat… What did you get for #5?”A teacher of any gender should never call a student of any gender any nickname that has any sort of relationship connotation. That’d include names like honey, babe, sweetie, muffin, sugar, flour, eggs, mix well, preheat oven, etc…Teachers are also warned against commenting on any part of a student’s physique or physical appearance. A student could grow four inches taller over the summer or shave their head overnight, and I’d just pretend I didn’t notice.

What's your message to the world?

I can almost hear the hate comments I might get for this answer but this needs to be said: Calling a dark person dark isn’t racist.Once, I was asked to describe a certain teacher who had just joined the school. I went ahead and began using adjectives which described him best.Me: He is tall.Friend: There are many tall teachers.Me: He wears specs.Friend: Come on! Almost all teachers wear specs.Me: He has a really dark complexion.Friend: Wow. That’s racist.Really? Is it racist? Is stating a fact to use it as a way to describe someone with innocuous intentions truly racist? You know what? The fact that a person believes that dark complexion is so hideous that even its mention or acknowledgement is disgusting, makes that person racist. So you tell me, as long as there’s no hint of joke or condescension, is it truly racist to call a dark person dark?

What was the oddest reason that your child's principal ever called you?

Called to principal's office because my autistic 7th grade girl had drawn a couple of pictures depicting a hand being cut with a knife.Everybody is there. All teachers, psychologist, principal, everybody except my daughter. Eventually, homeroom teacher, who discovered the drawing, passed it around for everyone to see. When it got to the English teacher, she gasped, and looked, well, weird. She knew immediately what my daughter had drawn, and looked really embarrassed. The students in her class were reading Poe's “A Tell Tale Heart". A truly classic and kinda gruesome horror story in which a guy cuts some people up and stores the severed parts under the floorboards of his house. My daughter wasnt a potentially violent kid waiting to go off on people, shes a talented and budding illustrator who drew a scene right out of the book. So accurate, in fact, that the one teacher who has read the book, knew exactly the scene she had drawn. No one had thought to ask my daughter why she would draw such a thing. Whitesboro, NY schools, you kinda suck.
