A cop getting someone's driving history is one thing. Getting their criminal history (CCH) is quite another.To obtain a CCH, the communicator has to be logged in under his or her name. The requestor's (the officer) name is also entered. There is a log kept of the request that is subject to review from the state agency that manages access to the state and national criminal information computer system. And all records that are obtained are immediately shredded if they are not needed in the furtherance of an investigation.This is not to say that certain criminal and jail records aren't public record, because they are. Checking the courthouses in these locations will provide a reasonably complete picture of the subject's criminal activities, in most cases.Close examination of a credit report or driving history (available to anyone on request in some states, available only to the driver in others) may reveal locations the subject has omitted from his list of residences and work locations. If a record lists locations that don't appear in the subject's list, check those places, too.There are services that employ contractors around the United States who visit courthouses near their homes and do research for the companies that employ them. Unless you have your own network or unlimited time and travel funds, it's usually more cost-effective to use a service like this. A charge of $15-$30 per subject per county is typical.There is a national repository of criminal history information, but it's available only to criminal justice agencies. The FBI maintains the Interstate Identification Index (III, usually said as "triple eye") on an automated system as part of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) in Clarksburg, WV. Criminal justice agencies can query this system for any legitimate investigative purpose to obtain what is commonly called a "rap sheet," and the response is usually instantaneous. The FBI zealously protects access to this system. Every year or two, there is a case where law enforcement officers, dispatchers or clerks are prosecuted for selling or otherwise furnishing information obtained from this system to private parties. All inquiries are logged, and it's fairly easy to backtrack illicit inquiries once they know where to look.

You are only exposed to sensitive critical information if you have a TS/SCI requirement. A Secret clearance doesn’t cut it for that.As for the investigations for a secret clearance. you’ll only be subjected to a National Agency Check, which is a computerized search of investigative files and other records held by federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Office of Personnel Management and a Local Agency Check. Which is a review of appropriate criminal history records held by local law enforcement agencies, such as police departments or sheriffs, with jurisdiction over the areas where you have resided, gone to school, or worked. Or course you will also be subject to a review of your Credit Record.What ever you do, never LIE on your form. You will be caught and it could cause problems for you, especially if you are a member of the Armed Forces.
