PDF Editor FAQ

Why are some capitalized letters just bigger versions of their lowercase counterpart while others look completely different?

There’s a do-it-yourself history experiment that answers in seconds what would take words an essay to convey.Take out a piece of paper and a pen.Write out the alphabet - in all caps - as fast as you possibly can.If you do this, you’ll know the answer by around K.If, however, for whatever reason, you lack paper, pen, and writing surface at the moment, then what would happen if you were in possession of those things is something like this, mutilated by yours truly:I can already hear your screams as I write this. Most likely, though, yours will look similar. If you were to write more carefully and deliberately, capital letters are perfectly serviceable. Writing as quickly as I did here, on the other hand, brings you unintelligible squiggles. Now, not all the letters are that bad. The E is horrendous, the X is an asterisk, and the I is an hourglass, but the MNOP sequence is noticeably okay, and so are the C, Z, K, etc. What you’ll notice, especially if you did this exercise yourself, is that the letters that turned out better are the ones whose lowercase forms are closer to the uppercase, and the ones that look like artistic interpretations of profanity have distinct lowercase forms. Here’s my speed-alphabet again, but in lowercase this time:The x is still awkward, and my k is skinnier than I’d like it to be, but on the whole this is infinitely neater. Yet I spent no more time or effort writing it than I did the all-caps version. One of the main reasons for this neatness is that the lowercase alphabet is designed for a lack of pen-lifting. It’s much quicker to write without lifting the pen from the paper, which I’ve done for both upper- and lowercase forms here, so a fast, shorthandy form of the uppercase must be optimized for constant pen-paper contact. This is exactly how lowercase letters developed in the first place: scribes had to write quickly, so they needed to develop such a variant of normal, capital letters. These forms were originally called “minuscules”, the most famous being the Carolingian minuscule of Charlemagne, which our modern lowercase letters developed from. (For a brief history of this process, see my answer on lowercase letters and the history of “I” here.)Lowercase letters were, in other words, originally just a faster way of writing capital letters. The two systems remained separate for hundreds of years, only beginning to intertwine when capital letters started becoming, well, capital (from Latin caput, “head”) letters: uppercase letters used at the start, or “head”, of a page - and, later, at the head of a sentence, to distinguish the start of a new sentence. From there, it was only a short leap to indicating important nouns, and then you’ve got the system we have today. To answer your question, the capitalized letters that are “just bigger versions of their lowercase counterparts” are those letters that are just as easy to write big and slow as they are to write small and fast, like C and Z and O and V; the others that look completely different are those that are difficult to write quickly in uppercase, like E and R and…well, X has more pressing problems, don’t you think?I’ve mentioned this before on another answer, but it’s an excellent fact so I’m going to mention it again. When the printing press rolled around, the individual letters would be held in boxes along shelves for the typesetters to grab and arrange as needed, then lock in place, cover in ink, and stamp on to paper to make a page. The arrangement of letter-boxes along the shelves was specific and intentional. The smaller letters were more common, so the boxes that held the smaller letters were placed on the bottom for the typesetters’ ease of access; the capital letters were less common, so their boxes went along the top.Hence their names: lower-case and upper-case letters.

What is the meaning behind "5 Centimetres Per Second"?

This movie does not have a clear ending, makoto shinkai made it that way. You can take example of interstellar and inception, both movies are open for interpretation of viewers at the end.Same is for 5 cm per second, I will tell you how I interpreted the ending, according to me they were destined not to be with each other, from the starting the universe acted against them, in 1st part when Takaki was going to meet Akari, he wrote everything he wants to tell Akari in that letter but it was lost as it flew with the wind when Takaki was trying to take wallet/money out of his pocket. On the other hand Akari also wrote a letter for Takaki but was unable to give to him knowing that it could be last time ever they were seeing each other in person. The 3rd episode is devastating, it's so sad, when the song hits , Shinkai tried to show us the important moments while growing up of both Takaki and Akari. They wrote each other in the beginning but suddenly we see that letters stopped arriving in the Letter box, either it was a mistake by post office or they gave up on writing letters.According to me they both understood they were not meant to be together no Matter How hard they try the universe will always act against them. The last scene where Takaki and Akari are cross each other at railway crossing is one of the most powerful scenes in movie history. We as viewers imagine so many scenarios at that very moment, what if they had looked at each other? Would they have been together then? Would Akari leave his husband for Takaki? Will Takaki ever be happy? So many questions in that moment of time. That's the beauty of this movie, Makoto Shinkai made a masterpiece for us, we can relate this movie to our daily lives that's why it is special.Hope you liked my point of view.

How likely is a UK General Election in 2018? Is it possible the government will collapse before the Brexit process is complete?

An election is unlikely in 2018. But could happen before 29 March 2019. And certainly during any Brexit transitional period.Using history as a guide, Theresa May’s government is unlikely to last beyond June 2020. A string of by-elections defeats; poorly handled relations with Northern Ireland politicians or parliamentary defections could lead to defeat in a parliamentary confidence vote. And that’s assuming Brexit isn’t troublesome.A sequence of politcal events similar to the Poll Tax should not be ruled out. When bills dropped through letter boxes, social unrest followed. If Brexit leads to disrupted food supplies or widespread job losses, voters will want to see action, preferably accompanied by the prime minister’s departure.Margaret Thatcher was elected on a 1987 mandate to introduce the Poll Tax. Within 5 years, both she and the Poll Tax were gone. Mrs May and Brexit could also follow a similar politcal fate.
