How did your marriage end?

Knowing that your spouse is aging is one thing. Finding out that you are going to lose them very soon is something else all together.Years ago after viewing some very painful times with family members who eventually passed on. We decided that heroic means was not what we wanted. So we both got D.N.R.s this basically means we didn’t want to be saved with broken ribs and other issues if we stopped breathing or our heart stopped. We study this for quite a while before forming our opinions. The research we did concluded that if you stop breathing and your heart stops at home you have a 15% survival rate with usually several injuries when CPR is performed. In a hospital it raises to 17% survival. At an assisted living facility it is only 2%. And in all of these situations you get the usual injuries. Sorry this is not our idea of quality of life.In January of 2018; I noticed some small changes in my wonderful husband. He wasn’t as steady on his feet. He got confused driving to places we had been many times before. Sometimes he couldn’t find the words he wanted to use.In March he started having trouble with his speech and he was slurring his words. We went to the doctor – I was quite concerned. At the time my husband was complaining about his very bad allergies. So we only got allergy medication. His doctor had some difficulty understanding him but the doctor didn’t seem too concerned with his slurring his words. He had also turned the big 80.Several people including myself tried to getting him to go to the doctor and get checked for a stroke in March. He would have none of it. According to him; he was fine.I started sending daily text messages to our very large family with updates of how he was doing. On April 3rd,2018He had a seizure while I wasn’t at home. He called me & I couldn’t understand him. I rushed home. He had recovered a bit by the time I got there and he didn’t want to go the hospital. So his body decided to have another seizure so I got to see what was happening. Finally I was able to convince him that we needed to go to the hospital.Once he was in the emergency room; he had another seizure. He thought that he was just been having strokes. The hospital admitted him. He spent the next six days in the hospital.Tests were run and it was first discovered that there was a mass on the left side of his brain which they said caused the seizures and the slurred speech. This mass was also affecting his balance, speech, swallowing and other functions. The day before they were going to do a biopsy on the mass on his brain they ran some other tests with contrast. It was then discovered that along with the mass in his brain they discovered 3 smaller spots on his brain. There was also a mass on his right lung. And he had a bunch of little masses on his liver. It was determined at this point not to do the biopsy on his brain. We have had DNRs for a number of years. On the 9th a biopsy was done on the right lung as it would be less invasive. We were sent home late that evening. Post hospital appointment with his primary care on the 18th. He had a follow up appointment with the oncologist for the 23rd.On the 12th we had to go see his primary care doctor at 7:30 A.M. He was having some major issues with swallowing. His choking was horrible. We were informed by his primary care doctor that he had Stage Four Non Small Cell Carcinoma. We never figured out where the cancer had started. The doctor prescribed some medication for the choking & we went home.At first things went fairly well. He was fairly mobile and could take care of some of his personal needs. His speech was slurred but most of the time I could figure out what he wanted. Eye to hand coordination was getting more difficult for him.On the 16th things started to go downhill very fast. He was having trouble feeding himself & was very self-conscious about what was happening. He had been able to eat with regular silverware. And I just needed to make sure that his food was soft enough so that it did not start him choking. On the 18th; I had to take him back to the hospital. The choking had become very bad (on something as small as size of very small seed – no I wasn’t feeding him seeds). At times he felt like he was being smothered. We were in the ER when an ER doctor came in to speak with us. I was surprised when she asked him if he CODED could they try to bring him back. He was very confused. I invited her into the hall. I asked if she what she didn’t understand about a DNR and requested another doctor. We only stayed overnight. We requested hospice care at home. Hospice was wonderful. We saw them at the hospital on the 19th & later that evening at home.On the 20th , hospice came by and did vitals. They made a treatment plan. Nurses would visit on two days per week. A Certified Nursing Assistant would visit on the opposite days (to help him bath and shave.) We also received a toilet chair riser to help with bathroom needs and a couple of benches for the tub so it would be easier to bathe him.On the 21st his 1970 F100 pickup truck finally came home with just the cab portion. It had been gone for a very long time (2 years). He was so pleased to see it. The paint colors he chose were beautiful. He also finally started using the walker this day. He agreed to use the walker to get around as his stability was not what it used to be. He was finally afraid of falling.By the 23rd we did not get to the oncologist appointment. He was getting very weak. He was eating with a “SPORK” this is a combination spoon & fork in the morning. By noon he had switched to a syringe. I was grinding up his pills & putting them in applesauce due to the swallowing issues. However; by mid afternoon he couldn’t swallow his medications and we were losing over fifty percent of the medication. Hospice switched him to liquid morphine. They also ordered a transport chair. We were now using syringes for food and water with thickener so he had an easier time swallowing. On the 24th we had dear friends drop by. He just had to show them his truck. It took about 45 minutes to get from the house to the garage with measured rest stops along the way. Once in the garage we all rested for at least 30 minutes before trying to get back in the house. He was so tired. It took all three of us to get him to the door way and then the transport chair arrived. He was becoming harder and harder to understand and it frustrated him. He had had a wonderful vocabulary and was so bright. He could design so many different things and then construct them. When we ran into issues where we couldn’t find parts for our old vehicles – he would construct the replacements and they worked. On the 25th , in the evening I took him with his transport chair to his recliner in the great room. At 8 PM he was ready for bed. I tried to get him up and into the transport chair for two hours. Finally I called hospice and they told me to call the fire department. The fire department crew was wonderful. They got him into the chair, into the bathroom and then into to bed. He was waking up every 2 to 2 ½ hours so I’m not getting much sleep during this time.26th now every day brought new challenges. The things that were working the day before might not still be working when he woke up. Cognitive function is rapidly declining. His eye hand coordination was way off. Hospice has ordered a hospital bed so he would be more comfortable. They also ordered a lift to save my back. It all arrived that afternoon. He slept through the installation of the bed and the fellow who put it together was not quiet. I tried to use regular sheets on the hospital bed. They looked really great until you tried to use the electric controls then the sheet came all apart. The delivery guy couldn’t explain how to use the lift. He told me to ask the hospice nurses.27th , that morning was exciting. First thing, I gave him so blended peaches in the syringe with thicker and also some water. Then I transported him to the bathroom on the transport chair. He said he did not need help so I left him in the bathroom. I changed laundry loads and then was emptying the dishwasher. I heard a distressed call so I ran to the bathroom. He had taken out the toilet chair risers’ plastic parts. Somehow he had both of his legs in the frame work on either side of the toilet. It took awhile to get him untangled. When he was done; he was tired so I put him back to the regular bed. He fell asleep instantly. A few minutes later; a friend dropped by with hospital bed sheets and a wonderful salad. I went and made the hospital bed up with a fitted sheet and a flat sheet. He was still asleep while I was doing that.I went to eat my salad (my breakfast and lunch). Monica; one of his hospice nurses dropped by to do his vitals and check on me. I told Monica about our morning adventure. We went to the bedroom to check on him and he was not in the bed. We found him in the bathroom. He had walked there without the transport chair or the walker. He wanted a ride back to bed. We got him back in bed and he fell asleep. His oxygen levels were at 65. Monica ordered oxygen to be delivered today. She also ordered a suction machine. I was using wash clothes to clear the mucus from his mouth quite frequently.Monica left about 1 PM. Ashley the CNA arrived about 1:30 PM. Eddie was very tired so she shampooed his hair and gave him a bath in bed. She also shaved his face. Then she moved him to the hospital bed.Just before Ashley left; some of our immediate family from out of town arrived. He was sleeping so we went to another room close by to talk. While we were talking; he started choking. Our daughter gave him some thickened water when he asked for it. And the choking continued. We raised