For a lot of people who keep just one gun around, it may be “up in the closet.” They may not have even checked on it for months or even a year, perhaps longer, until that police officer inquired about the gun.This raises questions about what “new laws” the gun control advocates will demand to support the registry. Mandatory theft reporting sounds good until you realize you can be prosecuted if you don’t meet their deadline (and you will be in some states). Would it be illegal then, to be found carrying a gun owned by your brother or father? What might that mean for a family who shared several different guns on their carry permits?The Question of AbuseAny government system can be misused or abused. We’ve seen that repeatedly in the political arena with accusations of misusing the IRS in different administrations. How might it be abused? Let’s count the ways.Certainly could be used to identify guns owned for later confiscation.Taxation is a powerful tool and laws can always be changed by Congress. Instead of the law requiring you to register only when ownership changes, they could make it an annual registration requirement. If they use the Chicago method, once your gun isn’t registered on time, you lose it forever. Of course you’d have to pay a tax masquerading as a fee for the privilege.Create a slew of new laws that rely on the registry to show it has been properly registered to an individual. If there is a difference your gun is seized and possibly you go to jail - even if the government is in error - because they will always assume the database is “perfect.”Used against political opponents by knowing exactly what guns he owns and using that against his public stance or to allege some impropriety to be investigated.Unscrupulous bureaucrats could conspire to remove or delete the record of certain guns of a political opponent, critic or pundit so a later audit would find them “violating the law” with an “unregistered” gun.Identify owners of large collections of guns and target them for political action based on their political affiliation. This could range from IRS audits of both personal and business taxes to Customs raids (if they import/export for business) and more.Identify political opponents (large and small) who have several to lots of guns and target them for harassing “audits” of their collection.Keep in mind “political actions” don’t necessarily need to be a the federal level. They could easily be at your state, city or county level. Police, judges, prosecutors, child-services, (possibly) public defenders, and others will have access to the registry. That can also mean city councilmen (and their staff) could get access. If you’re a vocal critic of your mayor or a city council member they could trump up a complaint of stalking or threatening to have you arrested and perhaps your gun(s) confiscated “for safety”.Canada’s Expensive Lesson in RegistrationCanada’s great experiment with registration was supposed to cost them less than C$5 million and be completed in 3 years. Almost a decade later, that cost had ballooned to nearly C$1 billion and the system was woefully incomplete, inaccurate and had not helped solve a single crime (as it was touted to do). Moreover, at least 5 Canadians were arrested, imprisoned and had their lives ruined for various “crimes” of protesting the effort. One Canadian showed how inane the program was by registering a soldering gun. Yet another registered a Black & Decker heat gun — to his dog! Canada’s system would have been 20 time smaller than one for the US, as they were trying to register an estimated 15 million guns owned by Canada’s 34 million residents. It’s therefore reasonable to expect a U.S. system could cost us up to $20 billion just to register guns, plus hundreds of millions annually going forward to maintain it.Historically Low Compliance With RegistrationLet’s also add that in most countries - Germany, UK, Canada, etc. - the low rate of compliance seems to be reasonably consistent as between only 18%-20% of guns are registered. The reasons for this are simple. Lots of people understand history and history says when governments go bad they remove civilian guns just before things get worse. Some will not register any of their guns for fear the government will target them or treat them differently. Others will fail to register some of their guns, banking on the idea they may be able to hide them from authorities if they’re banned.A Question of AccuracyA U.S. registration system would be massively complex and also massively busy. It would have 300 million gun entries and even more entries for “people”. People buy, sell and trade guns all the time. I know how to network, how to build trust and how to use trust that I have gained. I know where things are, what things are worth, and a thousand little game mechanics that I’ve learned by dying, over and over again, to people better at the game than I am.EVE PVP is the most skill-based combat I have ever encountered in a game, made more difficult by the fact that your heart is beating so fast you feel sick, your balls are trying to crawl back up inside you and your entire sovereign space is at stake if you fail to outplay your enemy.Of course, EVE is also perfectly willing to let you play the game like a treadmill. They actually installed a few treadmills because a large amount of the player-base apparently wanted them. The game will not teach you how to play the game. It expects you to go out and do that yourself. The sole teaching tool that EVE has is that the game will simply destroy you, over and over again, until you learn. If you don’t learn, it will never. Ever. Stop.And nowhere, even the places covered in rules and green dots and big assurances of safety, is safe. It’s perfectly acceptable for someone to kill you in high security space. They can do it by declaring war on your corporation (for a pittance) or by suicide-ganking you. Concord will eventually arrive and kill them, but the death of their 50 million isk of destroyers is small comfort compared to the loss of your 1.5 billion isk faction-fitted battleship. If you petition this, the GM will reply “welcome to EVE!”But in the end, the friendships you make in EVE will be lifelong and meaningful. The quality of the people you meet in the game (once you get four jumps away from the alts spamming scams in Jita) is simply above and beyond what you’ll find anywhere else, in any game… and I’d know, I’ve played basically all of them.There are long periods of boredom. Sometimes, the most effective thing you can do is wait for a situation to change. Things can get pretty bad in EVE, if you screw up badly enough or your intel is bad. You will, inevitably, end up leaving assets behind, sometimes expensive ones, in all kinds of corners of the EVE universe, simply because extracting those assets would be nearly if not actually impossible in the political/military climate you’re evacuating from.I like to liken EVE to extreme downhill skiing: a week of boredom, waiting for the weather to be (theoretically) perfect, followed by an hour of heart-pumping adrenaline.I guess the TL;DR of the thing is this:I play EVE because EVE is not a waste of my time. The stories it generates are meaningful and unique - capable of raising the eyes of even non-gamers. The people you meet will sometimes be lifelong friends (or enemies), and you meet all kinds of interesting folk, because interesting folk play EVE.EVE makes me laugh, makes me cry, makes me care in a way no other game ever has. Even when I don’t have time to play, I track the progress of the game’s politics with an eager eye, following the careers of my closest in-game friends and worst in-game enemies with all the attention I pay to the 2016 Presidential bid or North Korea’s latest shenanigans.
