PDF Editor FAQ

I’m in Calculus 3 and struggling with Algebra, what do I do?

Learn algebra. This isn’t meant to be a patronizingly vacuous answer. But I did intentionally phrase it provocatively. The point is that the solution is pretty obvious. Not necessarily easy, but obvious.Get an algebra book. If you already know areas of weakness you’d like to work on, jump to those sections and start doing problem after problem. Study the worked examples. If you don’t have enough examples, get another book.If you don’t know areas of weakness you’d like to work on, skip to the end of each chapter. There’s usually a cumulative review. Do those problems, and note the ones you’re weak at. Then repeat above.Acquiring basic algebra skills only happens one way: doing problems. Sure, there are a universe of books and videos and who-knows-what-else available. But there’s no way around doing problems. Kind of like how there’s no way around lifting weights if you want to be a body builder.Story time. The point is to motivate you, but if you’re already motivated you can skip this.I once taught a calculus class with an unusual format. The students were “pre-Freshmen,” meaning this was the summer before their freshman year. They were all aspiring engineering and science majors. The calculus class was part of a larger program (that included writing classes, study tips, and who-knows-what-else.) It was all very structured, but the calculus format was three hour lectures every day.(As an aside, you can’t just lecture for three hours. I lectured for about 1:20, took a 20 minute break, and did about 1:20 of interactive problem solving.)That’s not the point. The point is, I had one student who was struggling. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong when I was grading his homework, but it was clear he wasn’t really getting what was going on. Being the concerned type, at some point (relatively early in the program) I just asked him what was up.He didn’t exactly volunteer it, but I discovered he basically didn’t know algebra. Any of it.It was absolutely pointless for him to be in a calculus class. But I also didn’t want to jam him up academically, especially in his “zeroth” semester. So I challenged him to learn algebra. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to teach him, but I went with him to the library, picked out a textbook with him, and just told him the advice I told you: go through the book, do a bunch of problems, and grind away.Unfortunately I don’t know what happened to him. But I can definitely tell you he learned a lot more over that summer than if he just sat on his hands all semester long.

What should I do to keep study habits during the holidays?

Isolate a key activity. Depending on your specific case, that may be solving math problems, reading textbook chapters, memorizing lists or reviewing concepts.Commit to meeting a certain quota of work everyday during the holidays. E.g. read 1 textbook chapter a day, solve 5 math problems a day, review 20 flashcards a day.Meet the Quota before doing anything else. Just have breakfast and take care of the quota. That way, you'll get the rest of the day to do what you want, but with significant work done already. It's easy, cumulative and can still have fun without feeling guilty. For more about Productivity, check my book The Super Student's Guide to Productivity.
