PDF Editor FAQ
Is the term "Neo-Chetnikism" an appropriate term to describe the Serbian far-right (just like the term "Neo-Confederacy" for American alt-right or "Neo-Nazism" for Western European alt-right), or would the term be repugnant to Serbians?
I don’t think it is. But there is an element of truth in it…Chetnik isn’t an ideology, it is an informal, descriptive term for a member of ‘company sized groups of guerilla fighters’ - ‘’Cheta’’ (Četa) being the word for ‘’company’’ or ‘’squad’’, that was loyal or in control of Royal Army of Serbia, that has its roots in Balkan wars (1912–1913) and earlier - during the struggle for independence from Ottoman occupation, but that gained prominence during WWII as a resistance movement turned German collaborator. The name therefore refers to a style of fighting or conducting warfare, not necessarily socio-political theory.Chetnik groups were heterogenous in nature, in size, organisation, training as well as ideology. While generally loyal to the King, themselves Serbian nationalists, both orthodox and Orthodox Christian, often anti-Semitic…it is hard to define a ‘Chetnik ideology’ that would apply to all. Therefore, while neo-Communist or neo-Nazi is an understandable term which refers to a (particularly clueless) individual who subscribes to an obsolete, extremist ideology, neo-Chetnik is mostly…meaningless.Speaking of clueless, however, there are indeed groups and individuals in Serbia who wish to revive and standardise Chetniks, thus turning 19-20th century guerilla fighters into some sort of symbol of mainstream patriotism. For decades after WWII the image of Chetniks - who turned German collaborators mostly due to the disagreement with Communists’ strategy of resistance that was simultaneously a resistance to Germans and a communist revolution (not necessarily in that order), which got thousands of civiliains killed in the process - was at the mercy of post war Communist regime who in an infamously ‘objective’ way, demonized the nationalist guerilla beyond recognition. So with the decay of Communist ideology that reigned supreme for 50 years until the breakup of Yugoslavia, as well as the rise of chauvinist ideologies all across Yugoslavia, the phenomenon of Chetnik romantisation and ‘revival’ gained prominence as well. It happened in two waves, both featuring people uninterested in the historical context or objective analysis of the group(s).First wave was during Yugoslav wars of 1991–1995, when various paramilitary groups and fighters, including a far right wing political party SRS (Serbian Radical Party allied to the socialist regime, awkwardly enough) adopted Chetnik apparel, titles etc. That is when the term Chetniks started to be connected to far right only (or in case of Serb enemies in Yugoslav wars, a slur for all Serbians).(Serbian ‘Chetnik’ looking paramilitaries in 1991, War in Croatia)Second wave came, paradoxically enough, after the overthrow of the socialist regime in 2000, introduction of democratic system, and sharp switch from a war torn decade into a time of peace and relative stability. The explosion of nationalist sentiment in contrast to despised Communist/Socialist ones pushed many into the opposite extreme while the opportunities to express it became fewer and fewer. With actual crisis or danger out of the way, a particular form of right wing nationalism started to gain momentum among young and impressionable, yet cozy and safe. So Chetniks didn’t really receive a somewhat necessary reexamination of their historical role, as much as they became a trope, a logo, a ‘costume’ that will make like minded nationalists recognise themselves without much knowledge about historical events, figures or even care about historicity of their beliefs. It’s mostly about the superficial, the ‘apparel’, today and using Chetniks’ (modified) visual identity as recognisable symbols of religiously inspired patriotism and to lesser extent (compared to historical Chetniks) anti-left feelings (Commie is still a slur for anyone not deemed right wing enough though). Gay people are more likely targets these days (though it changed abruptly once political party, ex SRS, they support came into power). And that sort of thing is, indeed, common to most (far) right wingers in Serbia. Chetniks will be romanticised by most. From role playing groups and self-proclaimed, stupefying, but largely benign ‘’bastions of patriotism’’ - football hooligans, who gave Chetniks a sort of pop culture spin,to somewhat more dangerous, far right extremists ranging from illegal organisations, gangsters and criminals, and mercenaries in foreign wars.Or most entertainingly - Serb neo-Nazi groups, those virtuosi of absurd and paradox (we even have neo-Nazi leader of Jewish descent), have inserted into their well known rabid rhetoric - a call for rehabilitation of Chetniks, while championing the view of Chetniks…that was kindly provided by the Communist propaganda.Still, despite the fact most if not all far right wingers in Serbia will have positive or even romanticised image of Chetniks, among plethora of different beliefs and stances - bunching up all far right chauvinism into neo-Chetnikism is wrong, because there hardly is an underlying ideology behind a carefully made costume, and most of it has nothing to do with Chetniks anyway, either historical or fictional. Not only are there much more moderate right wing and monarchist proper parties who romanticise Chetniks, but it’s merely a common point (far) right itself agrees on, or a common trait, as is being a deeply troubled brainwashed imbecile for example.
