Miller gets his men off the beach and we later see him talking to a colonel about another operation he led with many casualties. The colonel replied, “It was a difficult assignment, that's why you got it.” Apparently, Capt. Miller is a competent officer who has been recognized for his leadership skills. This is when he is given the mission to find Ryan and send him home. All during the search the group of soldiers is trying to guess what Miller did before the war. Finally, he tells them that he taught English Composition at a high school in a small town in Pennsylvania. Most people would not give this a second's thought but I think it tells a lot about America and the men who fought and won our wars. They leave their jobs and go off to war and then go back to teaching subject-verb agreement. Except for Captain John Miller, who rests in peace at the American Military Cemetery in Normandy, France. A fictional character in a fictional story but one that depicts a higher truth about America's fighting men from Concord Bridge to Korea and beyond.