the head of the hospital bed and propped him with pillows. He was still choking. We put the bed completely down and tried him on his left side – no change. Finally when he was on his right side he gave us the thumbs up sign. His breathing did not sound good and there were not any oxygen sounds from his right lung.I called hospice; his nurse Shelly arrived. She checked his vitals. His oxygen levels were at 60, which was considered very bad by the hospice nurses. You cannot think when your oxygen levels are that low. The oxygen and the suction machines arrived just in time. His nurse was mucus adverse so I took over with the suction machine. She took care of the oxygen. He still wasn’t doing well and it was determined that I could no longer take care of him at home. Shelly called the ambulance. They arrived right around 7:30 PM. By 8:30 PM he was at the hospice facility.Another family member arrived. We just followed the ambulance to the facility. After they got him fixed up in a room we were allowed to see him. He seemed a little stressed but as time went by he started to act like he felt a bit better. My family took me home and one of our sons stayed with him overnight so he wouldn’t be alone. The 28th , this entire time I had been sending daily text messages to our very large family. I had been urging everyone to come for visit as I had noticed the daily changes. Some visited before he got real bad. Others just made it in time to say good bye. He held on long enough to say good bye to everyone one who wanted to see him. This included a brother who had to drive all the way in from Phoenix, Arizona. His brother and sister in law arrived about an hour and a half before he passed away.In the end, our daughter and I were stroking his head. Our daughter in law was counting breathes. She spoke up and said he was down to five breathes per minute. Then he went to three breathes per minute. In his last breath he mouthed “I love you” and he was gone.I posted my final messages to our family “He is gone” April 28th, 2018 at 8:45 PM.Things are going okay now. It has been 19 days since his passing. I do miss him. We had a Celebration of Life on the 12th of May 2018. He lived a remarkable life.

I have shared my knowledge and reference from the other websites.each one of them is unique and these are proud monuments of India. welcome to the mysteries of India.I have given 4 best mysteries they are:1. The Konark Sun Temple, odissa2. Brihadeeswara Temple, Tanjore, Tamilnadu,3.Kailasa Temple Engineering Marvel Of India’s Master Builders4. Temples of Mahabalipuram – Chennai , TamilnaduHope you will read till the end to enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!! welcome and share your comment.1. The Konark Sun Temple, odissaThe construct is also hiding much numerical mysticism connected to time. The sun defines time by its passage across the sky. The carriage has 24 wheels for the lunar phases according to Indian tradition. And the wheels as such are miracles. They have 8 spokes, symbolizing the 8 periods of a day as was traditional in old India. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has also featured on various list of Seven Wonders of India. The temple is 35 km from Puri and 65 km from Bhubaneswar. It took 16 years to built the sun temple and it was made of black granite and black pagoda. The temple has earned the pride of being one of the World Heritage Sites in the world. This is due to the unique architectural style of the temple, which is completely made out of stone and comprises fine stone carvings. The entire structure, resembling a colossal chariot with 12 pairs of wheels, lavishly sculpted with symbolic motifs and pulled by seven horses, was so designed to let the first rays of the sun fall on the main entrance, say experts. The main attraction of the temple is its twelve pairs of wheels located at the base of the temple. These wheels are not ordinary wheels but tell time as well – the spokes of the wheels create a sundial.SourceHindufaqsOne can calculate the precise time of the day by just looking at the shadow cast by these spokes. The Science behind the Construction.A heavy magnet was placed at the temple top and every two stones of the temple is sandwiched by iron plates. The idol was said to have been floating in air due to the arrangement of magnets.SourcepinimgThe unique arrangement of the main magnet along with the other magnets caused the main idol of the temple to float in air.Stories Which Remain As Legends With No AnswersThe temple had iron beams between the stones and a central magnet which held the beams in place. Later the loadstone was removed during the Portuguese period since it was disturbing the compasses and ships running aground. The other stones/beams held in alignment by magnetic force till now, crashed regularly to bring the destruction.Statue of sun god at