Background: I launched one of the first online newspapers in 1995 and later worked at washingtonpost.com.No.The fundamental problem with newspapers is disaggregation. Newspapers were the Internet before the Internet existed. (See Rich Skrenta's great post on this: http://www.skrenta.com/2009/03/the_news_medium_has_a_message.html) They took a lot of disparate content from different sources, bundled them together and delivered them in an economical package. Geography served as the common bond and as a proxy for interests.Now you can get much of the content that was in newspapers available online. You can get it more immediately, more personalized and if you so desire, you can get higher quality content. Many of the content providers for the newspaper industry have cut out the middleman. A few examples:Comics. Readers can get comics directly from the syndicates. I get my Dilbert delivered to me every day by email. Unlike in the newspaper, it's in color every day.National and international stories. Many papers buy these from the likes of the New York Times and Washington Post. Then they chop them up and run them, sometimes a few days later. Online, that content is a click away.Stock quotes. There are plenty of stock portfolio services out there, including from your brokerage which give you up to the second personalized information.TV listings. Ditto.Sports. You can dig into every detail on sites like ESPN, chat with sports fans on player-centric sites. If your team happens to be outside of where you live, you're SOL with the newspaper. Many people are extremely passionate about sports and the Internet addresses deep passions in a way that no other technology before it ever could.News sources. Many of the experts that newspapers quote (because newspapers generally don't have experts of their own) have their own presences online. Want to know what Robert Reich or Greg Mankiw has to say about an economic topic? Get it straight from the horse's mouth, rather than reading a two sentence summary that may or may not accurately reflect the view.On the advertising side, there are so many better ways to reach people who are in market vs. trying to use news interest to reach people. Want to reach serious car buyers? Edmunds, AOL Autos, Kelly Blue Book, etc. Home buyers? Zillow, Trulia. Job seekers? LinkedIn, Monster, Career Builder. Those three segments represented the lion's share of newspaper classified advertising revenue. The newspaper industry has actually benefited from the fact that the advertiser's in that space, by and large, have been dragged into the online world kicking and screaming. Otherwise that business would have died 5 years ago.Display advertising has also suffered. M&A is a part of this. Department stores, banks, airlines... all big advertisers have gone through a lot of consolidation over the last decade. It's easier for them to buy mass reach in other media than to deal with a bunch of papers with an ever declining circulation base.There are a bunch more structural reasons. It's very clear what they're trying to do: turn back the clock to 1995.Many in newspaper leadership believe in the "original sin": that newspapers screwed by not charging for content when the Internet first came into being. (Never mind that many, including the one I worked at, tried to and it didn't work.) They're determined to not suffer that fate again.These iPad apps come pretty damn close to getting a poorly produced PDF version of the day's paper. Instead of looking to the future, they're looking to the past. The primary people I can see buying this sort of product are the 50-70 year olds who buy print papers. I don't know how big the intersection of that audience and iPad owners is, but I'd guess not very big. At any rate, it's a dying audience.The future of news will be social, personal, user generated and free. Aside from a few token attempts (e.g. tweet this story), these apps don't address any of these themes.The best app I've seen so far for news consumption isFlipboard.
