Close pending issues etc.

I mean, the rules are different from prison to prison, but generally from my experience inmates are allowed up to 5 - 10 magazines as part of their personal property and comic books would be counted as such.Things like graphic novels and manga would be considered books.If comics/graphic novels/manga are sent directly from a publisher or bookseller (like Amazon) than they’ll get in no problem. Most prisons allow hard or soft cover books to get in this way. I had a subscription to a few comics through D.C. and Marvel while I was inside and they arrived each month without issue.One thing I did notice, especially with the manga, is sometimes things get rejected because they depict things like sex, nudity, etc. but I found since it was all drawings they let 99% of things through.Now at some prisons, especially lower security level ones, they will also allow soft cover books and magazines to be sent directly from someone as long as it was kept at 5 per package.But my friend devised a scheme where his sister made up a fake outside bookseller, called Wise Owl Books, printed up fake address labels & invoices and it worked every time. She was able to send him whatever and it came right through.It’s also worth noting there’s a very popular catalog bookseller called Edward R. Hamilton that is very popular in prison. I swear that must be 80% of their business. Whenever a new catalog came out during mail call the office would hand out at least 50 catalogs to people in the unit.Everyone I knew had more than 5 books, magazines, etc. Some people had crazy amounts. Me and my friends were among those. The things was, at the place I was they didn’t really enforce the personal property rules so long as you kept everything out of sight and passed the inspections.So as a result we all had at least 50+ books and many more magazines. We had entire series of manga. We literally had one series with 37 volumes and we had them all. We also played D&D and had about 20 books for that.This isn’t the case with a lot of places and some COs are dicks, but at this place they didn’t sweat us on stuff like that because they wanted to maintain a laid back environment. Also, we had no AC in the housing units and this was in Virginia so the Summer’s were miserable. I think them not sweating us on a lot of stuff was the counter balance to the fact we suffered every Summer.

First job — receive the books from the supplier, called a jobber. Open the boxes, check the contents against the invoice. Are all the titles listed on the invoice in the box? Are there any extra, unordered items? Are they as described on the order?Second job — evaluate the books. Are they cased correctly? (This means are the pages between the covers right side up or upside down? Yes, this happens.). Are the pages of the book cut loose or are they still attached at their end so that they cannot be opened? Is the binding sound? Sort the books into three piles — books are fine, send them to processing; books need repair, but we will do it in-house (by ourselves); books need to be returned to the jobber. Assign a accessions number to the books being kept. Box up the books to be returned and ship them back. Send the books to be repaired to your repair people.Third job — get the books to the cataloger who will assign the call number and create a main entry card. (Often, with comupter cataloging this is done by the jobber. However, the cataloging must be checked against the library's authority file.)As the cards or computer entries are being created, the book will need to be covered, usually with a clear coat so that the paper jacket can be seen. It will also need to be stamped for ownership, its secret page marked, the catalog number added to the title page, and a barcode and catalog number label added.Fourth job — put the completed books on a cart and have them either added directly to their proper place on the shelves, or added to a display of new arrivals.Where there is a big, rich library, this happends using many people. In my library this was done by me, my library technician, and student aides!
