No.The authors of any paper should be the complete set of people who made significant intellectual contributions to the paper (or more precisely, to the research described in the paper). Denying authorship to anyone who made a significant intellectual contributions to the paper is unethical. (Symmetrically, offering authorship to anyone who did not make a significant intellectual contributions to the paper is unethical.)Whether the people involved are professor and research assistant is utterly irrelevant.

Pity you didn’t have the courage to put your name to this question, but I guess that’s just too much to ask when it comes to ones religious convictions, huh?Q: What kind of information in the Quran would have convinced atheists that the Quran indeed is directly from Allah?Basically, the same exact sort of information that would convince a faithful Muslim that, say, the Hindu Vedas or the Zoroastrian Avesta is just chock-full of impossibly accurate scientific information that couldn’t possibly have been known to the people living at the time those ancient books were written unless the information was provided by an omniscient being.Interestingly enough, of course, none of the believers in the divine authorship of any of these books (including the Qur’an and the Christian Bible) have ever managed to come up with the correct interpretation on any of these supposedly “impossible scientifically accurate” passages in their books until after secular science has made the discovery in question. It’s always the case that science makes a discovery and then somebody goes back and looks for passages that can kind of, sort of, almost be twisted to have something to do with the discovery if you squint hard enough and ignore the plain language (as well as ignoring other passages that clearly contradict known science).And yet, that doesn’t stop Christians from claiming that the Bible must be of divine authorship because it contains impossibly accurate scientific information, Hindus from claiming that the Vedas must be of divine authorship because they contain impossibly accurate scientific information, Zoroastrians from claiming that the Avesta must be of divine authorship because it contains impossibly accurate scientific information and, yes, Muslims from claiming that the Qur’an must be of divine authorship because it contains impossibly accurate scientific information.We atheists just acknowledge that all of these religions are guilty of the same exact thing and that none of these holy books contain any sort of information that would somehow prove divine authorship. So before worrying about convincing atheists that your particular book really does contain information that would somehow prove divine authorship, why not spend some time convincing Christians, Hindus and Zoroastrians that their books do not really contain information that prove divine authorship. And then, once you all agree on which is the one book that clearly must have divine authorship, come back and we’ll have a little chat.Until then, though, I’m afraid you are just farting in the wind for all the good you will ever accomplish.

You are a freshman. This is not worth fighting over.Fighting for authorship is a stressful process, and at this stage of your career, your professor's goodwill and letter of reference is worth far more than a higher place on the author list. Would you rather he see you as a second author who contributed above and beyond, or a first author who might not have done as much as the authorship ordering reflects?If I were you I'd focus on your classes, and securing a second letter of reference from another professor. You need three letters, and maybe the next guy will make you the first author.
