What should telcos be focusing on in 5-10 years?

Telcos will remain relevant as long as they (1) have a strong distribution network both offline and online, (2) have a billing relationship with customersIn Malaysia and most developing markets, I believe telcos will be focused on maximizing the potential of Mobile Internet in the coming years. This includes:1) Playing an active part in device replacement from feature phones to smart phones with Internet capabilities2) Selling Internet access plans in a smart way to every subscriber and influencing a slower decline in voice revenues3) Developing a more cost efficient network to deliver Internet, eg. RAN customer prioritization, compression, caching, PCRF, co-location, CDNsThe longer term of 5-10 years will require telcos to be focused on bridging the services gap which they are losing a grip of through the emergence of OTT players. Some thoughts:1) Scale - telcos need to leverage scale within their groups. For instance, the Telenor group spans across 13 countries with a cumulative subscriber base of over 130million. Group scale allows more negotiation power with OTT players in finding ways to bundle their services for differentiation2) "Productifying" APIs - telcos need to make it easier for third-party developers to work directly with them to build apps and services. In addition, operator billing relationships with major app platforms will continue to be relevant due to its ease of use and trust among customers3) Organization setup - telcos need to consider making their organizations more relevant as software leads the changes in the world. Most telcos are resellers of someone elses technology (eg Ericsson, Huawei) and have been slow at developing or cultivating software innovations. Proactive telcos will take an early position now to start building services as an alternative to OTT services. This requires the right (web) mindset and hiring the right people

How do Ooyala and Brightcove compare?

Disclaimer: I'm a co-founder and employee of Ooyala. Both Kaltura and Brightcove have good products that are actively used by hundreds and in some cases thousands of video publishers. To round out the trifecta of competitors, ThePlatform (Owned by Comcast) also has a suite of services that are used by many of the big broadcasters to deliver their video content. Each solution is different and each vendor caters to different parts of the market. If you're looking for a video solution, here are a couple of questions that you should ask the vendors before making a decision:1. Can they handle your scale? (Not all video technology solutions were created for scale. For example, a video solution that has never managed hundreds of thousands of assets probably doesn't offer pagination in their API calls.)2. Do you need scale? (For most publishers, YouTube is a perfectly acceptable solution to publish and deliver video.)3. How many active installs/deployments do they have? What do they consider "active?"4. How many relevant installs do they have? (Your business may have unique needs that the vendor has never faced.)5. How open and modular is the solution? What are some of the examples where publishers have built interesting solutions by leveraging the vendors' modules?6. How large is the developer community? How active is the developer community? (I'll pick on Kaltura a little here, their top contributors to the community are all Kaltura employees -http://www.kaltura.org/userpoints/list/all - and the exchange only has 33 modules that have been created: http://exchange.kaltura.com/)7. Does analytics work for all forms of video - on-demand and live?8. How often is the analytics data refreshed? How granular is it - video-level, account-level, user-level...?9. How does the company manage support? Where is the support team located?10. Does the vendor have relevant customer references?11. Is self-hosting supported? If so, does it impact version upgrades when a new version of the video solution is released?12. What ad networks are supported out of the box?13. What content management system plug-ins are supported out of the box?14. How easy is it to customize workflow and/or video players?15. How many and which CDNs are supported by the video solution?16. What is the viability of the company? Is the company profitable?17. How many international deployments has the company done?18. Are they going to be able to evolve are your business grows?19. Does the company have a professional services team?20. What does their product roadmap look like? Are they responding to customer requests/anticipating customer needs? This is my first Quora post. I hope it's useful for the people who stumble upon the information.

What does the average American know about Australia (excluding g'day mate)?

I thought I would chime in as a Canadian. I'm not sure if I represent the average Cdn because I've always had a fascination with Australia. I can say that many Cdns want to travel to NZ and Australia. The people who actually *have* travelled there absolutely loved it.So, what do I think I know about Australia:1) Australia is a large island and continent. This is actually really pushed in our schools for some reason. We would lose marks if we didn't make this distinction.2) You have large scary spiders who aren't poisonous but do inhabit your houses.Personally, I'm with the other poster and can't get over the large size of the spiders. Also, don't some of your spiders fly?!3) Australia has many deadly creatures who could easily kill you4) Australia is part of the Commonwealth so we automatically feel a connection to you5) I think Australia has a warmer relationship with the Monarchy then we do.There's actually a good percentage of Cdns who are pretty blase about the royals. I know you had a referendum about removing the Queen but it failed and now Australians seem warmer to the family. We were really interested in this vote as another Commonwealth country.6) Australia is ridiculously hotThis is by Cdn standards. Most Cdns I know wonder if we could handle the heat.7) Australia has the Great Barrier Reef which frankly looks amazing8) Australians seem to be just as outdoorsy as we areThis makes us love you.9) Australia is very similar to CanadaI'm not sure if this is a compliment or insult to you.10) Australia has an uneasy relationship with their First Nations people just like Canada11) Australia has some amazingly unique animals12) Australians use the word c*nt quite often for their friends?13) Australians are far more outgoing and speak their mind more than Canadians14) Kangaroos are seen as pests in Australia. I think this is also the case with koalas?15) Your 20 something year olds love to travel to Banff and generally the mountains to work and play.16) We tend to love your Australian accent17) You have a great relationship with NZ where you two take the piss out of each other but will stick up for each otherNZ and Australia have a long history of fighting beside each other in the World Wars and is acknowledge through ANZAC ceremonies.18) Australians fought and suffered beside us in Afghanistan and in the World wars. Many Canadians see Australia and NZ as long time friends and allies19) Australia has the opposite seasons to us20) Most Australians live near the coastal areas rather than the interior?21) You can see some completely different stars in Australia like the Southern Cross (which is on your flag)22) Australia and Canada both have the Westminster style of gov't23) Your Prime Minister likes to call us CanadiaMost of us find this very funny24) One of your police departments likes to pick on NicklebackAgain, most of us find this funnyI'm sure I'm off on a couple of these but would love to hear the truth.