Konarak sun temple,Konarak,Orissa,India World HeritageThe main pratima (idol) was believed to be floating in the air because of the unique arrangements of the main magnets and other series of magnets. When the balance was disturbed, it was shattered in the absence of binding forces. The placement of the temple had been aligned in a way that the first rays of the sun falling on the coast would pass through the Nata Mandir and would reflect from the diamond placed at the centre of this idol in the main sanctum. This phenomenon would last for a couple of minutes in the early morning. An 1838 painting by FergussonLocal legends say that the huge 12 chariot wheels have been designed as sun dials to find time accurate to 1.5 minutes. To calculate this, one must place a long stick at an axis parallel to ground and note where the shadow falls. The distance between two wider spokes is of three hours (180 minutes). This is subdivided by the thinner spoke into 90 minutes. This is subdivided by 30 beads in the rim into three minutes. Depending on where the shadow falls in the bead, it can be refined to 1.5 minutes. Also, for each month, a particular wheel needs to be selected. Even the modern day sun dials have sidereal corrections to cover lateral movement of sun over seasons and its efficacy still remains a myth.Iron BeamsThere was an advanced smelting foundry for casting iron beams, which interspersed stone beams and boulders to bear loadMadala Panji – the chronicle of Puri Jagannath Temple started by Anandavarma Chodagangadev (1078-1150), and also talks about some of the events of the Sun Temple.Researchers have painstakingly collated this palm script manual with 23 leaves written in Karani script in Old Oriya. This details the temple plan, full view diagrams and cross sections. These are the only visual clues to the original state of the temple as it stood in the 16th century.courtesy :- The Many Mysteries Of The Konark Sun Temple,by Sivasankar Babu - Jul 14, 2018, 2:41 pmKONARK WHEELSun Temple of Konark is renowned throughout the world for its stone sculptures. The temple was designed in the shape of a huge chariot drawn by 7 mighty spirited horses on 12 pairs (total 24 wheels) of gorgeously decorated wheels at its base. The size of the wheel is of 9 feet 9 inches in diameter and each one of them having 8 wider spokes and 8 thinner spokes.Out of these 24 wheels 6 are in either side of the main temple, 4 wheels are on each side of the Mukhasala and 2 wheels on each side of steps at eastern front. The huge wheels of the Konark Temple are one of the major attractions for visitors.Various theories have been advocated regarding the significance of Konark wheel. According to some, the 7 horses represent the days of the week and the 12 pairs of wheels represent the 12 months of the year and the 24 wheels signifies 24 hours of a day and the 8 major spokes signifies prahars (three hour period) of a day. According to others, the wheels of the chariot have been interpreted as the 'Wheel of Life'. They portray the cycle of creation, preservation and achievement of realisation. These 12 pairs of wheels may also possibly represent the 12 zodiac signs. Some also believe that the Wheel of Konark is the same as the Dharmachakra of the Buddhists - The Wheel of Karma, The Wheel of the Law.out of these 24 wheels, 2 wheels will show you the time accurately from sun rise to sun set. In the wheel and you put your finger at centre of the axel and along with other tourists was surprised that the finger's shadow showed the precise time of the day. It's difficult to explain the technique in writing so I created following images based on his explanation. The Konark wheel has 8 wider spokes and 8 thinner spokes. The distance between two wider spokes is of 3 hours (180 minutes). The thinner spoke between two wider spokes is of 1.5 hours (90 minutes). There are 30 beads between one wider spoke to the next thinner spoke and each bead represents 3 minutes. The Sun dial shows time in anti-clockwise and the top centre wider spoke represents 12 o' clock midnight.courtesy :- Konark Wheel, Konark Temple Wheel, Wheel of Konark, Konark Sun Dial_______________________________________some of the other pictures2. Brihadeeswara Temple, Tanjore, Tamilnadu,Thanjavur Brihadeeswara temple is one of the most ancient temple, situated in the city of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, India. Thanjavur named after the legendry asura "Tanjan", is one of the ancient temples in India. In ancient days, Thanjavur known as “The rice bowl of Tamil Nadu,” was an important city to the ancient Cholas. It was remade by the Cholas from a collection of villages into a major temple center 1000 years ago, with the construction of the Brihadisvara Temple in the center of the city, and the city then built up around it.How did Cholas lift 80 tons of Granite