PDF Editor FAQ

Have you used Madmimi or Mailchimp to manage your emails? If so, would you recommend one or the other? Looking for a reliable, inexpensive email API .

That's how I started out, until I discovered that I had what I thought were simple requirements that weren't met by one or the other.I started with MadMimi and loved it. Then I tried MailChimp. I liked it. What I really liked about MC was the conditionals: not the hability to customize the fields, which every e-marketing tool has, but the hability to customize *the content* based on the fields or segment, which very few have (MC, CakeMail, and StreamSend are the only ones I found to have that). MadMimi does not have that.[Editing on 01/07] MadMimi DOES have conditionals! The type of conditionals that let's you customize *content* as opposed to just fields it's what I'm talking about. A developer was sent the script of my interaction with customer support asking about this, and wrote to me explaining how it is done. I guess it's a brand new feature. But then, after many exchanges with MC's customer support, I figured out the following, which made it a no go for me: they do not support transactional emails. This means that if, as it is my case, you want to use it to format pretty emails on the web UI and use the API to send individual emails using that message (campaign), as in a welcome email, you can't. They claim they are not made to do that, so I don't think there's any hope they ever will. They offer a pseudo version of that, which means the content and styling of the message has to be built on your app, and sent it over their API, which totally defeats the purpose (at least for me).MadMimi is cheaper than MC.MadMimi offers localization, which MC also does, but many others do not.MadMimi offers domain customization (if you configure a CNAME entry on your DNS and pay a little extra), which means the links show your domain name instead of some odd looking string. MC does not.MadMimi offers stats on links clicked (means all links in a message are tracked for clicks). MC does not, it only tells you if the email itself was opened or not.MadMimi is built on Rails, which in my specific case I'd rather support.MadMimi's help content and customer service is crazy friendly.MadMimi's drag and drop newsletter building is fast, easy, and simple, top requirements for me since I don't have 40 hrs a week to dedicate to marketing, I need to get it done fast.SendGrid: I also use it, it is way cheaper than MM or MC. It is a solid service and I highly recommend it. However, it does not offer you the message building tools that those e-marketing services offer, it simply is a different category of service (mainly transactional email sender). I use SendGrid to mail account activation and file import results, things that I need a super high deliverability rate, and am using MadMimi to send out the pretty welcome email and other marketing emails.Just a side note: I signed up to try GetResponse and iContact and their welcome email went directly to my spam box. :O
