Oh by the way, the words mean “Hey are you there? “ of sorts.• Actually all Bengalis have a really soft corner for certain traditions and things. We all hate a fellow Bengali who has never heard the Mahalaya recitation before the Durga Puja that's aired on radio. It is a sort of commencement of the festivities and welcomes the goddess on earth. We really love a person who can do a good “dhunuchi naach” during the Durga Puja. It is an occasion in which people, especially men dance with firepots and the festive spirit makes it enjoyable and merry.• Bengalis judge young people, especially women by how much of Tagore they know. And the literature penned down by his contemporaries. I get bad marks in that because I am an ICSE board student till senior secondary school, and I was especially poor in Bengali. My sister is considered a more illustrious offspring from my generation because she always secures an A in Bengali and sings good Rabindra Sangeet.• Biharis are bad. This is extreme racism but it's prevalent even among the youngest teenagers. Yeah, your mom might be Bihari (like my mother) or the person you love might be Bihari (again, me). But you'll be sorta judged if you tell that to some random Bengali. Bihari? Naah.• You will literally find a hundred thousand Bengalis touring a thousand places all across India in the time of vacations. And not just people who can't afford an annual trip; they will save and rather skip a meal but they'll go on a trip in the Durga Puja, winter or summer holidays. And not just the mother, father and their kids; Bengalis will holiday with a huge group of relatives and friends ranging to the eldest son of the uncle of your maternal grandmother's second daughter.• It's “Pujo”, not “ Puja”; it's “Thakur”, not “ Tagore”: it's “jol khaabo”, not “ jol peebo” xD.Yeah. Say something like “roshogolla (and not rasgulla) was first made in Odisha and not Bengal” in a blue-yellow public bus in Calcutta, you're bound to attract some unwanted stares.• Old-school romance; even young Bengalis like me still love it like anything. Falling in love with a girl, writing letters to her once a month, waiting for her at a random bookstore in College Street, dates at Coffee House over chicken kabiraji and coffee,marrying her at an old mansion somewhere in northern Calcutta, her stares in a red-and-white saree with a huge belt of red sindoor on her maang a day after our marriage when I see her scurrying in the verandah; oh, Cupid's here in my room already!• Ghoti-Bangal divides. A bangal is someone from erstwhile Bangladesh who migrated to West Bengal during Partition and a ghoti is someone whose roots are in West Bengal. A ghoti will like Mohun Bagan, a bangal will like East Bengal (although nowadays the teams have a variety of supporters). A ghoti will like “chhoto maach", basically small fish caught in lakes and ponds; a bangal will love “ilish and loitte and muittha”, varieties usually found in deltas . A ghoti likes “ dal and aloo posto” on rainy days; bangals will love “khichuri (not khichdi, you'll be judged. Sorry not sorry) and papor bhaaja (not papad) “.• Shibpur-Jadavpur-St. Xavier's is the holiest trio for higher education. Engineering at Shibpur-Jadavpur? You're a prophet in your locality. Graduate from St. Xavier's? You're famous in your school and your family. Presidency Economics? You're thought to be a successor to Amartya Sen.Oh sorry medicos. xDCan't say what honour medical graduates and students from the trinity of RG Kar-NRS-CNMC have in their respective tribes.• Mohun Bagan is an emotion. The ilish maach or East Bengal is pride. Coffee House is nostalgia. Sourav Ganguly is everyone's “dada” (elder brother). Eden Gardens is Lord's and the Mecca of Bengali cricket fans. Information Technology means Sector V. Books mean College Street. Schools mean St. James, CBS, La Martiniere, QMS.What's common? A city. A city of joy. Calcutta :).Ah. There are more. We had a great time throughout classes 9 and 10. We (most of us) weren't aware of the academic pressures of plus two so this was the time when we enjoyed ourselves. This was also the time when the teachers started treating us more like adults rather than nuisances.If I am to single out an incident, I remember there was this one time in class 12, when our batch(2015) was part of some Career counselling workshop. We were given forms to fill in with details about ourselves and our ambitions. However, most of us failed to realise that it was a workshop, we thought it was a survey and we didn't appreciate having to sacrifice a valuable break time for it. (Chicken rolls trigger withdrawal symptoms: medical fact. Okay, not really.)We let our imagination run wild. One of the brightest students of our batch expressed his desire to be a Janitor, another wrote about his desire to drive, for other people. I remember writing about how I wanted to be a wizard. Bear in mind, none of us realised that these forms would actually be read. Unfortunately a friend of mine penned down a fantasy about wanting to hurl himself of a roof, triggering some panic. We were given detention but that wasn't the worst part. The counsellors actually turned up a week later and held sessions with us, reading out a form where a guy said he wanted to beg on the streets and then advising him to take up Engineering. (Not a jab at engineers.) Very professional lot.Damn, I miss school sometimes. Thanks for the A2A. :)
