According to this listing Maurice Ravel's catalog is comprised of approximately 85 original compositions. However, I am not convinced that using this value (85) as an upper bound for work output of great composers is particularly telling. For instance, there have been a number of phenomenally prolific composers who have died young. Despite a feverish rate of producing masterpieces, some of these composers still left a catalog of less than 85 works.I think it would make more sense if we instead use the rate of composition (total # of works in catalog / years between the first and last entries). In fact, all of Webern's compositions, including those without opus numbers, fit on just six standard audio CDs.Another factor that I would like to emphasize is that often composers who are not prolific with their output of original works, are prolific in other areas of their musical lives. Nearly all of the names I mention below maintain(ed) international careers as conductors, in addition to writing great works. Teaching via university appointments has also become increasingly common in the twentieth century.
