PDF Editor FAQ

There were descriptions about Kingdoms of India or the Greater Indian region in the historical Chinese record since the Western Han Dynasty (BCE202 or 206). Is there any relevant text description about China in the history record of India?

Unlike other ancient civilizations, the tradition of Historical recording was missing in Ancient India (many of my fellow Indians get defensive about this and argue that India had a different way of approaching history via mythology, but I am not convinced), especially if it was related to far off regions like China, the Roman Empire, Greece, Egypt. The elite minority (Brahmins) held monopoly over pursuing intellectual quests and the rest of population was discouraged or simply not allowed to go that way.The link between Ancient India and Ancient China was Yuezhi tribes and Buddhism that reached via the Silk Roads (North India - Northwest India - Afghanistan - around Taklamakan Desert). The Yuezhi were nomadic pastoralists from China who moved westwards in 2nd century BCE after losing to the Xiongnu people. One of their tribes, Kushanas, entered India and established the Kushan Empire that covered much of North India and Central Asia to Westernmost China.Considering Kushans as Indians (or Chindians), they surely knew about China. But there are no known historical records talking about China.Kumārajīva was a 4th century Buddhist monk, scholar, and translator from Kucha (along northern edge of Taklamakan). His father Kumārāyana was a monk from Kashmir in India. Among the most important texts translated by Kumārajīva are the Diamond Sutra, Amitabha Sutra, Lotus Sutra. But there are no writings of his about China that came to India. His statue in Xinjiang, China -Faxian was the famous traveler who visited India and Sri Lanka from 399–412 and wrote his important travelogue, A Record of Buddhist Kingdoms. And then the famous Xuanzang visited India in 627 AD and spent 17 years in India and wrote his famous travelogue, Great Tang Records on the Western Regions, that further inspired the Chinese classic, Journey to the West. These travelogues helped people in China learn about India, not the other way round. Xuanzang got royal patronage from King Harshavardhana who ruled over a vast empire. Bāṇabhaṭṭa was a prose writer and poet in the court of Harshavardhana who wrote a biography of Harshavardhana called Harshacharita (deeds of Harsha), but the idea of learning about China from Xuanzang did not strike him or anyone else :-(After the Muslim conquests of Central Asia in 700s, China and India got disconnected. Though there’s another way of traveling from China to India from Yunnan province in the south to Myanmar and then India, the jungles are thick and terrain not easy to cover. There’s been limited movement on this route in ancient times, or even if there was, no writing in India exists.Till date, there’s very limited knowledge of China that exists in India, and people would struggle to name a city other than Shanghai or Beijing. If you wish to explore this topic further, I highly recommend this book - India, China, and the World: A Connected History - by Tansen Sen, Wang Gungwu

Is North India better than South India in at least one aspect?

Yes every place in India has its role and contribution towards the country to make it unity in diversity.I agree that South India is really very advance when we talk about it’s literacy rate, sex ratio, job opportunities provided there and much more. But North India has also it’s place and its proving itself. Let start with a brief description about North IndiaUttar Pradesh is the state with highest numbers of IAS officer.Bihar is the state with second highest number of IAS and highest number of IPS officer.Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Uttrakhand give a large number of Officers to Indian army. Most of the Indian army soldiers hail from Uttrakhand and Uttar Pradesh.Uttar Pradesh is known to be largest poducer of Wheat, sugarcane and mango. It has India’s capital New Delhi. We can feel here extreme of each and every weather conditions so, North Indians have developed a habit of tolerance in every sense.Whole north India do not know only Hindi they also have their own language like Dogri, Himanchali, Garwali,Kumaoni, Bhojpuri and many more but they love to communicate in Hindi language. One of the greenest cities in the world is in North India and yet it is called as concrete jungle. It is New Delhi.North Indians are liberal than most of the other states in India. They are equally traditional too.Varanasi is the oldest, continuously inhabited city in the world.Magnetic hill, a gravity hill is in Leh.Highest cricket pitch in the world is in Chail, Himachal Pradesh.First Agricultural University of India is in Pantnagar, Uttrakhand.Land of the yoga capital in the world is Rishikesh, Uttrakhand. The biggest dam of India is in Tehri, Uttrakhand.Uttrakhand has the oldest national park in India i.e Jim Corbett National Park.Major Som Nath Sharma was the first recipients of Param Veer Chakra, belong to 4 Kumaon Regiment. Major Somnath was born in Dadh, Kangra, Punjab Province. (On suggestion of # VaibhavKashyap & Gaurav Thakur)Uttrakhand is the only state where forest cover is increasing. The state of Uttarakhand is also home for the pilgrimage sites of Chota Char Dham which are Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.Uttarakhand is the only state in India which has Sanskrit as its Official Language. The famous Boarding School of India – “Doon School” boasts of its numerous alumni in different walks of life. Few popular persons who completed their education journey from this boarding school are Rajeev Gandhi, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Karan Thapar, Naveen Patnaik, Vikram Seth, Himani Shivpuri, Abhinav Bindra etc.Punjab is known as Golden Harvests as its land is very fertile. Also called as bread basket of India.Punjabi's are known for their hospitality and their lion heart courage throughout the nation.India is unbeaten in kabaddi, Thanks to our Haryana region.(edit: After Neeraj Abusariya's suggestion)India’s most lively and colourful dance belong to Punjab. We all know.likely to add some more points later. But I think we are not here to be in rat race that which part of India is better and which is worst. We all have to be together to make our country proud and one and give an example to other nations that yes we can be together with many religions and with a long list of language and culture. It is a largely considered misconception that the north Indians and south Indians do not get along. As a matter of fact, they are very much united.# Thanks to one n all who upvoted my answer.# And Thanks for the suggestion.# This is the link for Delhi’s position among green cities of India.https://atomberg.com/top-10-green-cities-in-india/