to a 216-foot tower (Gopuram) at the Tanjore Brihadeeswarar Temple? The vimanam(temple tower) is 216 ft high. How did the cholas lift 80 tons during those days when the modern equipment a were not available? Did they use cranes or some other method to lift the kumbham?Shadow Disappears at noon: The most intersting part of this temple is the shadow of the temple, which surprisingly never falls on the ground at noon. The Brihadeshwar Temple is one of the tallest temples in the world and is so designed that the viman does not cast a shadow at noon during any part of the year.Musical pillars: At the entrance of sanctum sanctorum, one can see the two idols of Ganesha in the corridor. On taping the two, you will feel the sound traveling through stone in one idol and through metal on the other. The main hall of the temple is said to have been used by the dancers and musicians performing in service of Shiva. There are some musical pillars producing different sounds when tapped.3.Kailasa Temple Engineering Marvel Of India’s Master BuildersThe Kailasha or Kailashanatha temple is the largest monolithic rock-cut temple in the world, located in the Ellora Caves, Maharashtra, India. A megalith carved out of one single rock, it is considered one of the most remarkable cave temples in India because of its size, architecture and sculptural treatmentConstruction methodThe Kailasa Temple is notable for its vertical excavation—carvers started at the top of the original rock and excavated downward. The traditional methods were rigidly followed by the master architect which could not have been achieved by excavating from the front.where each pillar will speak its divine valueThe construction is so pious and strong that several attempts by terrorist aurangazeb and his Islamic followers to break the the temple pillars and cause denigration to the divine structure only led to further decimation of Mughal invasion. And very minor damage was done to some of the elephants present in huge structureThe Kailasa temple is crown and part of the Ellora cave group. It is built at number 16th cave among total of 34 caves. The Ellora caves are not natural caves that is built by nature out of wear and tear of seasons and movement of earth, but spiritual dwellings excavated manually by Hindus out of the face of a cliff. Built between 5- 6 th century.4. Temples of Mahabalipuram – Chennai , TamilnaduMahabalipuram, situated about 60 km south of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, is an ancient port town known for its stone carvings and stone temples. It was built largely between the 7th and the 9th centuries. This port city of Pallavas is a one of a kind tourist destination worth a visit.According to the legends and history books, Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram was called ‘Kadalmalai’ meaning the land of sea and mountain. Later it got its popular name Mahabalipuram after the the kind-hearted asura king Mahabali. However, when the Pallavas started ruling the place, the name was changed again and kept after the name of one the first powerful kings from this dynasty namely Narasimhavarman-I who was also known as Mamallan1. The group of monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When seen from a distance it resembles the Dharamraja rath (Chariot). The shore temple is a collection of seven temples or seven pagodas as popularly known. Out of these seven temples five temples are still visible while two temples are submereged in the water. The tip of one such temple can be seen inside the water during a ferry ride which is available near to the beach area.2. There are five chariots dedicated to the Pandavas.3. There are bass reliefs (structures protruding from the base of the rock) of the Descent of the Ganges that are very famous.4. These temples were built by three generations of the Pallava Kings and it took 200 years to plan and create the site.5. Shore temple is the most prominent of them all.6. The Shore Temple is the last monument built and was built from the top to the bottom, unlike most others in general.7. Most of these monuments are monolithic, i.e. carved out of one single rock.Krishna’s Butter Ball:Weird But True: The mystery of the balancing rock of MahabalipuramThis is one of those unexplained mysteries in science. At Mahabalipuram the 20 feet high and 5 meter wide rock estimated to weigh over 250 tons seems to pull off a balancing act like no other. Known locally as Krishna’s Butter Ball is not a rock that stands on an extremely small and slippery area of a hill. It’s hard not to wonder how such a big structure is stationary at a place where it’s impossible to be so. And it’s been there for over 1200 years. Yes you heard that right 1200 years seemingly defying the laws of physics. Its original Tamil name is "Vaanirai Kal" which literally translates to "Stone of The Sky God"Fact: