What are the good and bad neighborhoods of Albuquerque, NM?

The far North east heights has alot of good neighborhoods like Tanoan, High desert, sandia heights, north Albuquerque acres, Pepper tree and Prospectors ridge. Although good neighborhoods are not exclusive to the far Ne there are some nice parts of the north west aswell such as Taylor ranch and Paradise hills and the north valley. The far south east has Four hills. Honorable mentions include Ridge crest and Nob hill( though i think its over rated). The bad neighborhoods are mostly in the the south east and south west. The “ war zone” is along central from Juan tabo to San Mateo and surronding area also know as the International disrtict. The south valley is the worst for gang activity. The further west you go in the south the more signs and billboards you will see written in spanish. West gate is on the far SW of town somtimes called “Little Mexico”. Dishonorable mentions include Downtown, Barelas, San jose and Old town.

What’s the fastest you’ve wiped a smirk off of someone’s face?

Many years ago I worked on a ranch as a teenager. One time when I was 16 one of the other guys and I went to town. There happened to be a turkey shoot going on, so my friend and I grabbed our .22’s and headed out to the range. My 22 had been at my parents’ house and I hadn’t shot it for some time, but I was pretty confident. When we got to the shoot they had a $1 entry fee and paper targets of turkeys with bullseyes on the chest and head, with the most points possible on the head. It had a concentric bullseye with the 10 ring being about the same diameter as a .22. The targets were at 25 or 50 yards, don’t remember which, and they had a row of targets, each with a shooter, organized like a regular shooting range. When it came my turn to shoot. I shot at the head and couldn’t hit the paper! We were allowed 3 shots each round and none of mine connected. I figured someone had messed with the sights when I was out working on the ranch. The guy who was in charge of the shoot was laughing at me and saying things like maybe I should go learn how to shoot and then come back. This pissed me off. I asked my friend if i could borrow his .22, and the next round I shot at the bullseye on the chest so I could see where I was hitting the paper. I could see I was about 2″ off, but had a nice tight group, although it wasn’t in the money ring. So I paid another dollar and the next round I compensated for the 2″ and shot at the head. I won the turkey (frozen) that round. I paid another dollar and won the next round and another turkey. I was still pissed off so I paid for another round, which I also won, but the A-Hole wouldn’t give me another turkey, and also wouldn’t let me shoot anymore. His tone had changed considerably, and I said some things to him along the lines of him being a four-flusher or something like that. Anyway, I collected my two turkeys and we left. Now that I think about it, I’m still pissed off!

What is your favorite neighborhood in Albuquerque?

I have lived pretty much every where in Albuquerque at one time or another. Each area has it's advantages and disadvantages.Old Town to downtown (river to Broadway, iron to mountain). Great mix of older houses, lifts and some mixed use residences. Very close to nightlife, restaurants and entertainment. Houses tend to be smaller and on smaller lots, execpt the country club area. Price per square foot is higher, even for stuff that needs to be redone.Edo (east of Down town) mountain to bride.. these we're railroad workers housing, lots of multiple stories older houses. Some areas of Edo are kind of shetchy… some are multigenerational family “streets” where the same families have lived for years..and years.University area, on the south it's “student “ghetto” on the north facility housing. Again smaller houses, but usually larger yards. On the south past Gibson to the airport and base, most of the houses are 70–80 years old, again smaller sq ft but large yards. On the north past lomas to the freeway is stuff built in the late '40s–60s, some really nice houses ( there is a area just north of the unm golf course that was the first medical arts area and is still called “pill hill”.Most of the northeast hieghts were built from the 50’s to the 80″s. While some areas have some pretty unique feeling ( stardust skies) the houses are tract, and the neighborhoods are very suburban. The southeast hieghts ( four hills) was a golf course development based around what is now the Canyon club. The west side started in two places, the area around Atrisco off of central during the early 50’s and Paradise hills in the 60’s. Talyor Ranch came along in the early 80’s and Ventana Ranch in the 90’s.The south valley is where a lot of the heavy industry, agriculture and more rural type of development happened. The south valley remains heavily Hispanic with some of the families going back over 300 years. The north valley was primarily agriculture up to the early 70’s. The housing is a mix of everything from 400 year old Adobes to Italian style Villa's (especially along Rio Grande Blvd).I currently live in Taylor Ranch. It is easy access to most of the city, pretty laid back not a lot of sirens or fire trucks.I used to live in the North Valley, it had a rural flavor but was just 5 minutes to cottonwood. The big problem there was because we had almost an acre of land I was always doing yard work. The house was built in the early 60’s so there was quite a bit of maintenance. Even after doing a reno, we had a reconditioned 60 year old house.I also lived in the Old town area, neat place to live, but we were limited in space and yard.I grew up in the ne hieghts around Arroyo del Oso Golf course. Pretty vanilla. John Melloncamp “little pink houses” comes to mind. Really you could be anywhere, Albuquerque, Denver, Page or Rio Linda, kind of hard to tell.I also lived next to the base in several locations, I was always glad to move on. Most of the area was very transient.Right out of high school I lived in Paradise Hills, I always liked that part of the city, guess that's why I am only about a mile away now.