Is it possible, and safe enough, to drive from California to South America?

Is it possible, and safe enough, to drive from California to South America? No.It becomes increasingly UNsafe as you head South past Mexico. But worse, the only road ENDS at the “Darien Gap”.The Darién Gap crosses 10,000 square miles of untamed jungle shared by Panama and Colombia. It’s wet to the point of swampy in areas. Where it’s not too wet to drive, guerrilla groups operate in the jungle. Both countries try to block tourists from entering, since the dangers are too great. There is no road, and it’s doubtful that even a four-wheel drive could get through the jungle-swamp. Well prepared hikers have trouble. In 1971, by agreement of all North and South American countries, the USA took on the challenge of completing a road through the Darien Gap.In 1974, the USA gave up. Disease, dangerous animals, deadly insects, gunfire…To this day, the Darien Gap is so impassable that *viruses* prevalent in South America have not crossed to North America or vice-versa.A team of adventurers in a Land Rover succeeded in 1960. Their purpose was to promote the idea of completing the Pan-American Highway. 1960: Trans Darien ExpeditionAnother group did it again 1971. In both cases, it took them 5 months JUST to cross the Darien Gap. And there seem to be other similarities to their travel - namely that they did a lot of pushing and pulling to get the vehicle through. 1971/72: Range Rover Darien Gap - Range Rover ClassicMost who try don’t make it.The last pic is the result of a promotion by GM/Chevrolet claiming they had crossed the Darien Gap in a Corvair. Not hardly. They produced an 18 minute film of their trip, but they were heavily supported with enough spare parts to completely rebuild the vehicles. They also came with two 4WD one-ton trucks equipped with winches to pull the cars through the jungle. They *rarely* moved under their own power, and only two made it out. The picture is of the one they gave up on. Into the Gap: Three Cars Enter, Two Cars Leave - The Truth About CarsAnd, yes, you can take a ferry. But that wasn’t the question was it? You can also fly.UPDATE:This post has gotten a lot of readers, and some have made comments to the effect that everything I posted was “out of date”. They reference a ferry travelers can take to bypass the “bad part” or suggest there is now a well-traveled road. So let’s talk reality..Yes, for a short time there WAS a ferry that made the trip between Panama and Colombia. It was a long trip that few took and it required heading out into the Atlantic. The “Ferry Express” started service in 2014 and cost about $2100 for a car and two passengers. The trip itself took little more than half a day, but the paperwork and boarding took another two. It shut down in 2015.As for the extension of the “highway”, they need to put down the crack pipe. Here is the 2021 description by a journalist reporting on the desperate attempts by migrants trying to cross and then reach the USA:“Darien Gap is a 66 miles-long swath of jungle connecting Colombia and Panama and thus South and North America. It is an untamed wilderness where nature and occasional outlaws rule. Crocodiles lurk in rivers, fer-de-lance vipers slither across undergrowth and gun-wielding opportunists await an opportunity to strip passersby off their valuables.”In April 2021, a fellow named “Dan” is making his 5th trip to Columbia and 2nd attempt to cross the gap…. on foot, mind you. His counsel to would-be gap travelers is this:“You can’t complete the crossing if you are killed, so understanding when to retreat, re-plan, and try again is key – and the same can be said for every expedition: from scrambling ridges, to high-altitude mountains, to paddling the Yukon River. The only failure is not coming home.”
