PDF Editor FAQ

What is the best way to tell someone their politics disagrees with science?

Let scientists say it.My favourite example of such a consensus statement involves the List of Worldwide Scientific Organizations that hold the position that Climate Change has been caused by human action. When one considers how economically and politically disparate the organisations and the countries they represent are, one realises that climate change is either the one conspiracy that all major enemies are supporting each other in propagating or else it’s something bigger than any state or society.Academia Chilena de Ciencias, ChileAcademia das Ciencias de Lisboa, PortugalAcademia de Why did Bengaluru and Hyderabad become favourable destinations for IT companies? What qualities do they possess which attracted IT companies?

When the government puts a lot of investments in defense research, that area tends to become a fertile ground for IT. This is how SF Bay Area [Silicon Valley] became a key place for startups and IT. Regaring silicon valley see here: (Which locations have tried successfully or otherwise to replicate Silicon Valley and how have they fared in terms of disrupting it?)Hyderabad and Bengaluru host the largest number of DRDO labs. ISRO is headquartered in Bengaluru and so is HAL and BEL — both of whom were government’s key technical organisations. These all came long before the present IT revolution. And all of this was preceded by the setup of the Tata Institute [now called IISc] a century before now, when Swami Vivekananda inspired Jamsetji Tata to setup a great technical institute.Asia’s first nobel laureate in the sciences setup his Indian Academy of Science in Bangalore and he was also the director of IISc in the 1930s.When “native Bengalureans” complain of all the IT that came “in the recent days to the pensioner’s paradise” I roll my eyes at the ignorance of “their” city’s history. Bengaluru has always been the first choice of technology location in India for over a century now. Go around the city and find its numerous scientific and technical establishments. All of these were attracted by the city’s moderate weather backed by investments in education done by the Wodeyars.Hyderabad was never as big a IT center. It had DRDO and other research labs, but smaller overall compared to Bengaluru in number of research labs. In the 1990s, Hyderabad had a strong leader in Chandrababu Naidu who brought the city a lot of IT companies and gave a competition to Bengaluru.

How does oxygen toxicity decrease the production of surfactant in lungs?

Increase oxygen tension = more number of free radicals = more damage at the cellular level.Taken from Journal of Indian Academy of Medical Sciences, 2003
