RESUMEThis is my take on preparing a resume/CV that the recruiter won’t put in the bin after reading the first line ;)First, let’s spend a few words on two myths.MYTH 1 - TEMPLATEDo we really need a CV template? Is there a preferred template?In Europe, there is a standard template that I personally hate. A CV is a personal thing and should be tailored to suit your personality. It is like we were to go out dressed the same way. We should create our own CV template.I was able to find jobs using different templates. What really matters is presentation. The CV must address the job requirements and be tidy and easy to read. That’s all!The recruiter must be able to match the information in the job ad with your CV.MYTH 2 - CV LENGTHTwo, three pages? Same story. Who cares if you have a two or three or even longer CV if you hook the recruiter to the first line of your CV? Yes, if you manage to hook the recruiter to the first line of your CV, length does not really matter. If you are the right candidate, the recruiter will read every page of your CV. The trick is to make sure that your CV does exactly that, stick the eyes of the recruiter to your profile since reading the first line.What I found critical to success is the CV structure. This is the structure I recommend:• Personal Details• Current Position/Role• Profile• Years of Experience• Qualifications• Memberships/Accreditations• Areas of Expertise• Skills• Languages• Employment/Career History• Professional Development• Referees• Acknowledgements and DisclaimerI know it is a lot to digest. You may have an awesome resume but if you fail to communicate your expertise and fitness for the role in the letter, your CV is worthless.Writing a compelling cover letter needs a skill in copy writing that you may not have. After all, we don’t have a degree in copy writing, right? Well, we don’t need a degree in copy writing but we have to be good enough in our copy to get the recruiter’s attention on our CV.Have you a standard cover letter that you use for all applications? Yes, I did have one too. I used a pretty standard template, probably downloaded from the web, cannot recall now as it was more than a decade ago. It started like this. I graduated bla, bla, bla... I wouldn’t start a cover letter like this even if I were a graduate pursuing the first employment opportunity!The problem with a standard template is that it does not work for all the roles you could possibly apply for, even if the roles are similar. Employers may look at the same role from a different prospective. You can discover it from the job description. You must read the job description very carefully and highlight what the role requirements are and what you can offer.Do you think that the Cover Letter is about you? Yes, I thought so too. As I said before, I started my standard cover letter from the graduation, discussed my employment history and stated that I was interested in the role. Not a chance to a cover letter like this. There are so many mistakes that I will annoy you if I mention them all!The cover letter is not about you, it is about what the Employer get if they hire you! When you buy a product at the supermarket, say cornflakes, you read the label on the container saying the flavours, energy and protein intakes, quantities, etc... In other words, you look at the benefits you get for the price of the container. The Cover Letter is the label on the cornflakes container and the CV is the cornflakes inside it. If your label (Cover Letter) is not appealing, nobody will eat (Hire) you!JOB INTERVIEWIf you have made that far then you are very close to get a job offer provided you ace the job interview.I recall how shaky and unprepared I was at the beginning of my career. Unsure about the questions I was supposed to answer, what to say, what not to say. Feeling the heart beat pumping up, my hands sweaty and that sense of unknown expectation about the people I was going to meet. Trilling and intimidating at the same time.I have been in job interviews at recruitment agencies, headquarters of big companies and smaller ones, on the phone and skype. The feeling was pretty much the same. I learned from each experience, being either successful or unsuccessful. The secret is preparation. I won't be discussing about how to dress, be on time, body language, etc... All of this is important but you can find free resources on the internet that tell you to dress well, be on time and adopt an open body language. I am not here to tell you this stuff. I am here to tell you about the meat you have to cook well in advance of your job interview.1) Prepare the answers to the FAQ. I did a comprehensive research on the web and books backed by practical experience from my job interviews in Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and Australia and found a list of questions that everybody asks. I have written an answer to each question and I suggest you do the same because when you write, you are forced to think carefully about the meaning you are trying to convey, the words you use, the example you can provide and the time involved with answering the question.Here is my list:Why do you want this job (or why are you leaving your Employer)?What are your duties in your current role/company?What were your duties in company “X”?How many people have you managed?Why should we hire you?What are your technical capabilities?Can you describe what kind of projects have you worked on?What are your main strengths?What are your main weaknesses?How do you manage complex projects/situations?Are you a good team player? Give us some examples.How do you manage people? What is your style?I have actually answered these questions.2) Be prepared to talk about yourself. This seems an easy question but it is not. I was embarrassed in my very first interview. It sounds personal but it is not. It is all about your study and career path. Don’t start with I was born, bla, bla, bla... otherwise the recruiter will fall off the chair! What I do is to link my career path and experience in roles, tasks and duties similar to the ones required by the position I am interviewed for. It sounds like you have worked your ass to get where you want to be. Suggest you write a paragraph that talks about you in those terms.3) Lately, I developed a strategy that I call "Show & Tell Technique". It is amazing watching the recruiters dropping their jaws when I introduce it. By the reactions I got, this is a shot that not many, if anybody, has. In a nutshell, the Show & Tell Technique is a way to have others endorse your skills and experience. ·4) Wait a moment, you are there to answer questions but also to ASK questions. At the end of the job interview, they ask you if you have any questions. Don’t ask, will you offer me a job? How much are you going to pay me? Those are not good questions to ask, though they are the essence of the whole job application process. A positive answer will come in a few days if you have performed well. I didn’t have many questions to ask in my early job interview days. Nowadays, I have more questions to ask than answers to give! Having questions demonstrates that you have researched the company and are keen to learn more about it. Showing interest in the company is positive for your application. I ask all sort of questions from the company and team structure (if not clear from their introduction), management line, project opportunities, career path, travelling involved and training opportunities to mention the most important.5) Financial offer. Congratulation if you receive one! This could be based on a figure you discussed at the job interview being provided by the recruiter or by you at the question what is your salary expectation? Tricky and sneaky one.
