Actually one of the reasons I got terminated from my previous company is because i told them that i wont hand over my passport. I am a computer engineer and used to work for Etisalat as a contractor. The contracting company asked each one of us to hand over the passport. Actually we had a clause in the employment contract that says that you need to handover the passport and it will be for safe keeping with the company. And I had signed it when I joined. Somehow one day I got pissed of and told my HR manager of contracting company by mail that i will not be handing over my passport. This pissed him off and he called my then manager and told him about this. He then sent me a mail asking me to handover the passport as required . Next day the HR again sent me a mail asking me to handover the passport. This time again I said I will not hand it over. They got fired up and my manager send me a suspension letter until the matter is sorted out. Next day i went to my contracting office had a big debate with HR and company CEO on the issue of keeping an employee passport for safe keeping. Though they clearly accepted my stand that there is no need of taking an employee passport they still declined to stay away from the rule. Willingly or non willingly I had to hand over my passport.Few months later I had another issue with my manager and this time there was no pretence they just fired me. I think the second issue was just a pretence to fire me but real issue was my non conformance to the passport Issue.Though i has struggle for 6 months to get another job , I did not have to hand over my passport to any company for safekeeping after that.I always believed a passport holder is the sole owner of the passport other than the issuing country.Nobody else has the right to keep it without permission.If some company asks you to handover the passport say it cleary and nicely that you intend to keep the passport to urself and dont wish to hand it over. If they keep pushing you just deny the offer and look for something better.No real UAE company worth on paper asks to hand over your passport. This is applicable to good private as well as public companies of UAE.Note-: I recently met some of my collegues from old company and they told me they still take the passports of employees. I just hope somebody teach them a lesson.

Whether it is in UAE or any other country, its always wrong to mail anyone without their permission. However if you are reaching out to any individual with a persuasive and no nonsense email than their is no harm.I managed to get appointment with C-suite executive of Etisalat and many other big organizations through cold email and even win big projects. While emailing, I make sure that I am not wasting the time of reader.
