I flunked high school and I don’t have a higher education.This, despite always scoring fairly high on tests that measure intelligence—whenever they were given in my school in Jerusalem.The reason is that I’ve never been able to force myself to study subjects—or anything in particular—I am not interested in. So in school, for instance, in literature, English and computer programming I got something close to the maximum score, while that in maths and Hebrew I scored very little.I ended up going to night classes while working in the day to obtain a high school diploma. At 18, I was the youngest person there—the rest were in their late twenties or early thirties.After I came back from my first trip to India I enrolled in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and studied Indology and linguistics. I had fallen in love with the ancient culture of India, and I always loved languages.Except that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and I only went to university because I understood that it was expected of me.I dropped out after one semester. I found Sanskrit, the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, etc, all to be fascinating, but the way they were taught was fairly dry. In India, a yogi friend of mine and others would quote passages or tell stories from these scriptures in such a passionate and wondrous way so that they really came alive. In the university, it was dry and drab; lifeless and boring; academic and soulless.Had I been in Varanasi, a city where these traditions are very much alive, then perhaps I would have lasted longer. But in Jerusalem?!The great irony in all of this is that for quite a few years now I have worked as an editor and translator on… academic texts, including theses! None of my clients know that I do not have a higher degree (oops, now they all will… damn you The Internet!), nor would they ask—they all get to me through recommendations or word-of-mouth, and are happy with the quality of my work. Although I’ve had a mentor help me over the years, I am almost an entirely self-taught editor and translator.So now you must be wondering… How do I feel about this? Mixed….Sometimes I regret not having a higher degree, and feel insecure about it. For instance, I am in the process of writing a literary memoir about my travels and life in India, and I wonder what to put in the bio—authors always have something that says: “Literature MFA (Masters of Fine Arts) in [insert name of prestigious university/college]”What will mine say?Also, although I have worked as a freelancer for quite a few years and have done other work that does not require a formal education, sometimes I worry about what will happen if I try finding a normal job one day—one that requires an academic background.There have been periods when I have felt inferior to, envied others for those titles after their names which society esteems so much. Especially here on Quora, where people’s credentials are awe-inspiring.But I’ve let go of that and accepted the course my life has taken.On the other hand, instead of spending those years studying, I was traveling and working and gaining valuable experiences that have helped mature me and shape me.Also, I’m always reading and learning new things.