This rock is bigger and heavier than the monolithic stones of Ollantaytambo, Peru or Machu Picchu. The science:The rock is balanced upon a 4 feet area of the hill. Its simple physics that a structure needs a 250 ton rock has a far-fetched chance of resting on a 4 feet area for such a long period. To site imagery, imagine a ball on a slope, unless it has a heavy footing it rolls down pretty fast. The push attempt:In 1908 the then Governor of Madras Arthur Lawley decided the boulder to be too dangerous to nearby homes and wanted it removed. Seven elephants were employed to push the rock. But to everyone’s surprise the rock couldn’t be moved and the task was abandoned.INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE SHORE TEMPLE:The Shore Temple was classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.Each year in winter (December/January), Dance festival is organized by Department of Tourism, Govt. of Tamil Nadu. Classical Indian dances like Kathakali, Bharatanatyam, Kathak , Mohini Attam, Kuchipudi and Odissi are performed by the stalwarts in the month long festival. The rows of beautifully stone carved Nandi bulls line the boundary of the temple.A large statue of the mythical Varāha (Avatar of Vishnu in the form of boar) stands on the newly excavated new site on the south of the Shore Temple. The Shore temple looks like a chariot when seen from a distance.Thank you for reading hope you have enjoyed the journey. what i know is only limited. There are still more unknown wonders are there . people who has knowledge can share.I have added two more as there are more request from Quora readers to include. In South India, five temples were built for each of the five elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. These are the Pancha Bhuta Sthalas. Geographically, they are all within the Deccan Plateau – four in Tamil Nadu and one in Andhra Pradesh. The temple for water is in Thiruvanaikaval, fire is Thiruvannamalai, Kalahasti is air and Kanchipuram is earth. The temple for space is in Chidambaram. The Chidambaram temple is an incredible space. The newer part of the temple is around a thousand years old but no one knows how old the older part of the temple is. People say it is 3,500 years or moreCERN in Switzerland, which is the physics laboratory on the planet, where all the atom-smashing takes place, I saw that there is a Nataraja statue in front of the entrance, because they identified that there is nothing in human culture which is closer to what they are doing right now.CHIDAMBARAM:Symbolism behind the structure of a Shiva Temple1. These transfer energy to certain body parts that are invisible.6) Thirumoolar states that man represents the shape of Shivalingam, which represents Chidambaram which represents Sadashivam which represents HIS dance!7) "Ponnambalam" is placed slightly tilted towards the left. This represents our Heart. To reach this, we need to climb 5 steps called "Panchatshara padi""Si, Va, Ya, Na, Ma" are the 5 Panchatshara mantras. There are 4 pillars holding the Kanagasabha representing the 4 Vedas.8) Ponnambalam has 28 pillars denoting the 28 "Ahamas" as well as the 28 methods to worship Lord Shiva. Nataraja’s dance is said to indicate the five divine acts which area. Creation . Nataraja dances with a small drum called damarukam in one of hisright hands. Easwra is nada brahmam. He is the origin of all sounds (nadam). This isthe seed (vindu) from which the tree of the Universe emanated.b. Protection (Operation)- In another of the right hands, he shows the ‘AbhayaMudra’, meaning he is the kind protector .c. When the deeparadhana – showing lamps takes place to the swamy and to the left side , the screen is removed and we see five vertical long hangings of golden vilva leaves. We see nothing behind it. Sivakami shows the Saguna Brahman (the God with a form) that is Nataraja . The Saguna Brahman leads us to the Nirguna Brahman (the God without form or the God who has formlessness as his form). This is told as ‘Chidambara Rahasyam’ by the Dikshitars , who are the traditional pujaris in the temple.3. Shiva’s dance is called the cosmic dance by many scholars. In Chidambaram, this dance is called ‘Ananda Tandava’4. Lord Maha Vishnu also saw the Divine dance. In a nearby mantapa called Chitrakoota, Maha Vishnu, gives us dharshan in his fully reclining Yoga Nidra pose on the snake bed. If one stands on a small lotus sculpted on the floor slab in front of Narayana, one can at the same time see Nataraja in his right side.5. Sages Patanjali and Thirumoolar also saw Nataraja’s dance in Chidambaram. Their figures are embossed on the Silver doors of the Chit Sabha.LEPAKSHI TEMPLE:The guide whipped out a twig from his shirt pocket with a flourish and said dramatically: “Now I show you best part of Lepakshi temple.” He got down on his knees before the large grey pillar before