There is some slight confusion towards which Canadian School earns the title for the best musical theatre program, as no one has written a definitive ranking. So I would like to share my insight, ranking the top schools. This is a highly agreed upon order between industry professionals and Canadian musical theatre nerds alike, but then again we’re all entitled to our opinions.#1 Sheridan College, Honours Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance. (Honours Bachelor of Applied Arts in Music Theatre Performance.) Oakville, Ontario, CanadaThis highly competitive program is an intense bachelor degree mirroring the style of many BFA programs in the USA. To be admitted into this exclusive program, one must pass a prescreening audition as well as an in-person callback. For 4 years, you will train intensely in Dance, Singing, Acting, Styles, Ear Training, Musicianship, Historically Informed Performance Practice, and Theory. The smartest, finest triple threat performers in Canada have graduated from this school. In semesters 6 through 8, students get to specialize in 1 of 3 streams: Writing for Musical Theatre, Musical Theatre Production Artistic Team (Director, Music Director or Choreographer), or Commercial Artistic Development; these 3 streams broaden a performer’s perspective and introduce their students to several laboratory aspects of the Performance Industry. On top of the Musical Theatre Lab, Sheridan students, in their final year, get to workshop new musicals and originate brand new roles. Their students are the first to read the lines and the first to sing the songs. Back in 2012, The Canadian Musical Theatre Project at Sheridan created Come From Away with their students. For 24 consecutive months, you will train in Singing, Dancing, Theatre Acting, Screen Acting, Shakespeare, and Theory. In academic years 2 and 3, students get to develop and dive into the medium of Screen Acting for Film and Television. These classes host brand new techniques and skills that do not apply to the world of Theatre. The screen acting courses have allowed their students to break into the Film and Television medium alongside the Theatre. Just like Sheridan, all the professors are industry professionals working in the field. Randolph College Chief Director, Tara Young, has been working the Broadway scene for many years, choreographing over a dozen Broadway Musicals. You can find alumni performing and choreographing for the biggest stages in the world, including Broadway and The West-End. RCPA is nationally recognized as one of the strongest triple threat training scenes in the country. Although Randolph does not grant physical accreditation: in the way of a certificate, diploma or, degree, Randolph has a pathway program with Wilfred Laurier University for their students to gain a Bachelor of Music. ALSO, The top-performing arts institutes in the world consider RCPA's triple threat program to be equivalent to an undergraduate degree. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and The Guildford School of Acting offer RCPA graduates an audition for their Master of Arts Degree programs. (Diploma in Performing Arts.) Victoria, British-Columbia, CanadaThis diploma program is a strong program that trains and studies six days a week. It is a true look into the industry, with almost no days off. For two years, you will train in Acting, Movement, Dance and Voice. The College has high-standards in theatre acting: offering classes in Stage Combat, Physical Theatre, Clowning, Speech Techniques, Transition to Film, and Improvisation. Although CCPA does not hold as strong a focus on dance training, the Acting training is top-notch. CCPA has close relations and connections to the industry. Many industry professionals are invited to the school to part wisdom with the students there. CCPA students get creative mentorship in Writing, Directing, Choreography, Production, and Design. Students also experiment with Technical Theatre, with mentorship in Stage Management, Sound, Lighting, and Set Design, to learn how to navigate in relationship with all the moving parts of the Theatre. Many Alumni have been spotted on The West-End, The Stratford Festival of Canada, and Shaw and Mirvish stages, not exclusively to musicals, but plays as well. Unlike Sheridan and RCPA, The Canadian College of Performing Arts performs a year-end play alongside its year-end musical. They respect that Theatre is separate from Musical Theatre and equips its students to enter both industries! CCPA is nationally renowned as one of the top Acting institutions in Canada and sets the bar for it’s diverse Acting training.Notable Fun Fact: You can find a CCPA alumnus who has 2 Grammy Award Nominations! That’s Right! Singer/Songwriter, Carly Rae Jepsen graduated from CCPA back in the early 2000’s.