us. Bending forward, he passed the twig slowly under the pillar. From one end to the other! There was an audible gasp from the group of tourists, mostly Europeans, as the twig emerged from the other side. He repeated the exercise with a page of an old grimy newspaper which he pulled out from another pocket. This was the famed Hanging Column or Pillar of Lepakshi temple, located in Anantapur district in southern Andhra Pradesh. “This is the pillar which does not rest on the ground fully,” the guide said, rising to stand beside us, and beaming triumphantly, almost as if he were the architect of this marvel. There are about 70 pillars at this fabulous 16th-century temple of stone in Vijayanagar style, but this one is the best known and a tribute to the engineering genius of ancient and medieval India’s temple builders. However, it is a bit dislodged from its original position — it is said that during the British era, a British engineer tried to move it in an unsuccessful attempt to uncover the secret of its support.Kindly give your feedback and comments. What was the most bizarre archaeological discovery of 2018?

Three skeletons recovered from a Alexandrine sarcophagus in what could have been a repurposing event (The Wackiest And Most Bizarre Archaeological Discoveries Of 2018).In early summer 2018, news agencies, Facebook, the internet, and Twitter were flooded with articles, posts, blogs and Tweets debating if a giant black sarcophagus recently discovered in Egypt should be opened or not.During an excavation in the Sidi Gaber district of Alexandria, archaeologists uncovered a large, black granite sarcophagus.[1] At 2.65 meters (8.7 feet) and weighing almost 30 tons, it is the longest that has been found in the area.[2] Surprisingly, a layer of mortar between the lid and the body of the sarcophagus remained intact, meaning that whatever or whoever was in there has been there since the Ptolemaic period (323 BCE to 30 BCE).[3]Archaeologists estimate it dates back to the Ptolemaic period (323-30 BCE), an era of Egyptian history that followed the death of Alexander the Great and ended after the Roman invasion and death of Cleopatra VII.[4]Because of its large and unconventional size, experts believe the sarcophagus could date to an earlier pharaonic dynasty and could have even been brought to the city from an earlier site down the Nile River and used to rebury someone later on.[5]That Gigantic Black Sarcophagus Might Be OpenedThe granite sarcophagus was the largest ever found in the Sidi Gaber district of Alexandria, leading archaeologists, Egyptologists and the world asking the same question: “What could possibly be inside and or who is the colossal figure buried inside this massive sarcophagus?”[6] An alabaster bust of a man was found nearby and was initially presumed to belong to the owner of the tomb.[7]Alabaster head of a man (What's Inside This Massive Egyptian Sarcophagus?)Getting the sarcophagus out of its resting place intact and undamaged, proved to be a major feat of engineering. The Ministry of Antiquities commissioned a committee of engineers, construction experts, archaeologists and Egyptologists to supervise the newly-discovered sarcophagus.[8] The plan involved lifting the 30-ton coffin in a two-part process. First the area around the sarcophagus was filled and then the coffin was raised by a tow truck “in a scientific way that does not harm the antiquity.”[9]A reddish-brown sludge was found in the sarcophagus. Museum of AntiquitiesAfter days of debates, commentaries and declarations of paranoia on the internet,[10] when archaeologists opened the stone coffin it didn’t contain a horrifying mummy set on conquering the world, but a sludgy, slimy mixture containing the remains of several individuals. Archaeologists evacuated the area for several hours due to the noxious fumes.[11] According to officials, sewage from an adjacent road and sewer system had leaked into the coffin, leaving three skeletons to rest in the red sludge. [12]Evacuation of tomb due to noxious odors. Museum of AntiquitiesBefore its opening, many speculated on the occupant of the sarcophagus. Initially, the Department of Antiquities believed that the mysterious 30-ton sarcophagus belonged to a priest, not to a king or an emperor, as the sarcophagus lacks inscriptions.[13] None of the three mummies belongs to a Ptolemaic or Roman royal family, as had previously been suggested. No silver or gold metallic masks, small statues, or amulets were found inside the stone coffin, further backing up the claim that these remains aren’t those of royals.[14] Others hoped it contained the missing remains of Alexander the Great.[15]The opening of the sarcophagus created a series of new mysteries for Egyptologists to tackle: Who were these three people? When exactly did they live? What killed them? Why were they buried in such a giant sarcophagus? What were they buried with (if anything)? And how did so much liquid sewage get into the sarcophagus?[16]Skulls of the three decomposed mummies (Huge Egyptian sarcophagus found to contain three mummies)Initially, preliminary examinations indicated that resting in the sloppy red sludge were three male skeletons, most likely officials or high ranking soldiers”.[17] One appeared to have suffered from an arrow wound to the head, having been the recipient of a surgical procedure known as trepanation (making holes in the skull.[18]In late July 2018, the sarcophagus was transferred to Alexandria National Museum for restoration and further study, including an investigation into the cause or causes of death for the inhabitants.Experts are studying the three skeletons found in the mysterious black granite sarcophagus ('Cursed' ancient Egyptian sarcophagus reveals its grisly secrets).By late August 2018, information began circulating on the internet concerning the identities of the skeletons. Despite initial reports, the sarcophagus contained a young woman and two young men who appeared to have been placed on top of each other in subsequent burials in the sarcophagus.[19] The fact that a woman is included in the burial overturns an earlier hypothesis that the tomb’s inhabitants were soldiers. The age for the woman was between 20 and 25; for one of the men, between 35 and 39; and the other man, between 40 and 44. That last skeleton has a hole in its skull, which healed long before the man died. This means that the cavity might be a result of a trepanation. This surgery is the oldest surgical intervention ever known since pre-history[20], but was rare in Egypt.[21]Initially, it was unclear what artifacts, if any, were buried with the skeletons. Any objects placed in the sarcophagus could have been destroyed by the sewage.Scientists Begin Unveiling the Secrets of the Mummies in the Alexandria 'Dark Sarcophagus'To their surprise and delight, scientists found a small gold artifact and three thin sheets of gold, each square embossed with an image.[22]One of the images depicts a seed pod of an opium poppy inside a shrine, which may have associations with death, sleep and rebirth.[23]Another shows an unhooded snake with its mouth open, which could be a symbol of the goddess Isis and represent rebirth.[24] “As a rule of thumb, it would seem that snake jewelry was primarily a female thing,” Jack Ogden, the president of the Society of Jewellery Historians states. “But I am not sure whether one could suggest that the presence of a snake here suggests it was connected with the female occupant of the sarcophagus.”[25]The third gold panel shows either a palm branch or a stalk of grain, both of which are related to fertility and rebirth.[26] Egyptian authorities continue to believe that the artwork indicates military rank, and could prove that the individuals were Egyptian soldiers.[27] Scholars, none of whom have seen the artifacts in person, are considering alternative interpretations.Additionally, a small gold artifact, whose purpose is unclear, was found in the sarcophagus.[28] Researchers with the ministry did not say in the statement if there are any drawings or inscriptions on it.Studies are ongoing on the bones, including DNA analysis and CT scans, to find out more about them and to determine whether they were members of a single family.[29]As the world awaits the comprehensive publication of the results of the contents of the sarcophagus, the story has taken another bizarre turn. Thousands, disappointed by the lack of an apocryphal plague or a resurrected Egyptian deity wreaking havoc upon the world, have found a new project to channel their energies and disappointments.[30]Innes McKendrick, a British video games producer, was so disappointed by the lack of a curse that he started a petition on the website change.org to drink the sewage water as a way to actuate the scourge that was promised upon mankind.[31] Currently, the petition is only a few hundred signatures short of reaching its goal of 35,000 signatures.“I stand true to the hope we were promised, and deeply believe that by consuming the skeleton juice in the form of a carbonated high caffeine energy drink that we can still have the opportunity to enter an era of unending darkness and despair. I’m so glad to see others backing the petition, and sharing in my mission to rapidly bring about the end of all things,” McKendrick explained.[32]Footnotes[1] Mystery black sarcophagus opened in Egypt[2] http://Dating techniques will also be used to find where they fit in Alexandria’s rich and diverse history. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.news.com.au/technology/science/archaeology/mystery-black-sarcophagus-in-egypt-cracked-open-despite-warnings-about-curse/news-story/efa79e69d52bbb970c18364d39961b51[3] That Massive Black Sarcophagus Was Opened.
